Bobby Valentine clarifies his remarks towards the Florida Marlins

Posted by: Brett Lahde | Comments 0 Comments and 0 Reactions Yesterday we talked about ESPN baseball analyst taking a shot at the Florida Marlins on the Baseball Tonight telecast. He said this:

“If this is a major-league process, I hope I’m never in the process again. It’s very disturbing, confusing and it was insulting at times, but it’s over.

Valentine clarified some of the remarks on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Russo show on Thursday. This is what Valentine said:

“You know, I mean, I was reading in the paper I wasn’t a candidate, you know? And I don’t really like that stuff. You know, we did have conversations and then the next thing I know their leaks have people writing things that I’m no longer a candidate and they’re going in another direction. Well, you know, if that’s the case tell me. I’m a big boy. It’s real easy.

“To tell you the truth, the in-season stuff where you have all the rules and regulations that are set forth — rightfully so, I guess — by the commissioner that you have to interview so many different types of people from in and outside your organization before you’re allowed to hire a person you want to, it’s a pretty tough process. I don’t know that it’s tough. It doesn’t seem like it’s the way most industries do it.

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says that Valentine would have been perfect for the young team. He adds, “Florida has now fired or lost six coaches and a manager since last September while achieving well beyond their payroll and perhaps even their talent.

Isn't this like days old (???) and he even expounded on the Mad Dog thing with a later, more tempered version of events.

It seems like he is blaming the media more so than the FO now. Remember those ludicrous articles published about how Bo Porter was the frontrunner now or how just because the formal interview with Bobby Y was moved from Friday to some other time, it meant that the FO had soured on him?

Is it possible that Bobby V read all that, called the FO and took himself out of the running? Not that the FO passed him over, just that Bobby V got tired of reading crap in the newspaper? Especially if the FO couldn't assure him that they can quickly hire him due to the rules a baseball team has to follow in interviewing minority candidates.

While I'm not 100% sure Bobby V would have made a difference one way or another with this team at this point, I do think he would have been a quality hiring considering he would have been outside of the organization and would have brought a different persepective. He would have brought credibility to the position and organization that frankly Edwin does not, and he's got the right kind of mindset in the clubhouse to keep our young players straight. In addition, he is a very "likeable" manager and reaches out to the community in which he manages, which we will need in advance of the stadium to try and get more people on our side.

While I don't think we'll ever know what went on internally and externally considering Bobby V, it was embarassing.
