    GBuy

by reading the article it appears Google has a bigger plan that really makes sense for people like me that loves Google products. Don't forget about Writley Google Spreadsheets, and Page Creator. GBuy may become part of a plan to create a single user identification/password system to simplify how Google authenticates users as they move from service to service, he said. I noticed this was happening a few months ago. Now when you sign in its for all of their products. Before, you needed a separate password and username for any product they had.
  6. awesome pics miri, im so jealous that you get to go to the games and im stuck in massachusetts listening on xm mlb.tv is the way to go!
  7. Matt LaChappa hasn't thrown a pitch professionally in 10 years. He is confined to a wheelchair, and constrained by the physical fallout from back-to-back heart attacks. Yet the Padres continue to pay him as if he were an active player. It might be the noblest thing they do. Matt LaChappa gets a warm welcome hug from his former El Capitan school coach, Steve Vickery in May 2001 when the high school baseball team retired his number. ?When he became a six-year free agent, I just renewed him for six more years,? said Priscilla Oppenheimer, the Padres' director of minor league operations. ?Nobody's said that I shouldn't, so I keep doing it. To me, it was the right thing to do. If they gave me any static about it, I would have taken it.? The baseball salary LaChappa draws is relatively insignificant ? even by the Friars' modest standards ? but the gesture is absolutely grand. It helps the disabled pitcher retain his insurance coverage and fulfills a promise Oppenheimer made when the Padres picked the El Capitan lefty with their No. 2 selection in the 1993 June draft. ?When he was drafted and he came into the office to sign, I've never seen such a troop of tribal people,? Oppenheimer said. ?I think he was the first full-blooded American Indian ever drafted.? Oppenheimer assured LaChappa's parents then that they needn't worry about their teenage son because, ?I'll take care of him.? Three years later, when LaChappa was stricken in the bullpen in Rancho Cucamonga, Oppenheimer proved even better than her word. Narrowly interpreting a vague promise by then-CEO Admin Lucchino that LaChappa would ?always be a Padre,? Oppenheimer kept the young player on the club payroll and placed pictures of him on her desk. ?He's my hero,? she said yesterday. ?He was always up. He had a good personality, a good sense of humor. He was cheerful. It made you feel good to be around him. ?I try to go out to see him every month. Even though I do most of the talking, he's very strong in his upper body. If you get a chance to give him a hug, be prepared to fight for breath.? LaChappa turns 31 on Thursday. Friday, the seventh annual Matt LaChappa Golf Tournament will be staged at Barona Creek Golf Club to raise scholarship money for college-bound San Diego athletes. To date, roughly 120 students have received grants totaling close to a quarter of a million dollars. For Matt LaChappa, charity has become a two-way street. ?When Matt was in high school and going to try out (for baseball), we had to budget real good to get cleats and a mitt,? said his mother, Linda LaChappa. ?There are kids out there with talent. If we could help them with college and stuff, we wanted to do it. ?When we started, we thought if it only lasted one year, we'd be successful. But our sponsors have helped us every year. They just continue to support Matthew.? No one is forgotten faster than the former athlete who never made it to the big time. Yet LaChappa's dreams were dashed so dramatically and so abruptly that his legacy has outlived his brief career. His uniform number has been retired at both El Capitan High and Rancho Cucamonga. Oppenheimer said the Padres are considering naming a minor league award in LaChappa's honor. ?He could have been a No. 2 or 3 starter in the big leagues,? said Reggie Waller, the former Padres' scouting director. ?His fastball could occasionally touch 90 (mph) and he had two curveballs. One of them was just an absolutely major league power curve ball.? LaChappa won 11 games as a starter in Rancho Cucamonga in 1995, compensating for erratic control with a lethal pickoff move. ?He would mesmerize guys,? Waller said. ?They'd look and next thing they were out.? It happens that quickly sometimes. One moment, you're teeming with opportunity. Then, suddenly, it's all gone, and irretrievable. For LaChappa, the transition was but a twinkling. He was warming up for an April relief appearance against the San Bernardino Stampede when he clutched his chest and collapsed in the bullpen. Derrek Lee, the Padres' No. 1 choice in 1993, would go on to win a World Series, play in an All-Star Game and sign a $65 million contract with the Chicago Cubs. LaChappa, meanwhile, went on to round-the-clock care. ?Matthew is doing fantastic,? said his older brother, Eagle. ?He actually participates in everything his family does. He attends church, goes to dinner, goes to the movies. ?He's still the same person that he was before. Nothing ? no matter what happened to him ? could get him down. He's always been a fighter.? So, too, is Priscilla Oppenheimer where Matt LaChappa is concerned. ?I always buy a foursome in his golf tournament,? she said. ?Somebody gave me a little grief about that in a finance meeting, and I had to use some not-so-nice words. But other than that, no one's ever said anything. ?The sad thing is most people don't remember who he is now. Most of the staff never dealt with him, so they don't know.? That's a shame, for this is a story that does the Padres proud.

    GBuy

    GBuy

I looked around, didn't see it anywhere so here goes: Google Online Payment System To Take On PayPal Google Inc. is expected to unveil on Wednesday an online payment system called GBuy, which analysts say will allow merchants to accept payment for services and could become a broad-based alternative to eBay's PayPal, the dominant system. Analyst Danny Sullivan, editor of SearchEngineWatch.com, said he expected Google to make the announcement on Wednesday and to target online merchants rather than consumer-to-consumer payments, which is PayPal's traditional strength. Google is targeting sites that may not be able to take credit cards, which is a common problem in international markets, he said. "It may be something that large businesses internationally who do not really have a way to handle online payments from customers might want to use," Sullivan said. Shares of eBay fell almost 5 percent to $28.25 on Tuesday on media and analyst reports of GBuy and lingering worries that growth at eBay is slowing. Google's shares fell $1.90 to $402.3. "We highlight that Google has yet to launch its own e-commerce and payment efforts, which represent major competitive challenges to eBay's historical dominance," Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel said in client a note. GOOGLE PAYMENTS RBC Capital analyst Jordan Rohan had predicted that Google would introduce the system -- formerly code-named Google Wallet -- as early as this week. "GBuy is focused on consumer-to-merchant transactions, but there is no reason why it eventually could not be expanded to consumer-to-consumer," he wrote in a June 9 note to clients. Google executives confirmed they are developing an online payment system but say it is not meant to compete directly with PayPal, which gives consumers ways instantly to wire money from bank accounts or credit cards via e-mail to merchants or other consumers. "Billing and payments have historically been a part of Google's advertising programs and online services," Megan Lamb, a company spokeswoman, said in a statement that acknowledged existing activities but declined to confirm its further plans. "We offer users the ability to buy items on Google Base and at the Google Store as well as pay for services like Google AdWords, Google Video and Google Earth," she said. Rohan said the service will be free during a trial period, then it will begin charging a rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent on payments, which is equal to or slightly below the rates charged by PayPal. GBuy may become part of a plan to create a single user identification/password system to simplify how Google authenticates users as they move from service to service, he said. The system will appear on Google search results pages by designating a merchant accepting payments as a "trusted GBuy merchant." Beyond the basic utility of a click-to-pay system, GBuy promises to help Google to monitor the transaction data flowing through the system, which Rohan said could allow the Web search leader to track which search results turn into paid sales. "If harnessed, the precision of this targeting could be revolutionary," Rohan said. Aware of the threat, PayPal has been moving aggressively to expand the number of ways customers can use its payment services. It now offers PayPal-branded credit cards tied to its online service. It expects to double the number of countries this year where it conducts services to around 100. Dana Stadler, PayPal's vice president of North America operations, said in a recent interview that two-thirds of PayPal purchasing volume takes place through eBay sites, and one-third away from eBay on other sites that link to PayPal. Roughly 12 percent of e-commerce transactions in the United States last year were paid for using PayPal. PayPal boasts 100 million users worldwide and is expected to handle more than $30 billion in gross payment volume over the next year, he said. Last month, eBay announced a wide-ranging U.S. partnership with Google rival Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) to embed PayPal payment services across Yahoo's network of sites. "PayPal is going to be deeply integrated into Yahoo," Stadler said. "This is not a lightweight partnership."
  11. after St. Anger they really need to impress me to move up on my list of great bands again. I always will love Metallica but I'll put it like this....I have probably listened to all of their albums at least 100 times each, more so the early stuff, St. Anger on the other hand I listened to maybe 5 times. It hurts my ears. Here's to a great comback! :cheers :rock

What about Dutch Daulton in 1997? another great one. His could have attributed more to the clubhouse presence....now he's just a fruitcake. Boone is another great example. the Yanks were already heading to the playoffs, but the impact he had IN that playoff game warrants a mention.

Dont know if ya consider this a big one.. Admin Walker to Cardinals.. in 2004.. he was aight with us when healthy! absolutley. I guess to clarify, it doesn't have to be a huge name(even though Walker was) just someone that attributed to the team making a huge push after the aquisition.

Off the top of my head... Carlos Beltr?n to the Astros in '04; Conine and Urbina to the Fish in '03. excellent. I was thinking Beltran myself, can't believe I forgot about Conine and Urbina
  16. You know you are obsessed when........ You turn the TV off when your team makes 3 (really 4) errors in the first inning because you cant bear to watch your team play that way..... you weren't the only one. (geemoney @ Jun 21 2006, 10:10 PM) * .....every few years you stop talking to all your old friends and get new, younger friends. that right there is a MB.com hall of fame reply.

    Trade Impact

After replying to a post about Loria possibly upgrading if we are in in the playoff race, it made me wonder how many trades have had a major impact on a teams push to the playoffs. I know clubhouse presence is big, but this question is purely on stats after the trade( players personal play, teams record, did they make the playoffs). I'll look around and see some in season moves of contending teams over the last 5 or so years and post my results....hope someone else does as well.
  18. I'd rather take any money we would be paying for an "upgrade" and give it to Train and Cabs instead of seeing them go bye bye for more pitching prospects after the season. One or two guys really won't make a difference and the aftermath of any deal could be devistating to the growth of this team. But that's just me.
  19. a little off the subject of AOL(which I haven't used since 1996 as a pay service). but an example, IMO, of great customer service is verizon wireless. I get through to them quickly whenever I have a question and without any bullcrap, I get my answer. They ask me if I need anything else and thank me for my call and I'm off within minutes of the initial dialing. The point about great customer service means a well off company is true. In my mind, I'll be with this company for a very long time.
  20. 7/9 correct. I missed the name of the storm that killed 11000 people in Central America and the first year guys names were used to name storms.
