November 29, 200322 yr Credit: MyWay Finance BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Saturday it hit a single-day company sales record during the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving shopping sprees, taking in more than $1.52 billion nationally. Last year, Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, reported sales of $1.43 billion for the Friday after Thanksgiving. Have to remember that Wal-Mart has the most employees of any company (I think) and has loads of stores. Spread whatever the profit is out and it's not as much money as it seems.
November 30, 200322 yr WalMart= EVIL this is because? wal-mart's awesome. i hope they make some more $$$. costco, too.
November 30, 200322 yr Wal Mart = Evil. I agree. They have destroyed too many small towns for them to be considered good. I know, I know....there is the idea of enterprise in America. WalMart is the modern day Standard Oil. They undercut the competition, now thats its basically them, you see their customer service decreasing. I know, I know...you say Target. Target is not really a direct competitor (sp) of Walmart....they cater to more upscale bargain shoppers, Walmart to more middle to lower classes. And whats funny is that Costco is the main 'competition' to Sam's Club, owned by the Walton family, parent to Walmart. Kinda Ironic there.
November 30, 200322 yr they cause family businesses to go out of business. Thank god there are no WalMarts where I live
November 30, 200322 yr Give me a break people... doesn't every BIG corporation do the same thing? Kill it's competition for higher profits.
November 30, 200322 yr walmart runs more efficiently than any of its competitors--big chains and small businesses alike. that's a good thing. it translates into lower prices for the consumer as long as there's some sort of competition (see: target). i love walmart because they have the lowest prices. do i really care if mom/pop stores are going out of business? do i really care if super chains like kmart are going bankrupt? walmart started out small and engulfed the country because of its superior business model. in the end, i want all stores to run as efficiently as walmart. it's like jetblue and southwest... the sooner they run their competition into the ground, the better. less waste and more money for the people.
November 30, 200322 yr in one respect yes thats true. but if mom and pop stores are going out of business in small towns then there is less jobs for the people and that translates into less money available overall. you cant really compare airline travel with retail industries. again target and walmart are not competitors. kmart was their competition, but they were idiotic and were finished.
November 30, 200322 yr if i'm not mistaken, walmart is the biggest employer in this country. if a walmart moves into town and runs out mom/pop stores, you can bet that there will be new jobs to compensate. i think it's a good thing that walmart's prices are lower than kmart's were. i don't mind that kmart is gone now. that's the only point i had with the airline analogy. i will agree with you, however, that walmart = evil if i see prices go up as a result of no competition from stores like target, supermarkets, and other discount retail chains. oh yeah, and i go to both target and walmart to buy similar items. i'd call them competitors.

They run every store out of business and then jack up the prices. Also, every time they run stores out business that means less and less jobs
November 30, 200322 yr you know what they're doing right?? They run every store out of business and then jack up the prices.? Also, every time they run stores out business that means less and less jobs this coming from the guy who said: Thank god there are no WalMarts where I live have you even been inside a walmart before? there are plenty of walmarts in south florida and i can tell you there is no jacking up of prices. if a walmart comes to town and a little store runs out of business, how is the net effect a loss of jobs? you realize that the walmart has to hire employees, correct? look, i'm not saying walmart is the greatest corporation ever, but at the moment, i'm a walmart fan because they sell stuff for cheap. what's wrong with that?
November 30, 200322 yr they have low prices now, and then high prices later once all the competition is gone
November 30, 200322 yr why are they evil? they are cheap as hell. if anything kmart and target are evil. who cares about small town family stores? those things are dumb and they always wanna jip u. plus they dont got what you want and dont accept debit/credit. u all suk.
November 30, 200322 yr plus another reason wal-mart is evil is they are nazi's when decided the king of stuff they sell (i.e. dvds, magazines)
November 30, 200322 yr owners of mom and pop stores and their employees generally command higher wages than walmart employees.... there may or may not be a net loss in jobs, but look at wage differences. and walmart and target are competitors, albeit indirectly. too many look at a company for the bottom line which is the prices which is all that matters to them, and there is nothing wrong with that really.... but if you know business, you realize the horrors of walmart from a number of other perspectives. but you do have to admire them for their business philosophy of being cutthroat and ruthless, unless of course your bottom line is not a dollar but also with some ethical and moral treatment of the community you enter into. if you are from a small town and have endured Wal-Mart's wrath, then you know what I am talking about....its as simple as that. for the consumer, Wal Mart is cheap, they take a loss on some products in order to attract customers into the store for more high dollar merchandise, but then again what retail store doesnt? but if you think WalMart is an ethical saint....think again.
November 30, 200322 yr i dont know about you people but i love 24 hour wal marts. nothing beats buying soda and DVDs @ 3 am.
December 2, 200322 yr dont you mean cokes? haha WALMART = MEGA-LO-MART in one sense, walmart helps the people because its cheaper to buy stuff. On the other hand, it runs the "little man" out of town. I know a lot of you don't listen to country, but Alan Jackson about what walmarts and such do to the mom and pops. The song is called "Little Man". here it is... I remember walk'in round the court square sidewalk Lookin' in windows at things I couldn't want There's johnson's hardware and morgans jewelry And the ol' Lee king's apothecary They ware the little man The little man I go back now and the stores are all empty Except for an old coke sign from 1950 Boarded up like they never existed Or renovated and called historic districts There goes the little man There goes the little man Now the court square's just a set of streets That the people go round but they seldom think Bout the little man that built this town Before the big money shut em down And killed the little man Oh the little man He pumped your gas and he cleaned your glass And one cold rainy night he fixed your flat The new stores came where you do it yourself You buy a lotto ticket and food off the shelf Forget about the little man Forget about that little man He hung on there for a few more years But he couldn't sell slurpees And he wouldn't sell beer Now the bank rents the station To a down the road And sell velvet Elvis and Second - hand clothes There goes little man There goes another little man Now the are lined up in a concrete strip You can buy the world with just one trip And save a penny cause it's jumbo size They don't even realize They'er killin' the little man Oh the little man It wasn't long when I was a child An old black man came with his plow He broke the ground where we grew our garden Back before we'd all forgot about the little man The little man Long live the little man God bless the little man
December 2, 200322 yr my point exactly furman... people see walmart for all its cheap prices and ignore all the evils this corporation brings. if you think microsoft is an evil corporation then what the hell is walmart? at least bill gates gives back to numerous charitable causes out of his OWN pocket and not Microsofts.
December 4, 200322 yr You also have to realize that Wal Mart continues to open more and more stores, so naturally their gross sales will rise. The key would be to analyze the sales per store and compare that number to previous years. This number is skewed and of course everyone ignores that small fact.
