Projected Starting Pitchers

Tommy Phelps & Clay Condrey

Ramp's prediction:9-5 Marlins....Phelps is shaky but the offense helps him out big time.....

Phelps came in last week, for starter J. Wayne, in the 1st inn. with no outs and pitched 4 good innings....not too shaky!

Since no Marlin has ever faced Clay Condrey, here is how some Marlins fare in Qualcomm Stadium(over the past 3 years)

Blue=doesnt like the Q

Red=loves the Q

Teal=would rather be a Padre

Juan Pierre 90ab 25h 1triple 1hr 11rbi 7sb .278avg

Luis Castillo 29ab 9h 2doubles 2rbi .310avg

Mike Lowell 23ab 3h 1double 1rbi .130avg

Todd has been 'seeing beach balls' recently and its nice to see that he plays well in Qualcomm.....

He's only going 5... :confused

crystal ball?

Even though Condrey's ERA is over 8, hes been much better at home then on the road. His home ERA is around 5, his road ERA is around 11. Also, his night ERA is around 5, his day ERA around 11 with about equal innings in each. go figure!

McKeon, Marlins hit the road

Marlins (17-22) at Padres (12-25), 10:05 p.m. ET

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

SAN DIEGO -- After a wild and hectic homestand, the Marlins head out West for the start of a 12-game roadtrip. They bring with them a new manager, a pitching coach and, the team hopes, renewed optimism.

Jack McKeon was successful in his first game as Marlins manager Sunday, as Florida upended the Rockies, 7-2, at Pro Player Stadium.

McKeon, who replaced Jeff Torborg, was introduced before Sunday's game. Wayne Rosenthal takes over as pitching coach for Brad Arnsberg.

Rosenthal had been the organization's minor league pitching coordinator. He is familiar with several young Marlins pitchers, including left-hander Tommy Phelps, who will make his first Major League start Monday against the Padres.

Marlins catcher Mike Redmond said the team must remain focused.

"We're all professional," Redmond said. "When the game starts, we try to compete and win. As soon as the game starts, we are all about business."

McKeon is stressing keeping things simple while having some fun.

"He's pretty simple," Redmond said of the 72-year-old manager. "Play hard and have some fun. That's what we are all trying to do out there."

The Marlins went 2-4 at home. Their 12-game roadtrip goes from San Diego to Los Angeles to Montreal and Cincinnati.

Pitching matchup:

  • FLA: LHP Tommy Phelps

  • 2003 record: 0-0, 1.54

  • Making debut vs. SD

  • SD: RHP Clay Condrey

  • 2003 record: 1-1, 8.36

  • Making debut vs. FLA

Player to watch:

Luis Castillo had the seventh four-hit game of his career. He could have set a personal high for hits in a game Sunday, but on his fifth at-bat, he flied out to left. Castillo belted his second home run, raising his average to .322.

Quotable:

"I'm not big on a 25-man team putting the blame on one person. I think we all share the blame. I don't think we were playing up to our capabilities, but it is hard to pinpoint why. Sure, we had some injuries, but the injuries had nothing to do with our offense. I take part of the blame. I think all of our guys take part of the blame. It's part of the business. It's the crazy part of the business, but it's part of the business." -- Mike Lowell on the Marlins replacing Torborg.

Lol, our previews are becoming longer than the actual game notes....

Here's some recent trends via sportsline.com:

Juan Pierre -- Has hit in 31 of his 39 games.

Luis Castillo -- Has hit in 20 of his last 22 games.

Pudge Rodriguez -- Batting .138 over his last 8 games.

Juan Encarnacion -- Has hit in 14 of 16 games on the road.

Mike Lowell -- Leads team with 10 home runs and 29 RBI.

Derrek Lee -- Batting .188 in last 10 games

Alex Gonzalez -- Tied for NL lead with .664 slugging percentage.

LF Todd Hollandsworth -- Batting .370 over last 10 games

BULLPEN

Looper -- 0.42 ERA at home since Aug. 31.

Spooneybarger -- Opposing hitters batting .308 against him.

Almanza -- Second in NL with 21 games pitched

Borland -- Inconsistent in four appearances since being called up last week.

Levrault -- 1.50 ERA over two appearances.

Some of those trends seem a little old. Levrault has pitched in 5 games and now has a 1.08 ERA. Borland has pitched in 6 games and has hardly been inconsistent. In 5 of his outings, hes hasnt given up a hit or a run. His ERA is 2.08. Have you noticed that no one complains about the bullpen anymore since Nunez and Neal were sent down and Borland and Levrault were called up? Yet it seems like when our pitching gets better, our offense gets worse.

Hmmm, yeah you're right Ross. Guess they only update it once a week or something.

It's true, since Neal & Nunez went down and this new crop of guys came up, things have been very quiet, which is what you want out of your bullpen. I hadn't even heard Levrault's name before he was called up.

Hey, I got a question. Isn't Phelps a reliever...? Even in the minors didn't he relieve? It may sound dumb but I acually don't know...

  • Author

Phelps is a reliever....

in AAA this year in 5 games he didnt start any of them

  • Author

i dont see what the problem is.....
