March 9, 200422 yr ...as a Sports Reporter at the Boca Raton News. I'm hoping to have an interview within the next few days, as I have already submitted a resume and writing samples. I'll hear from them tomorrow afternoon, so wish me luck! This is a huge opprotunity for me to gain major experience as a REAL journalist. And considering I've never had a job interview before, can anyone help me out with some tips so I don't look like a fool...?
March 9, 200422 yr Author Good Luck. What is Boca Raton News? Is that a station in FL? Daily local newspaper.
March 9, 200422 yr I'm not sure what to tell you, since I've never worked in the journalism area. But I will tell you this: drop the attitude. Not saying it's something you have to drop completely, but your co-workers will not want any business of dealing with a kid who thinks he is all that just because he is working at 14. It will close more doors than it will open. Another thing, don't bring up money issues. Money will come after a while, and at 14, anything is good, especially considering they might pay you under the table. Good luck man. You'll enjoy it.
March 9, 200422 yr can anyone help me out with some tips so I don't look like a fool...? wear a bow tie
March 9, 200422 yr in all honesty, you are 14.... its gonna look hard not to be a fool it will be expected of you luck, good
March 9, 200422 yr Hey WC, First off best of luck man! Believe it or not I actually had to interview to get promoted to campaign manager in 3 counties for Edwards. If I were 18, it would be a paying position, but evidently they can't pay minors. I got the position as campaign manager in Chippewa, Eau Claire, & Dunn Counties. But just be yourself is what I learned in my interview, thats the first thing they told me. Be yourself, back up all opinion with provable facts, be honest, leave no stone unturned. Make as shining a resume' as you can for a 14 year old. I didn't have much of a resume' except I campaigned for Edwards since December, and they had people examine me and how I campaigned, but obviously I doubt they'll do that to you. In short, good luck, I know you want to enter journalism as much as I would like to enter politics. Best wishes old friend.
March 9, 200422 yr i wear bowties...therefore they must be cool...come Magnolia Ball time, I'll be rockin out with seersucker pants (blue striped), white button down, blue/red bowtie (real bowtie...one you tie yourself), and blue sports coat. I will rock their faces off. Almost bought a 180 dollar seersucker suit by Brooks Brothers. Didn't have time to try it on though.
March 9, 200422 yr newspapers hiring minors? s*** i'm gonna go apply at sun-setinel anyways, good luck
March 9, 200422 yr ask your folks if they have any adult friends who wouldn't mind giving you a mock interview. that'll probably help you the most. dress up, try to look as grownup as possible, shake hands when you walk in, maintain good posture, maintain eye contact, cut out the 'um's, and all that other generic stuff that kids have trouble with. since you're interviewing to be a sports reporter, there's a good chance they might "quiz" you on sports. know every superbowl winner for the past 5 years, and know all the major recent NHL, MLB, NBA, NCAAFB, NCAABB, horse racing, auto racing, tennis, and golf champions. good luck, dude.
March 10, 200422 yr Author Update: They called/e-mailed me back and want two more writing samples. Good sign!
March 12, 200422 yr Author UPDATE: They liked what the saw - or read anyway. I have recieved two official assignments (tryouts) to see how I can work with a deadline. My first assignment: to attend the United States vs Haiti soccer game at the Orange Bowl and write a story on the game - due later that night - and to see how some Haitians feel about soccer during the turmoil currently occuring in their homeland. THAT will appear in the Sunday version of the Boca News as the sports feature (if you're in Boca, pick it up!). The second is a "gamer," a report on any local high-school baseball team (since they have yet to do Boca High, I will be covering a BH game). Guys, wish me luck. BTW: Can anyone give me any info on this upcoming USA vs Haiti game or can anyone give me a link to where I can find info on any of the teams?
March 12, 200422 yr Author Update: Scratch the Haiti game, I have been assigned another feature, but I won't find out what it is for a few days.
March 17, 200422 yr Author ****UPDATE**** I did my first story for the boca News last night, and it printed today. It was on the front page of the sports section. 'Bobcat Constellation' streaks to seventh straight win
March 17, 200422 yr Just talk about how much you hate the yankees. that's a major plus in the fair and balanced sports journalism world.
March 23, 200422 yr Author UPDATE: After an extremely succesful first story, I have been assigned two more. The first is a gamer on the American Heritage @ Pope John Paul II game tomorrow. No big deal. The second is a huge deal. A gamer: Florida Atlantic University VS Ohio State University. I get to go into the stadium press box and onto the field and into the clubhouse of a ranked division I-A baseball team.
March 23, 200422 yr awesome dude ... congrats ... tahts gotta feel pretty good if you ever need any help with soccer let me know, im really good with taht stuff
March 25, 200422 yr Author UPDATE: I just finished my story on the FAU vs OSU game. Wow it was an amazing game and an amazing experience. The FAU Manager Kevin Cooney, a great guy and always quote worthy, asked me if I was even old enough to drive. I said no, and he said to nobody in particular, "Hey guys, ever been interviewed by someone who doesnt have a drivers license?" He was joking, very nice guy to meet.
March 25, 200422 yr Author Here are my last two articles for the Boca News if anyone is interested. Blue Wave 'proving they can win close games' Stallions 'a bunch of scrappy guys that win'
March 26, 200422 yr Author ****UPDATE**** BREAKING NEWS: I just got the job. I'm going to be a "stringer" and get paid by the story, usually about three to five stories a week, $40 a story.
