Dodgers a possibility for Lee

ODD MAN OUT? Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee earned $4.25 million in 2003 and is expected to receive a considerable raise through arbitration this winter.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are offering left-hander Odalis Perez in exchange for a first baseman -- and though Milwaukee's Richie Sexson is their primary target, the team also is interested in the Marlins' Derrek Lee, sources say.

Lee's name has surfaced in trade talks involving a number of teams, including the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles appear to be the most serious suitor, reportedly having offered a package of major-league infielders and minor-league pitchers. The Giants and Diamondbacks, like the Dodgers, prefer Sexson and consider the acquisition of Lee a fallback plan, sources say.

Sexson, who turns 29 next month, is due $8.6 million next season in the final year of his contract. He hit .272 with 45 homers and 124 RBI in 2003.

Lee, 28, made $4.25 million last season but could fetch as much as $7 million this winter through salary arbitration. That figures to price him out of the Marlins' payroll plans. Lee hit .271 with 31 home runs and 92 RBI this season while winning a Gold Glove.

Former All-Star Perez, 26, was 12-12 with a 4.52 ERA this past season.

For the most part, all I am seeing for these O's and Dodger offers is pitching and more pitching...That's fine, I believe the team needs some reliever and starting pitching depth in the Marlins system, but the team needs to start getting some young outstanding hitting prospects too...Hitters who are talented, young, and cheap...THe Marlins rotation is good but they wont win games 1-0 (one to nothing) every night...Need to put a good offense into the line-up every night...If Enc, Lee, and Pudge should go, it's gonna be the Lowell and Cabrera show every night..Conine is still a good hitter but he is getting a little long in the tooth, and Lowell and Cabrera wont win games offensively every night..Again, this is if we lose a significant number of players to trades and FA..(or even prison..Castro)...It wouldn't hurt to have some potential someday Heltons,Guerreros,pre-injury Griffeys, or Kearns learning their trade in the Marlins farm system...

a 7th starter would be good-in case of a bad outing-they could go in the bullpen and pitch alot of innings.

dont worry about WC.....

I don't worry about him. His arrogant and self-conceited way of responding to my posting don't have any effect on me. Obviously he knows everything... :whistle

I think trading for pitching is very smart. For one, when Beckett, Burnett and Penny start becoming the best pitchers in the game - the paychecks will demand it too. You cant keep em all, so you have to have some replacements to step in there. Also, pitching is the most sought after commodity in trades and you can get pretty much anything you want with pitching talent. So we dont need to have hitters in our farm system as much as you think. For that, turn to free agency or trade (trade your deep, young, talented pitching for hitting). It makes a lot of sense, besides, pitching is a lot harder to have pan out than hitting in my opinion. Which is one reason why there is not a lot of great pitchers out there now.

Cabrera is now up in the bigs...Ad-Gonz was traded to the Rangers, Stokes is either a year away or 2 away from becoming a major leaguer or a bust...What is there left for power hitting talent? I can think of Willingham but thats about it..Has Hermida joined the next "can't miss" list yet? We're not exactly steep at power hitting prospects at the hot corners...Do we have a Guerrero-type player coming in the farm system? I think not...

Stockpiling pitchers is a great idea but there comes a time for balance...You need some young power hitters too...

Your comment about free agency to acquire this? Too expensive

Your comment about getting them through trade? Hello, that was my whole point and you contradict yourelf by saying it...

Obviously the MArlins dont believe in having hitters in the farm system...Outside of Cabs, has the farm system ever produced a power hitter? A possible 40 home run hitter? NO

Cabs is one reason why people started coming back to the ballpark this year (along with Dontrelle and the whole WIld Card thing)...A good young hitter with a huge future is exciting to watch..You need one of those, you need a few of those...You need a homegrown slugger who is exciting to watch, gets the fans young and old interested and is great for marketing (Jerseys, signings) and PR (Advertising)...A starting pitcher only appears in 30+ games, a promising power hitter plays 150-160 games barring injury...

The Marlins have always stockpiled pitching..How many never made it? How many were busts? Again, there needs to be a little more balance here as far as getting a slugger or 2 out of player deals...

We do need a lefty in the pen. Perez did very good with the Dodgers after he came from the braves. But i still dont want to give up on Lee. He has alot of potential still, specially now when he heated up alot during the 2nd half. We should keep him for another year IMO

IMO, if you can get Mota in the deal for Lee, you find a way to get it done.

I'm not so sure....but if it includes Miller I'm game. Mota will be 31 next season...

Miller models himslef after Zito and he seems to Pitch Like Zito...

I wouldnt Mind Having a Zito type pitcher in the rotation.
