Spring Training in Ft. Lauderdale

Featured Replies

I found this article on a spring training magazine's website. I see that the site of Ft. Lauderdale Stadium and Lockhart Stadium is a possible site for a future Marlins home. Is there anything to this?

I remember Ft. Lauderdale Stadium when the Yankees used to train there. My family owns a place in the Ft. Lauderdale are, and we would go to a Yankees spring training game or a Fort Lauderdale Yankees game (Yankee A team in Florida State League then) each year. I even remember when we used to go to Ft. Lauderdale during the summer when the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers used to pack them in at Lockhart Stadium.

I know the current occupants of Ft. Lauderdale Stadium, the Orioles, are itchy to leave. Does anyone know what the future for that facility holds?

This is one of the sites, I believe, proposed to be the permanent home of the Marlins in the regular season. I do believe, however, that the proposition of this site wasn't with the intent of putting the Marlins there, but of getting the Marlins a better deal elsewhere.

There are currently three offers on the table for the Marlins:

-Proposal from the City of Miami to restructure the Orange Bowl property to allow an adjoining baseball stadium to be placed next to the stadium.

-Invitation from Ft. Lauderdale for the Marlins to play in the spring training facility near the fairgrounds, which would involve substantial add-ons to get the stadium to accommodate 40,000 seats or so.

-Offer from Don King for the Marlins to use his West Palm Beach property to build a stadium, which includes a TriRail attachment.

It's odd how there hasn't been any news over the past 2 weeks. Wasn't Miami-Dade County supposed to come back with their own offer by now? Not having heard anymore on the OB deal makes me wonder if something else is in the works.

correct, I believe this is the last year on the Orioles contract to play there, & they are not planning on renewing. The group in Broward that proposed a Marlins stadium plan there didn't seem to have much idea about financing, and some writers didn't feel they made a "serious" proposal. We'll see if anything else surfaces about it in the coming weeks....

FutureGM i hope its the third one , if there is a Tri-rail attachment Marlins will have no problem filling seats. That is why alot of the major city stadiums do so well is because of mass transit going to them , SF , Philly, Boston , Yanks and Mets .
