Posted May 21, 20168 yr As of right now, we have three good starters (Fernandez, Chen, Conley) and two crappy ones. We have a bunch of relievers in the bullpen who are failed starters and have proven to be pretty good out of the pen in short spurts. Instead of throwing Koehler/Nico out there every 5 days, why not let pitchers go 3 innings max so they only face the order one time, thus making them more effective? I think this team can do it. Basically our entire bullpen is failed starters capable of throwing multiple innings, and those failed starters have been effective relievers. Urena has looked better as a reliever, McGowan has looked good as a reliever, Edwin Jackson has been much better as a reliever in his career, and I bet that Tom Koehler would be a lot better if he weren't being used as a traditional starter. The team could also extend Phelps from time to time and have him throw 2 innings instead of just being a traditional setup guy. Phelps, obviously, has been tremendous. Why not try something different? Koehler is not getting it done in his current role and Nicolino is just flat out terrible. This would be a better option imo. If they're worried that they'd run out of arms, the solution is pretty simple there too. Just carry an extra reliever. Do we really need Cole Gillespie on the bench?

May 21, 20168 yr Author because then they get tired and you force your other 3 starters to go 8 innings every game no matter what? So it's better to have two awful starters go out there consistently for 40% of your games? Just have a set schedule for the games. Instead of Koehler for as long as possible, make it Koehler/Urena & instead of Nicolino, throw out Jackson/McGowan. And carry an extra reliever. Because Cole Gillespie is absolutely irrelevant. Only reason why this team won't do it is because they think like traditional robots and never adapt to anything. The Rays tried this last year where they wouldn't let their rotation face the opposing lineup more than 2 times through the order unless it was Archer who was dominant. Certainly didn't kill them. Not surprising that the Rays are a much better organization. They understand their roster and get the most out of it year after year despite payroll limitations, while the Marlins constantly put players in position to fail despite constantly having a more talented roster.
May 21, 20168 yr Marlins have also had shit for player development staff and shit for on field management over the years as well...
May 21, 20168 yr Author Marlins have also had shit for player development staff and shit for on field management over the years as well... Seems like we're agreeing, no? Isn't managing about putting your players/team in the best possible situation to succeed? Koehler/Nicolino will ultimately be the reason why this team goes nowhere.

Ok fine, I disagree, but I can see why you'd think that. What if I said keep Koehler in his current role as a traditional #4, and make Nicolino starts bullpen days? Would that make more sense? So, 1 bullpen day. Seriously, Nicolino is just awful.

If you goal is to win anything, its dumb and suicide for your staff. this is where Mike Hill being an abject failure at his job comes into play though.... (also Fernandez is getting shut down at some point, which would further tax your pen)

If you goal is to win anything, its dumb and suicide for your staff. this is where Mike Hill being an abject failure at his job comes into play though.... (also Fernandez is getting shut down at some point, which would further tax your pen) From my understanding, Fernandez is at a limit of 180 that is about as strict as Matt Harvey's limit last year. Even if 180 is the limit, he'll pretty much be available for the whole year. Plus, if they're true to their word, the games will probably be meaningless by September anyway so who cares. The fact that no team has ever done it consistently is a dumb reason to not try it. And, again, the Rays did do it for much of last year quite successfully. The Rays still do it to a lesser extent actually. Erasmo Ramirez could easily be on any team's rotation including theirs, but they feel like he's more valuable giving them 100+ innings out of the pen in high-leverage situations. We have the bullpen to at least experiment with this. Coming into the year, the only nice thing about this bullpen was the fact that it was a bunch of failed starters who could give multiple innings because they had started before.
May 21, 20168 yr This won't happen because: 1. Tom Koehler is one of the best pitchers in baseball. 2. The Marlins will never try anything new and innovative.
May 21, 20168 yr The Rays still averaged 5.6 IP per start which was just below the 5.8 IP per start league wide in 2015. You are basically proposing to half that for 2/5 of the starts or at worst 1/5 of the starts. That's why it wont happen.
