Well, I said it after the Lee trade and I'll say it again.The Marlins are on this type of fasttrack offseason and don't really have time to spend too much time on one trade or negotiation with a player. WHY??? well with so many players arbitration eligible and trying to get something for this guys is not easy. Alot people know weren't going to sign everybody BUT figuring out who were going to keep is something else. The Marlins on top of everybody knowing they can't keep everybody or working against the clock are doing a good job. Dec.20 is a big date to keep in mind not just for those Marlins arbitration eligible but all MLB arbitration eligible players. Its the day a team must decide who to offer and who not to offer. They expect ALOT and I mean alot of players on the market with players not offer arbitration. Its not only going to make difficult to trade players but also devalue those free agent already on the market. Could it this mean more money for Vlad? Yes and NO. Its not about money with Vlad right now, its more about security(long term deal) Ask yourself if the Marlins offered the same deal or close to O's in term of years don't you think he'd already be wearing teal? Will see tommorrow or better yet the end of week to see what happens :mischief2

What was Red going to make this season?

 

Because we would have been basically paying that much for these vaunted "prospects" that he suddenly would have been worth.

would you rather have Red or AJ? because that is basically what it comes down too...

 

and the fact that AJ MIGHT not be ready until May or later means we get to try our some younger pitchers to see how they can handle big league hitters. in the long run its best for the team and that is all that matters.

One of two thingsare going on - either the Marlins arecrazy and liquidating all their assets, or they are setting themselves up for the 'meat' of the offseason. The first is ludicrous, and what the media would have you believe. But you dont build a championship team in less than a year by being crazy - or completely lucky. Or dumb. So I opt for the latter - and I have said this in the past - Vlad is going to stay unsigend until sometime in Jan. I think the arbitration market is going to give us what we are looking for and in a sense, all these deals we have made cant be completely weighed until we see who we get in that market. Dec. 20 - let the madness begin.

 

Vlad, to me, is looking less and less appealing. The only upside is the impact he couldhave with getting a stadium. Winning though, could do that just as well - and Cabrera is going to be a star, too, along with Lowell, Castillo, Conine, Beckett, Burnett, etc.

Honestly, I'd take the latter, considering we could easily field a very good outfield right now.

 

That being said, it's not like I'd throw a fit if we got Vlad, but I'm beginning to think it might be wiser to spend the money elsewhere.

The Marlins traded Mark Redman to Oakland this week and have shed significant payroll. Gone are Pudge Rodriguez ($10 million), Derrek Lee ($4.25 million), Juan Encarnacion and Ugueth Urbina ($8 million combined) and Redman ($2.15 million), for a total savings of $24.4 million
