Winter League Highlights

Featured Replies

A number of Marlins players tuned up for spring training with stellar winter league seasons that included championships for second baseman Luis Castillo and outfielder Miguel Cabrera, who helped their teams win berths in the four-nation Caribbean Series that opened in Santo Domingo on Sunday.

Cabrera batted .287 in 129 at-bats and slugged five home runs in 16 games in the round-robin playoff semifinals to lead Aragua to the Venezuelan League title, and Castillo batted .316 and scored 15 runs in 15 postseason games as Licey won the Dominican championship.

And though outfielder Abraham Nu?ez's team wasn't good enough to make the Dominican playoffs, that didn't stop him from leading the league in four categories and finishing second in the voting for the regular-season MVP award. Nu?ez, who is expected to battle for the Marlins' fourth outfield spot this spring, batted .292 in 178 at-bats while leading the league in runs (36), RBI (35), doubles (12) and tying for the lead with 12 homers for the Estrellas Orientes of San Pedro de Macoris.

In Puerto Rico, Ramon Castro, who will compete with Mike Redmond for the starting catcher job, slugged eight homers and drove in 25 runs in 29 games for Santurce, while in Venezuela the Marlins' new first baseman Hee Seop Choi batted .271 with four homers but made three errors in 22 games for Magallanes.

Also in Venezuela, left-hander Matt Perisho, who will come to camp on a minor-league contract to fight for a spot in the Marlins' bullpen, was second in the league with seven regular-season wins, then went 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 13 2/3 playoff innings for Occidente, and shortstop Alex Gonzalez batted .314 with four homers and 13 RBI in 24 games for Caracas.
