January 19, 20188 yr even the move he suggested in the article made no sense. Prado is a better player when healthy and all its doing is adding more salary a few years from now when the goal should be to do the opposite, not to mention Tomas has a -1.4 WAR in his first three years and the only positions he isnt a liability at we have starters already in Bour and Anderson. He's much younger than Prado as he's only 27. In 2016 he put up an .820 OPS and hit 31 HR. I'll take that over an aging Prado.
January 19, 20188 yr Lol you missed the title? It said it all... "Trade Proposal for Jeter's Selfish Plan"... there was zero reason to put the word selfish in the title. LOL Yes, I read the title. That's why I read it to begin with. The problem is that I agree with Sherman so the title didn't jump out at me as unfair. I guess to an unbiased reader it would have stood out. Sorry, I just hate Jeter. LOL

He is bad. Hence his negative WAR every single year he's been in the big leagues, even that 2016 year. Best case scenario for him is he could be a decent DH for an AL team. And i'm also younger than Prado, that doesnt mean im better than him. Prado is a significantly better player, not to mention trading prado wouldnt be about getting a better player, it would be about cutting his salary for 2019 and possibly getting a decent prospect. Getting a worse player in Tomas for another 17 million in 2020 without getting a prospect would be an absolutely ridiculous deal to make.

Well, I don't think you know much about anything so there's that. While you might be younger than Tomas, you could neither hit 30 hr's or OPS .820 so that was a ridiculous statement. Yes, his WAR sucks because he's bad at defense. That doesn't really matter since we aren't going to be winning regardless. Also, Prado is pretty much done. I did say that if Tomas hits well we could eat half of his salary and then flip him to an AL team that needs a DH. An old Prado isn't going to get you anything in a trade. The last thing is that salary won't matter much the next few seasons because we aren't going to have any highly paid contracts other than Chen and Prado or Tomas after 2018. One extra year of Tomas won't make any difference. I mean it might to Jeters bonus, but I really don't about that.

IDC what his offensive stats are, first off, that was one good year offensively out of the 3 he's been in the big leagues. He had a 108 OPS+ in that year and well under 100 in his other 2 years. In other words, this great offensive guy youre claiming he is has been below average offensively in 2 of his 3 MLB seasons. 2nd, defense matters, and if he is that bad at defense, you wont get anything in a trade for him, and there is a good chance youre paying another bad player an untradeable 17 million in salary in 2 years, when if you just keep Prado, Ziegler, and Tazawa, you lose Ziegler and Tazawa's salary after this year and Prado after next year. 3rd, you contradicted your own post. If winning doesnt matter, it makes 0 sense to acquire a guy who will cost 17 million in 2020 and isnt particularly good at all simply because he might be able to hit some HR's. 4th: No one is giving you anything for Tomas when he is owed 42 million over the next 3 years and has 0 positional versatility, is terrible defensively, and isnt particularly good offensively. 5th: Salary still matters even if we dont have any highly paid contracts. You dont just pay someone 17 million for the sake of spending money. You spend as little as possible and play young kids and save the 17 million for organizational profit and keep it until youre ready to make a legitimate splash in free agency that actually helps the organization win in the future.
January 19, 20188 yr Youre essentially for advocating for adding a worse player and 17 million more in 2020 because 30 hr's!!!

He was a rookie in 2015 and injured most of 17. I think 2016 is a better indicator of the type of hitter he is. It's not just the 30 hr's. He also had an .820 OPS. Prado hasn't had an .820 OPS since 2009. He's also 34 years old while Tomas is only 27. Tomas is the better player now. Also, I'm not advocating anything. I was just agreeing with Sherman's sentiment. Winning is obviously not the issue but if we can get a player capable of hitting 30 plus hr's while OPSing over .800 we will have a player with greater trade value at mid season. Getting better young players back is the whole point. Prado is done and isn't getting you shit back. Of course you are chosing to ignore Prado's injury plagued season at age 33 while counting Tomas small sample size last season because of injury at the age of 26. Yes defense does matter but he has also been played out of position because of Goldschmidt. From what I've read his defense at 1st base is adequate.

Yes defense does matter but he has also been played out of position because of Goldschmidt. From what I've read his defense at 1st base is adequate. He was a rookie by designation. He was not a rookie by actual experience. He was 25 years old and had played professional baseball in cuba. Being a rookie is not an excuse for being terrible offensively and defensively. And again, having an .820 OPS is nothing when your defense is so bad that youre still a negative WAR player. Tomas will never have greater trade value than Prado at any point because he is a lesser player and has an additional year at 17 million in 2020 on his deal and he is simply put not a good player. Prado when healthy has been a 2-3 WAR player his entire career and has a game that would age well due to the type of hitter he is and the positional versatility he gives you defensively. Tomas had a negative war in each of his first 2 seasons and in both of those years Prado was over 3 WAR. Simply put, Tomas is a significantly worse player than Prado despite being younger and has an additional year on his contract for nearly 17 million. Even if a team just plays Tomas at DH, he has significantly less value than Prado on the trade market because he has no defensive versatility and an additional year at 17 million is a terrible use of money for a guy only capable of barely being above average as a hitter at his peak.
January 19, 20188 yr I can't believe this is still going. Tomas stinks. Defense counts in player evaluations. He also just got arrested for driving 105 mph so he clearly has his head in the right place. If we want to come up with ridiculous off the wall trades for cuban guys to gamble on, how about go get Rusney Castillo - who actually was pretty good in AAA last year. .857 OPS and radically decreased GB rate. He's 3/$38. Red Sox can't use him at all as if they put him on their 40 man, they can't waive him again and that would destroy them for luxury tax purposes for a player not on the team. He's in purgatory. Send them over Castro (Pedroia is out for a few months, they could put him in DH rotation, Hanley not on the books next year so he can take that roll) and Zielger/Tazawa and that's basically $30 million bucks so you're bailing the Red Sox out $8 million bucks which they will be super pysched about. Take back Castillo and a good prospect package to account for Castro/RP and absorbing the money. Might make a lot of sense to get a Castillo breakout and a good prospect or two they'd control for 6 years. It's not like any of us are expecting much back from Castillo and the RP anyways. Importantly in this also, 2018 payroll goes down so Jeter can get his bonus! (sigh). I can make up wild roll the dice trades too.

I was looking at his stats a few months back and he had a really nice year in Pawtucket. Would be a really nice buy low opportunity as opposed to the previous regime which loved to buy high and sell low.
