It’s a girl!

Maria Arias, who was Jose Fernandez’s girlfriend, delivered their child Friday night, according to sources.

The baby’s name: Penelope.

Fernandez picked out the name in August after finding out the baby’s sex.

The Miami Marlins pitcher and two companions died one month later in a boating accident.

Fernandez was excited about becoming a father. At his funeral service, Fernandez’s agent, Scott Boras, described a conversation he had with the pitcher.

"He wanted to know, am I going to be a good father?” Boras said during the eulogy. “And I told him, you’re going to be a great father because you’re going to treat your child in the same way that your mother treated you and you’ll know exactly what to do," he said. "The next day he ordered a baseball glove in all those colors he loved and he put ‘Penelope’ on it."

Still waiting for the details (i.e, height, weight).

Per http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-marlins/fl-sp-jose-fernandez-daughter-born-penelope-20170225-story.html article the attorney will go to court this week to make Penelope an heir to Jose's estate. It appears Jose's girlfriend and Jose's mother have become very close. Penelope's last name is unknown at this time but will probably be known at the time of the filing.

Sports News reported in "Fernandez's family wants his newborn daughter to be sold heir" the following:

The late Jose Fernandez's family members want to make his newborn daughter the sole heir to his estate.

ESPN reported Monday that family attorney Ralph Fernandez, no relation to the late pitcher, plans to file that motion in court soon and will also seek to have Fernandez's mother, Maria Arias, declared the personal representative to the minor.

Fernandez died in a boating accident in South Florida Sept. 25 at the age of 24. The families of the other two passengers killed in that crash have filed wrongful death lawsuits against Fernandez's estate, seeking $2 million each. According to ESPN, the estate is valued at $2 million to $3 million.

The late pitcher's daughter, Penelope, was born Friday.

"This (baby) has been great for everyone," Ralph Fernandez told ESPN.

"This is the only bit of good news in the past five months since the tragedy." In the second paragraph it states that the court document states "it will seek to have Fernandez's mother, Maria Arias, declared the personal representative to the minor." BUT I thought Maria is/was the girlfriend so something is wrong.
