May 28, 201214 yr Uhhhh ok this trade means nothing. I thoughtnthey were goin to call cousins up. We needed a righty outfield bat for the bench *shrug* I mean, our outfield is mostly lefties right now. Petersen, Coghlan, Dobbs, LoMo. We need a guy to fill the void of a righty outfield bat [solano isn't an outfielder by any means] til Kearns gets back. I thought Solano did pretty well out there Saturday. Especially considering it was his first attempt at it. Even had that assist at 2B if Omar had been able to hold onto it. I'm more concerned with his offense. Let's wait and see how he adjusts to the adjustments opposing pitchers are sure to make. I have high hopes, but willing to be patient. He misjudged a pretty simple fly ball that, only due to how high it was, he still caught. He's an infielder, he's not an outfielder. Coghlan, same thing, basically, but he's been in the outfield for so long he's probably forgotten how to field a grounder from 115 feet away. LoMo, well ... we've all exercised that one enough. Like I said.....I look at it being his first time out there. Shagged some balls before, but that's about it. When they called him up I said I thought they may turn him into an OFer. But I figured they would send him back down for a bit to get a bit of experience at the position. Circumstances didn't allow for that, I guess. I'm with Ozzie on this one in that I think the kid is athletic enough to handle it defensively. He has the range to handle the spacious OF here and has a strong enough arm. Reading the balls off the bat and taking better routes will come. BTW You forgot to mention another IFer we moved to the OF. Boni. Little different circumstances, but basically the same idea. He does just fine out there, even tho he was so hated on this board that most were making up their own facts about him. Before the small minded ones jump on that...Not comparing the two, just saying. Hoping that Solano's bat dosen't take as long to come around as Boni's did.
May 28, 201214 yr Well, to be fair, from a statistical standpoint ... They've got you beat. Like they did with Boni? Not being a stats guy, I don't really care about their minor league fueled stats.
May 28, 201214 yr Boni, Boni...You mean the guy with a career OPS+ of 81 (And a season OPS+ to match)? Yeah, I'd say we were right.

If he's not doing that much in the minors, he's gonna do even less in the majors. Boni, he improved. Can Solano do this? Definitely! But his track record doesn't show us anything yet.
May 31, 201214 yr You don't? Or do you just KNOW how he is going to work out? Solano deserves a spot on this team over Donnie Murphy... and that's about it. Emilio Bonifacio was a top 10 prospect when he was coming up with the Diamondbacks and he eventually panned out. Donovan Solano isn't for multiple reasons, the main one being he's 24 and has never topped a .700 OPS in the minors. He's backup infield fodder that, once reports come out on, will hit less than .260. You're not a stats guy. Fine. But that doesn't mean they don't give us logical people a good idea of where a player is headed.
