Beinfest4Prez
either C or D occurs. bank on it. I was thinking closer to C or B. Sad as it is, some Canadian hockey teams will go in the event of a massive lockout. Teams that will most likely to go or move: Calgary Flames Carolina Hurricanes Pittsburgh Penguins Teams that may move or fold: LA Kings Edmonton Oilers Atlanta Thrashers Nashville Predators Tampa Bay Lightning/Florida Panthers (Though both financially are safe and the Lightning are finally drawing well) After those teams its anyones guess. rferry
I hope tey are replaced by the National Lacrosse League. Oh wait, the NLL followed the NHL's failed marketing model and is on the brink of extinction as well.
JMLinkinPark
I think most would agree that AT a Hockey Game, the NHL is one of the best to watch. But not many like to watch a game on TV (I only watch durin the stanley cup and some Panther Games)
Buckeye
Myself and Hugg were discussing this... A possible two league system is what I see, an American one and a Canadian one. They will not play each other. Also, I say we get rid of the teams not making money. Sorry for your luck, but if they can draw well in Pheonix and Dallas and not in Calgary or Carolina, that's tough. See ya'. The best part about the American league is the face of the NHL wouldn't change that much. We have too much money to worry about not getting most of the really good players. Plus the Blue Jackets draw well. BOOM! Cut the slack and get rid of the teams not drawing. And, by the way, you forgot Pittsburgh, they're one of the worst franchises in the league right now, if not THE worst.
Beinfest4Prez
Oops I forgot, can you say Winnipeg Penguins?
CapeFish
I don't think any teams will fold because there are markets like Kansas City, Houston, Portland and Seattle which would like teams and have been denied. Winnipeg and Hartford both formally had teams and are looking to lure a team back to their market. The demand is there, and if all is true about these markets being so bad, so is the supply. Kansas City had the Chiefs and they left them out to die. Houston had Gordie Howe and Co. Portland has the WHL and the Seattle Metropolitans folded decades ago. That being said they would love NHL teams there...
Rune
I hope it dies or gets close to it, not because I despise Hockey but just so The NBA can see where it's going if they continue at their pace. The NHL is not developing new stars and then spreading out the already existing ones into obscure cities and then surrounding them with an ever changing lineup of minor leaguers. The only way they can survive is with 16 teams or fewer and actually stop the back and forth movement of players either to the minors or through trades. Yes, that's whats needed. Spread out the already short supply of names and then surround those players with kids who are here today gone tomorrow. The stars are there though, they're just marketing them enough. Illya Kovalchuk, Dany Heatly, Luongo, Rick Nash, Zetterberg up in Detroit, DiPietro, Horton, there's some good kids in Nashville, Gaborik in Minnesota etc. etc. etc. There's tons of good young talent in the league, they just don't build them up. Luckily, the Blue Jackets seem to get this. Their whole marketing campaign is built around Nash, Nikolai Zherdev, and Rostislav Klesla, all under 23 years old, and Pascal Leclaire will join the crew soon enough. It's working too, we're terrible for the most part, but we still draw well and our local TV ratings are near the top of the NHL. Nash and Kovalchuk are tied for the NHL lead in goals. Nash is 19, Kovalchuk can't be older than 24, yet you wouldn't know they were doing this if you don't follow the league relatively closely. They should be hyping this. Shaq-Man
it's gonna be dead soon unless they wise up and do something about parity (how bout a salary cap?).
Rune
it's gonna be dead soon unless they wise up and do something about parity (how bout a salary cap?). Is that your answer for everything? Hockey was doing fine a few years back when their was no cap and FA was a big deal. Putting a cap is not going to solve anything unless they find a way to develop new big name stars.
