Irate mother charged after son found with pot
By TOM TREWEEK/OBSERVER STAFF REPORTER
Probably South Park's Councilor Mackey said it best.
"Drugs, drugs are bad, m'kay."
While the vast majority of drug use instances are seen by society as negative, once in a while, however, a little marijuana may be a positive.
A Mountain View Middle School student is now living with his grandparents after his mother told a school resource officer that she would "beat the s--- out of him," all because he was caught with a little pot.
Department of Public Safety officer Adam Crosby was called to the principal's office after a 13-year-old male student was found to have marijuana at the school, but that was only the beginning.
After the student's mother, Penelope Riedl, was called to come pick up her son, the student, who was emotional and crying, told Crosby that his mother would "beat the hell out of me," according to the report.
MVMS principal Kathy Pinkel reportedly told the officer that Riedl has a "history of becoming irate and violent with the school staff."
Crosby's report indicated that Riedl was angry when she entered his office.
According to the report, when Riedl was confronted with her son's incident, she "became emotional and her eyes began to water." She told the officer that this was a "very serious issue" and then told the officer, "I am going to beat the s--- out of him," according to the incident report.
Crosby then reported that, after he informed Riedl that he would not let the boy go with her if she was going to beat him, she told the officer she was going to whip him with a belt.
Riedl later said the report was misleading, insisting that she, instead, was merely echoing the words of the officer, not threatening her son.
Riedl said she did not abuse her son but did use corporal punishment, adding that she did not leave marks.
According to the report, Riedl then went to the office in which her son was waiting and tried to go into the door, which was locked. Crosby reported that he told her three times to leave the school before placing her in handcuffs, which was also a struggle.
"The entire time, she was yelling at me while she was being handcuffed," Crosby said.
Riedl insisted she was only telling her son that everything would be all right before she left.
Crosby took her into a conference room in order to get her driver's license to identify her through dispatch, but Riedl's behavior reportedly did not change.
"The entire time, the defendant was rude, argumentative and belligerent," Crosby wrote in his report. "After a few minutes, the defendant's behavior escalated to the point where she was disrupting the entire administrative office and other people began to gather."
Crosby reported that Riedl was also uncooperative while she was being led to his police vehicle.
Rio Rancho Public Schools spokesperson Kim Vesely said she could not comment on the incident.
Riedl said she is considering a lawsuit against the department. She said she was not read her Miranda Rights, was denied a phone call, and was pushed to the floor by Crosby.
DPS spokesman John Francis said that Miranda Rights apply only to questioning of suspects and did not apply to this case. Riedl was arrested on Crosby's observations. She also was not given a phone call because she was not held in jail, Francis said. She posted $500 bond and was released.
There is an audio recording of the incident - the officer wore a recorder on his belt - and Riedl hopes it shows more about the incident.
Riedl's son, whose name is being withheld because he has not yet been charged, was turned over to the New Mexico Children Youth and Families Department, which gave him to his grandparents. Juvenile Probation and Parole will decide whether charges will be filed against the teen.
In other police news, windows were broken out of 12 homes, which were under construction, in a development near US 550 and Chayote Road, Francis said.
In a few instances, holes were also kicked in the walls, he said.
DPS currently has no suspects.
I know the cop at the school because my younger brother goes there. He is a NUT. I can't stand him. If I ever got called into school because my kid got caught with pot on him/her I would beat the s**t out of the kid. Since when are parents not allowed to hit their kids with a belt? My dad use to whoop my a$$ with a belt when I did something I shouldn't have and I'm sure alot of people if not everyone has been whipped with a belt.
Also, if she was not given a phone call because she was not taken to jail, where did they take her? Did they just leave her in the back of the cop car?
The school and the Rio Rancho police department are jokes
