The Hopper and Brian Sanches Battling For The Last Bullpen Spot?

Featured Replies

Not factoring in Nunez, Hensley, Badenhop it's awesome how much better our projected Opening Day bullpen is to last year (yes I know it is 5 v 4):

Dunn/Webb/Choate/Mujica/Sanches v Pinto/Veras/Wood/Meyer

Just subtracting Pinto made the bullpen better. lol

Truth.

I too am very happy that we're having this discussion. It's going to be great not to have to let out a loud groan when they announce who's warming up in the bullpen during a close game (aka The Pinto Effect).

Mike Dunn is not considered as a depth arm. I'm sorry, but I just guarantee it's going to take a lot for him to get sent down to the minors. Beinfest likes the two lefty idea, we got Dunn in the Uggla trade, and he proved last year that he can be a good pitcher in the big leagues who, at the very least, dominates lefties.

At the end of the day, Dunn and Webb are ahead of Badenhop/Sanches on the depth chart, just for the simple fact that they have a lot more upside. Dunn being left-handed gives him an even slighter edge, imo.

The Marlins don't even consider Dunn as a guy who just gets lefties out; they've already said they see him as a full inning reliever with the potential to close.

Sure, but Sanches and Badenhop are known quantities. I don't think anyone disagrees with most of what you say.

Who has the most upside of literally all our relievers? Dunn

Who has the biggest control problems of all our relievers? Dunn

Who is club controlled and has an option? Dunn and Webb

If this becomes a numbers game, they don't want Hopper's salary in AAA, and they don't want to lose Sanches, just don't be surprised if Dunn is the odd man out for at least part of the season despite their desire to have two lefties. As said before, it's unlikely Webb is the odd man out as he is much more proven and really obliterates righties right now which is very important. And as said before, it's all initial bullpen posturing as the team will probably use 9-10 guys regardless and everyone will get their innings if not in April once injuries and random reliever ineffectiveness takes hold.

I'm personally much more interested in seeing what Coghlan looks like in CF, how Dominguez does, and whose going to be the 4th outfielder. Bullpen will sort itself out a lot easier than the impending position messes.
