I hate to say this, and I really hope I'm wrong because I'm a die hard long time Fish fan. But I think this team will be under .500 pretty soon. And could very well stay under .500. By my count Redmond's "managing" has cost the team 5-6 wins so far this year. A team like this can't just keep giving away games; a team like this has to go all out and scrap to win every game it can. Redmond should be managing every game like he's in a 5 game playoff series. Instead he's been managing like his team is 15 games out in late September.

For the record, I am not a total Redmond hater; I think he's well liked by his players and he is probably a good motivator. And when he has made good moves I am the first to praise him, such as when he let Cishek get those 4 out saves. I like the fact that he will sometimes do the opposite of what The Book says, unlike Fredi Gonzalez, who used to drive me nuts with his boring unimaginative managerial style. But some of his moves this year have been horrendous; by my count about 6 games have been lost this year because of them. Not pinch hitting for Jones and Mathis last night was one. Passing over good relievers in favor of bums like Marmol has cost a few others. I keep hoping he will learn from his mistakes and get better...

I have a hard time praising the Front Office for anything. Too many disappointments over the years; I'm still sore over the 2008 & 2009 seasons when the team was in contention yet they did absolutely zero at the Trade Deadline. Now it looks like the Front Office is serious about trying to contend this year, seeing as nobody is running away with the Division or the Wild Cards. Yet I can't help but wonder if this is just a devious Loria/Samson game where the Front Office acts like they are really trying to contend while Redmond calmly sabotages everything. Redmond has not managed this team like he's in a playoff race; he has managed as if he's 15 games out in late September. Sometimes I feel that he's been told "just don't lose 100 games again and your job is safe, but don't actually contend either or we will have to spend money at the Trade Deadline". There is no question that these are good moves, but they should have been made a while ago. And they will all go for naught if Redmond keeps making questionable bullpen moves (Jennings and his "Dunner" are garbage) and refuses to pinch hit or pinch run when necessary or make late inning defensive changes. Redmond can ruin all these good moves all by himself. If the team finishes at .500 he will be hailed as a great manager just because the Fish were so bad last year.

Damn! When I saw that 1929 in your handle, SilverBullett, I was hoping someone here was actually older than me, LOL. Man, I'm still in the dumps over yesterday's game. I can't stand watching Redmond's post game post mortems where he actually smiles and makes jokes after losses like this. Red's bullpen management has been horrific all year long. He apparently never heard of the concept of late inning defensive replacements. And he is stubborn to a fault. He left Jones in there to face the lefty to prove to everyone that he knows better than all those who maintain that Jones only hit against right hand pitching. And his loyalty to his players is great; except when it hurts the team, such as his stubborn refusal to pinch hit for Mathis late in games. I hated Fredi Gonzalez because he was so maddeningly by the book; the most orthodox manager I have ever seen, no imagination. Now we have the opposite: a manager who just ignores the book completely. I spent 4 hours last night watching that disaster, only to be disappointed at the end.

Thank God I have found a place with some sane people who also see Redmond for what he is: a terrible manager! Maybe players like him, and maybe he is a good motivator, but when it comes to game management he is just lousy, no other way to say it. By my count he has lost six games this year with his lousy moves. I watch these games & I often wonder is he actually trying to lose this game? For example, tonight. 7th inning bases loaded 1 out. Jones is up so Cubs bring in a lefty. Redmond lets Jones (batting .190 against lefties) hit instead of pinch hitting for him. Unbelievable. 10th inning, Marlins batting, two outs runners on 1st and 2nd. Redmond lets weak hitting Mathis bat. But he does have Reed Johnson on deck! Why? If Mathis gets a hit, no need for Reed! Reed should have been hitting for Mathis, not standing on deck. Then he brings in Jennings, who is horrible. He tries to lose it, but fails. So he brings in Turner who finally succeeds in blowing the game. Redmond does not want to win; he is content just not losing 100 games.
