February 25, 201016 yr Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez isn't interested in a hometown discount, based on this report from Dan Hayes of the North County Times. In reference to his current contract, Gonzalez said, "At the time you take the security...the next one is where I look for what I deserve." I imagine he's expecting to top $100MM once he reaches free agency after the 2011 season. Gonzalez says there have been no extension talks with the Padres. Gonzalez is sure to continue appearing in trade rumors this summer, but he cautions that "99.9 percent of everything is false." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/no-discount-for-adrian-gonzalez.html All I have to say about that is :o.
February 25, 201016 yr One team is going to get a one hell of a boost at the trading deadline... thats for sure.
February 25, 201016 yr What's wrong with Gonzalez wanting to get paid. Teixeira got $180 last offseason. Mark has a career .928 OPS and is awesome. But he's always played in one of the best ballparks in the league being Texas or New Yankee Stadium with the short porch. Adrian Gonzalez has a career .935 away OPS, is 2 years younger than Teixeria, and had a crazy .958 OPS in San Diego last year. If he keeps that up, he's going to get over $150. Not $100.
February 25, 201016 yr The Red Sox will find a way to get him. They'll probably get rid of Big Papi and rotate Beltran-Youkilis-and Gonzalez in the DH slot.
February 25, 201016 yr The Red Sox will find a way to get him. They'll probably get rid of Big Papi and rotate Beltran-Youkilis-and Gonzalez in the DH slot. Beltran? Guessing that's a Beltre typo. Anyways This is the last year of Ortiz contract. That frees up $12.5 million. Mike Lowell is gone too. That's another $12 million. Hermida will probably not be resigned. He will be traded if good, or cut. That's $3.3 million. Varitek will be gone for sure this time. That's $3 million. Bill Hall will be gone. He's making around $1.2 with the Red sox (Mariners eating a lot). That's freeing up a solid $33 million Contract values that rise/decrease Lackey - $2.75 Youkilis + $2.75 Dice + $2 Lester + $2 Pedroia + $2 Wakefield - $2 This is a net $4 million, so now you have $29 million to spend. But we're not done, free agency and arbitration Josh Beckett, + $12 Adrian Beltre +$9 Papelbon + $9 Victor Martinez + $7 Hermida +$3.5 Okajima +$2.75 Delcarmen + $1 So now the $29 you had to spend, increases dramatically to roughly $73-74 million Beckett is a free agent, and will easily trump what Lackey got this year and be around a 5/$100 player V-Mart is a free agent, and has never cashed in (has made about $25 million in baseball). I suspect he will get at least a 4/$60 contract Papelbon will be in 3rd year arbitration, and due probably close to $12 million Delcarmen, Okajima 2nd year arbitration and each be $2-3 million relievers Ellsbury year 1 arbitration and will be close to a $3 million player Adrian Beltre has a $5 million player option. Beckett has to stay, boom $18 million. They will keep Victor as they don't have another catcher, boom $15 million. Beltre probably picks up that option, boom $5 million Ellsbury has gotta stay, boom $3 million Let's say you keep Okajima and Ramirez (or replace with normal vets) for around $6 million. So you now have $25 million to spend. You can trade the farm for Gonzalez, who makes $5.5 million in 2011 before megadeal happens, meaning you can afford him, resign Papelbon for $12 million, and still have $8 million to spend on basically three bench spots. Which looks GREAT for the Red Sox on paper. Then when you need to pay Gonzalez post 2011, Drew's $14.4 million is off the books after 2011, so combine that with Gonzalez 2011 salary, and you got your $20 million right there to pay Adrian annually. And because you're the Red Sox and smart as sh*t, you have Cameron, Beltre, Papelbon, Scutaro, and Wakefield also coming off the books and saving you an additional $27 million, plus presumably your bench guys on 1 year deals, you again have $30-33 million to play with in the 2011 offseason after just giving Adrian $20 million. That is insane. Yea they spend a lot of money, but big ups to the longterm financial planning. This is god damn payroll perfection. They have figured it out to a science how to alternate long term deals so big ones come off every year or two so they aren't hammered with these albatross contracts.
February 25, 201016 yr Also, nice work on magnifying the Red Sox payroll situation Lou. Theo and Company have done an exceptional job with contracts, something that makes them contenders every year and will likely remain that way for a pretty good amount of time. In your opinion do you think the Yankees are making a mistake when they sign guys like A-Rod, Tex, and CC to long term megadeals? Many people think these huge contracts are going to eventually bite them in the ass.

Many people think these huge contracts are going to eventually bite them in the ass. No because the Steinbrenners have serious "bailout" money and will pump more in to fix the problems. Also, you kind of have to give those bastards credit. A lot of money came off the books with Matsui, Damon, and they made some really smart 1 year commitments to Nick Johnson, Chan Ho Park, Winn, pretty much Mitre and Gaudin, and grabbed an incredibly beneficial Granderson contract for a bunch of lame prospects. They also have an insane amount of money coming off the books, $57 million, with 4 players - Jeter, Mariano, Pettite, and Vazquez. Combined, that's nearly $70 million to spend after 2010. And realistically, they keep Jeter on a modest contract, and maybe give Rivera a 1 year deal if he doesn't retire and give his job to Joba. Anyway this goes down, they have at least $40-45 million to spend in free agency next offseason, which means one of Cliff Lee, Brandon Webb, Tim Hudson, or Erik Bedard will be a Yankee, and considering their lineup is set with their entire field coming back (sans Randy Winn and Nick Johnson), they'd have the other $25-30 million to buy a slugging DH (Berkman, D. Lee, C. Pena all come to mind) on a shorter 2-3 contract, and have money to grab another vagabond FA outfielder, a reliever, and whatever else. Then in 2011, they free themselves of $24 million with Posada, Swisher, and Marte, and then they still have everybody, just call up Montero to take over for Posada, and spend that $24 million on a starting OF, bench players, relievers, etc. That's very reasonable. And that's not with upping salary because the A-Rod contract de-escalates, and CC/Teix/AJ remain the same. Oh and I forgot Kel Igawa eventually comes off the books. What a joke with that one. So they have closer to $30 million to spend here. Basically, they have got a lot smarter the last 2 years despite the enormous deals, because they are not trading away their best young talent for the most part (Hughes, Joba, Montero), when they do (Jackson, Kennedy) they are getting quality signed players (Granderson), and instead of giving guys like Nick Johnson 3 year deals to blow up in their face, they hold firm and get him on a 1 year contract. You know what screws them? If A-Rod really regresses with age in 3 years, Jeter starts slowing down, and they get some SP injuries. Everyone else is young, relatively healthy, and projectionable, but those two guys can kill them with dead payroll if they turn into normal players and not the beasts they are. Likewise with the pitching that's obvious. CC and AJ aren't going to turn into Zito, but if they blow out an arm, or Joba does (which has got to happen), or Hughes or Robertson don't develop, they might have scary 4th and 5th SP issues and an unreliable pen. So yea, if they produce, they actually did a good job with payroll if 2010 is their "ceiling" from now on in this new economy. But if someone gets injured, they are screwed. But can't you really say that about everyone?
March 18, 201016 yr I hope the Mets make a run at him -- he's a great player. AND GET INJURED OR WASHED UP LATER? NOOOO THANKS! POOR: ---------- MO VAUGHN ROBERTO ALOMAR CARLOS BELTRAN JOHAN SANTANA PEDRO MARTINEZ NEXT... JASON BAY METS ARE TOTAL BAD LUCK! :banghead

Alomar was entering his mid-30's, he was bound to breakdown but coming off an MVP season it was a surprise. Pedro again, old, had a few decent years with the Mets before his arm gave out. That's what was expected. Beltran has been great his time here. He struggled his first season, but since has been exactly what was expected. He's injured now, but he's 32 and that's what happens. Johan has been balls to the wall. He made 34 starts in his first season and only got shutdown last year because there was no reason to keep running him out there. He could have pitched through his injuries.
March 19, 201016 yr I know its the game, and pro sports in particular, but i know i would be way more than happy to have his "security" money.
