A big week for the Marlins and its future

Featured Replies

As we all know Pudge has a week as of today to sign with the Marlins or go for that pot of gold under the rainbow. Its also a big week for Castillo because I believe the team will move to Plan "B" if Castillo doesn't accept the offer by the fish. They wanted to have Lowell and Castillo signed by the begin of this week and put all there efforts this week on Pudge. IMO I think the Marlins will make one finally pitch for both late in the week before moving on. O by the way, I understand alot of you guys want to and think Hooper is the 2B of the future. NO his not. His average at best.Good kid with great heart. As for Berardino column his "sources" come from his good friend Ken Rosenthal. Mike could be right in the end with the Cubs but IMO Boston is the team that could end up with Castillo "IF" this become a bidding war as his agents want it to be.

Also want your opinion on something, with Sexson deal about to be complete after Monday. Did the Marlins get enough for DLee? Here's the trade for Sexson for those that haven't seen it,

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1674507

I hope the PTNL is as good as Del Rosa :confused

ed, do you know anything about how serious the marlins are about re-signing pudge? are they willing to give more than what has been rumored so far?

We were in a completely different situation than Milwaukee when we traded Lee. But that's a debate for another day. We got what we got, and only time will tell who got the better of it.

I'm not too surprised to hear Rosenthal is the genesis of many of Berardino's recent "scoops", I know he and Ken are buddies and have been for years.

Generally, I tend to agree with you about Hooper, as to whether he's next year's starting 2B guy. I do believe he's capable of winning an infield utility spot next spring, and I believe if called upon he could prove the equivalent of Fox's performance two seaons ago.

On the Sexson thing, the Brewers take on significantly more salary than the Marlins did in taking Choi and a PTBNL. The driver for this whole exercise has been to live within a $60 mil payroll and be competitive. Taking on $3mil in salary would not have helped the Marlins in their quest.

Lee was a Salary dump. I do not feel good about the Choi for Lee deal until I hear who is the PTBNL.

imo, even if the PTBNL is EdCanes, im happy with this deal

IMO the Marlins will add another year to the two year offer, but making it a club opition on the three with incentives like AB/ games played in a season, RBI's, etc. Also dumping the value to 8-9 a year, if Castillo goes elsewhere or it appears to be a lost case. It's tough tell right now, well see... :hat

I actually think that the Brewers got a lot fo garbage for Sexson. Yeah, Overbay is a solid prospect, but I think Choi is much better. De La Rosa, I dont know enough about to comment, but our PTBNL could match that, but that depends. We all know what Counsel is capable of - and the Brewers arent going to sniff a World Series.

In many ways, the Brewers got a bad deal here. They traded away a big part of their offense, and with a new stadium and all they should be keeping it. Poorly run franchise and I think a bad trade from a monetary perspective. They took on a significant amount of money in this trade, and only saved about $5M. We saved about $6.5M with Choi, who is a better prospect ANd isnt arb. eligible for years.

I dont see Castillo sticking around - which is fine with me. It is going to be either Pudge or Castillo I feel, and one way or another, that will have to happen this week.

if we dont get Pudge, but keep Lowell and Castillo, I'll be satisfied. That's to say that Ramon Castro is legally able to play.

Well atleast we know that Mike Lowell is pretty much a done deal and Luis when is all said and done will realize that the Marlins are the best place for him.

As for Pudge, I think that he is going to have to give a little if he really wants to stay here as he says he does...if not then he may be as good as gone. :banghead

This will be a big Week for the Marlins. If Castillo doesnt accept our contract then fine, it will give us more time and money to sign Pudge and Lowell.

We just need to act fast on Pudge.

AGAIN I'll post the question did the Marlins rush into the DLee trade?....

"The Dodgers offered catcher Paul Lo Duca and RHP Joel Hanrahan to the Brewers for Richie Sexson, but an unwillingness to give up outfield prospect Franklin Gutierrez prevented a deal from getting done." LA Times source

Now with Pudge having one foot out the door, do you think Lo Duca would have look nice in Teal? O by the way RHP Joel Hanrahan is a very good pitching prospect coming into last season he and Edwin Jackson were neck and neck for top honors in there farm system by some. I thought early last week Sexson was going to LA for Lo Duca.

Well I have another question who's has the most trade value out of Looper, Redman, and Encarnacion?

Are the Marlins lookin for buyer on Looper or Redman? and if so do they try to include Encarnacion?

It seem that's what are "trying" to do :whistle

This will be an interesting week indeed. I have to say I am glad that Luiy took the money he did, we got a bargain for him. Plus, he sets a precedent for Pudge to follow. Take less money and stay with the club, or leave and be a greedy S.O.B. Luiy took the former, will Pudge as well?

No Ed, the Marlins did not "rush" to make their deal for Lee. No business, in baseball or not can manage their finances by hoping that another deal or component will subsequently fall into place.

The Marlins made the deal they did to clear payroll. Unlike the D'backs/Brewer's deal the Marlins were looking to maximizing their payroll savings, not garner as many players as they could. Taking on three or four MLB players was not going to help the Fish, in fact the opposite is true.

Because the Dodger's are alleged to have offered (and no one knows for sure who was or wasn't offered) X players for Sexson doesn't mean they would have offered the same package to the Marlins for Lee or that anyone would have offered more than the Marlins received as compensation.

Marlins 2003, good points BUT I do feel IMO that the Marlins had the pedal to the mental when this thing started two weeks ago. They are trying to move down there list of priorities as fast as possible and not spending to much time on one thing ie DLee trade. And it COULD have cost them here just because another team(Dodgers) wanted to wait for another player(Sexson) to move before moving on yours(DLee), left us with a no so good deal. I'm not saying I don't like the deal, Choi is really going to be something once Perry and Bill get a hold of him. I just feel like the fast break off-season approach could be selling yourself short. Hey just look at the deal we end up with, came down the morning of after the O's deal fell apart. I understand why they are doing it, I just don't agree...that's all

As gentlemen, we can agree to disagree on this one.

I understand why they are doing it, I just don't agree...that's all After looking at the activity this week (Lowell/Castillo contracts and Pudge offers), I feel that our front office is committed to keep the core of the team as much as possible. I know they say they do, but actions talk louder than words.

Getting Choi was a big plus. if you get prospects for Lee, you still have to go out and get a decent OF and spent 3-5 millions to get something decent. Now Conine can stay on the LF and we saved another multi-million dollar salary. Choi and Cabs are playing for peanuts. I think given the ciscumstances, this was the right deal for the Fish.

Now the question is, can the CHOIsen one produce enough to be an every day 1B? I think yes, but we must be patient. Even Cabs struggled and he came back with a vengance.

I think in the end the Lee deal will be perfect. We are getting more than one PTBNL. Their names? Luis Castillo, Mike Lowell for more time, and possibly Pudge Rodriguez. Pretty good deal, don't you think?

And besides, time was a factor here. They are working against the Pearl Harbor clock. IMO They are going about this perfectly because Luiy and Mikey being generous a head of Pudge might force his hand and bring him back for that 3 year 24 milish range I am fond of.

Juanky you hit a home run with your post!

There's also the issue of Chicago actually signing Lee to a long term contract. At the very least they're headed for arbitration for this next year, if they don't get a multi-year deal done beforehand. DLee was reportedly asking Baltimore for a $9 million (gulp) a year multi-year deal. He obviously feels that he's worth what Sexson was worth this year ($8.625 Million) and with an improving economy (remembering the old saying "a rising tide lifts all boats") Derrek may decide to simply go to arbitration and move into free agency next year in an improved market, leaving the Cubs with nothing to show for the trade.

The name that appears to floating around is F. Beltran.

Redman, Looper and then Enc, who has none, zero, nada, zilch. What team in their right mind would go to arbitration with Enc and risk paying the guy $6 million for one season and be willing to trade anything of value for the chance to get so scr*wed?

If you include Enc in any deal with Redman or Looper you diminish the value of the latter two significantly.
