Statistically, the only one of those three pitchers that is better than Suppan is Escobar, and he most likely isn't going anywhere. I agree that offense isn't the way you guys should be heading adding Castillo. But tey obvously know they have enough offense that they can trade Drew for pitching and atill be well off. Suppan could very well be the best and most available pitcher ont he market... There has been a rumor that Escobar would head to St. Louis in a 3 way deal with Oakland for Drew. I like Escobar and Suppan both, but I'd prefer Ponson and Garcia. There is also a rumor that the Cards would trade Drew for Garcia and Winn. The Cards offense will be fine without Drew, but I still think he's worth more than a few months rental of Suppan.

But truthfully, I think the Cards should be sellers at this point, not buyers UNLESS they improve their starting rotation. Also, they havent made any significant strides to show they are contenders at this point. I agree that they need to improve their starting pitching, but that's what this trade would do. The Cards are only 3 games out in the NL Central.

The Cards can never afford it every year... Translation: We have money stashed in a safe below the stadium for our annual mid-season trade. Suppan is pitching beautifully for Pitt, and not just speaking on yesterdays oerformance when he mowed down, oh yea, the Cardinals. I would welcome him with open arms. I have nothing against Suppan, and I would love to see the Cards aquire him, but I think that Drew is too much to give up for him. As for Castillo, I would love to see him as a Cardinal, but the Cards should spend all of their available cash on pitching, and not on offense unless we get a replacement for Drew in the deal. I guess the reason I dislike this deal is because there have been rumors that the Cards could get Escobar, Ponson, and Garcia for Drew. I would probably prefer any those guys over Suppan. Once again, I'd love to get Suppan for Prospects, but not straight up for Drew.

2:1 odds say Drew only plays 1/2 of the games for his new team HE IS MADE OF GLASS I can't argue with that.

As a Cardinal fan... I don't like either deal. I'd rather keep Drew if Suppan is the best that we can get for him. As for the Castillo deal... the Cards can't afford him, and would be better off keeping a cheaper Hart. The Cards need Starting Pitching, and not an upgrade at 2B.

What happened to Wayne? He didn't get an out?

I'm going with 5-1 Astros. I'd love to see the fish win this one, but it's doubtful with Redding on the mound. BTW... the Astros fans I've talked with have said that Redding was supposed to be better than Oswalt. He has some nasty stuff, and just needed to get his head on straight. It looks like he has his head on straight this year.

thanks for your input MattyMo...you obviously know more about the Astros being that you play them 19 times a year No prob Ramp... I watch the Astros more closely than any other division rival. They are playing really bad baseball right now. Their bats have been silent, and their starters are weak, but their bullpen is one of the toughest. The rookie Brad Lidge is probably their most dangerous reliever (including Dotel and Wagner). Here's hoping the Marlins do what the Braves just did, and SWEEP the Mighty Strohs. Anyone up for a 20 Inning Marathon?

IMO the Marlins have a better chance against Oswalt than Redding. Oswalt has been inconsistant this year, but Redding has been lights out. With Oswalt and Miller having problems... Redding has been the Astros best starter so far this year.

Jamey has never had a good pitching coach. Jamey had a great pitching coach for a couple of months last season when he was with the Cardinals. I don't think Wright is coachable.

I posted this question in the Redman thread, but this thread seems like an appropriate place as well. Does anybody think the Marlins would be interested in trading a reliever for Garrett Stephenson, and if so... for what reliever? The Cardinals need help in the pen, and Garrett may become expendable if Finley is signed. I'm sure the Cards would prefer to keep Garrett, and trade Simontacchi, but Garrett is sure to have more trade value than Simo would. I wouldn't be surprised to see Garrett traded, and the Marlins seem like as good as place as any. What do you think?

Geee... the Marlins seem to be having the starting pitching problems that the Cards suffered last year. Some of us over at the Cards forum have been discussing a possible trade with the Marlins... I'm curious what you guys think about it. It appears that the Cards MAY be close to signing Chuck Finley. If that happens... a spot would be needed in the rotation, and cash would need to be made available. One possibility is trading Garrett Stephenson for a reliever. Garrett only makes around $900,000, but he is a good pitcher. Do you think the Marlins would be interested, and for what reliever?

you know what, it's worth a risk... we could always release him you know... He'll probably sign a minor league deal. There's not much risk there.

No, Hamey Wright is a very talented veteran who could do very well here, and he'll also help the youngsters... He's so talented that no Major League team will sign him even for the minimum.

who cut him? i dont think he was a cardinal anymore.... last i heard was i think seattle. Jamey Wright signed with the Mariners, but was cut at the end of ST. The Brewers signed him to a minor league deal, and then demoted him to the pen on their triple A team. The Brewers released him from his minor league deal today since they had no interest in bringing him up. I really think he's done... he couldn't even make the Brewers staff.

Like I said the other day.... Finley is not leaving the west coast except for St. Louis. Money is not an issue. Next. Das Texan is right, Finley has made it clear that he wants to stay on the West Coast. He has said that he would return to St. Louis if it was an option, but that's it. Finley's first choice has always seemed to be the Angels. The Angels offered him a job in the pen, and he refused. Several teams including the Phillies and Mets reportedly made offers over the winter but were rejected. He would be a great addition to the Marlins young staff, but it's not going to happen. Finley seems content to retire, and be with his kids if he can't come back on his terms. Actually, Finley was quoted by a reporter last week, and said that he thinks he'll end up in St. Louis before the season is over. I'm just not sure that we can afford him.

I know how most of us are disappointed in TH's play this far. His numbers against G Stephenson are 5-8 (2 doubles). Let's get the win today! Shamrock, Are you aware of any other Marlins that have a lot of success against Garrett?

I'll admit I've been dreading this series knowing that Matt and Woody wouldn't be pitching. The Marlins young pitching and speed always scares me. Even though we're going against Burnett... tonights game may be our best shot at winning since Tomko is taking the mound. I have very little faith in Stephenson and Simontacchi as of right now.
