Brad Penny & Carl Pavano news

Featured Replies

I'm hoping that Carl has turned the corner into the land of greatness that everyone was predicting for him before he developed arm trouble.

That said, I can also admit that it's a risky business to offer any pitcher a long term deal, but Pavs :hat deserves a 2yr deal

one-year deals are smart for these two. First of all, there has been a lot of change from last year. Forgetting the fact that a lot of lucky things fell right for the Fish last year, there has also been a lot of turnover - the defense has inarguably gotten worse with the loss of Lee, and Pudge will not be calling the games anymore. Let's see how that impacts their pitching before we assume that last year's performances will project into 2005 and beyond. Secondly, even if they both repeat their 2003 performances (which i hope they do), their value from a salary perspective will grow only to a modest extent. Neither of these guys were world-beaters last year....Penny had an ERA of 4.15 and Pavano was 4.30, both guys were brilliant some times, got shelled in others, and that continued all the way into the World Series. Unless their production immensely increases, a long-term deal for either Penny or Pavano will be worth the same 4-5 million per year next year as it would have been worth this year, had the Marlins decided to give them a long-term deal.

Pavano is a hell of a horse. He logged over 200 innings, walked only 49, had a K/BB ratio of almost three, and completed two games. He was the kind of pitcher a while back that would struggle if he went too long in games, but now he has become the kind of pitcher that pitches very well in later innings and seems to gain more energy from it.

I think he is the better long term investment than Penny, and Penny will net more on the open market trade wise.

Per ESPNEWS. Both Penny and pavano have signed one-year deals, no details on money yet.

I WANT DETAILS NOW BIZNATCH!!!

:D

I'm guessing its around the same price range that the Marlins had offered. Good job by avoiding arbtration by the Marlins.

The Associated Press reported that Pavano signed for $3.8 million, and Penny will receive $3,725,000.

Wow, I think we're slightly overpaying for more. They must've had some good arbitration plans or something because wow, can you say overpaying.

edit: sorry didnt see other post
