Latroy Hawkins a cub

Featured Replies

Heard it from the WrigleyVille Lounge, apparently it was reported by a radio station in Chicago but the details will hit the public later on tonight

Great pickup for them....

*doesnt care*

Good for you.

Great addition, price ok. Hope that La Troy keeps contributing like he did last year, cause 3 years is a looooong time for a reliever. He should continue to set up Borowski though, Joe's less emotional on the mound.

remeber the grame lloyd deal w. montreal.... 3 years at 3.3 mill and he busted and sucked . plus wrigly is no pitchers place

you're right. it's alos no hitters park either. it's neutral. it depends on the wind. the wind blows in all year except late June through early August, then it blows out making it a hitter's park. with no wind, is netural. Wrigley is not a hitter's park and it's not a pitcher's park. i watch 100+ Cubs games every season, and i usually keep records of such things for the last 2 seasons; Wrigley is neutral.

that aside, the Cubs are looking mighty good in the Central.

then why do they say d. lee willh it 40+ and why did aramis' avg go up as well as hrs. common dood, its a hitters park

because of the pitching staffs and stadiums int he NL Central. the Brewers staff and Miller Park, and the Reds Staff anywhere. looks very promising to central hitters. Ramirez' average went down as a Cub. but his slugging went up. but his SLG at Wrigley was about the same as it was with the Pirates, his SLG on the road however, was near 600.

actually, if you look at the cubs' phenomenal pitching staff and the number of runs scored in wrigley the past year or two, it actually classifies as a pitchers park (which goes to tell you how flawed the runs scored calculation is if).

if you examine the runs scored index over a large span of time, then you can get an idea for what kind of park it really is.

ESPN looked at lifetime park indices and ranked wrigley field as the #8 hitters' park of all time.

Cubs will probaly give up a first rounder if the Twins offer Hawkins Arbitration. Stupid deal! A relief pitcher for your first round pick? Does the Billy Goat have an effect on the Front office also? No Wonder the Cubs havent won a WS in ages.

I wasn't impressed with the draft class this year anyway, and we are picking 25th, so it isn't that big of a deal. I feel that good draft picks can be made in other rounds then the 1st, and not many of the highly sought-after players will fall to the 25th so the Cubs would have to try to get some good pickups anyway.

Who knows. Maybe LaTroy will sign after December 7th. That would be a nice bonus.

Hawkins is a very good pitcher, and 1st round draft picks mean less in baseball than any other sport, so I have to disagree. I thought this was a very good move by the Cubs. If they don't have Hawkins closing on opening day, they are on crack, he has all the tools IMO to be a very good closer.

Joe Borowski is the Cubs closer. LaTroy just provides a great setup man and the bridge to JoBo. I don't think LaTroy has the makeup to be a closer. Borowski does.

LaTroy to Borowski is a very good combo.

LaTroy to Borowski is a very good combo. Borowski is a setup man. He doesn't have the stuff to consistently shut it down and close games for a quality team like the north siders, while LaTroy can gun it at 97+ with pinpoint control. They should use Borowski as the bridge to LaTroy, I think he would go a great job there, and the Cubs could virtually make most games a 7 inning game.

Everyone knows LaTroy doesn't have the makeup to close, and Borowski does.

LaTroy will not close. Borowski will. Your probably right, Dusty will have Borowski close.

But Borowski isn't good enough and doesn't have the stuff to be a consistent closer year in and year out.

Hawkins has all the tools to be a closer, and I think he should get a chance. But I guess it's hard to change Borowski to a set up man with the year he had last year.

But I can say with confidence that Borowski won't have such a great year this year as closer if he closes, and when that happens, you will see Hawkins close. And you can quote me on that if I'm wrong, I don't care, because I think i'm right about that.

I wouldn't trust Hawkins closing...he seems not to be able to handle the pressure.

Maybe so, but with the stuff he has, I think he should at least get a chance.

he definitely has some major gas. For the sort of money he was paid, the Yanks would of been better off signing him instead of ol' Flash.

Exactly. He is one of the best Set Up men, but he just doesn't have the makeup to close.

I am confident Borowski can easily replicate his '03 year.

ZiPS Projections confirmed it, though they aren't a sure thing it is a fun projection system.

I can guarantee you that Borowski will have a VERY similar year to 2003. Why would we see a drop in numbers when he pitched even better for us in 2002 just in a different role. Borowski is the Cubs closer and a pretty good one at that.

Maybe's it's his workmanlike attitude and demeanor on the mound or his less than impressive stuff, but I just don't think Borowski can continue to be a very good closer. I'll be a believer if he has a year like he did last year closing in 2004, but I am skeptical.
