Rookie Miguel Cabrera had another big offensive game on Monday night, but it might not be enough to keep the Marlins from dealing for a big-name replacement.

According to major league sources, the Marlins are making a strong push for St. Louis Cardinals outfielder J.D. Drew. Talks have accelerated on a potential three-way deal that would send Pittsburgh right-hander Jeff Suppan to the Cardinals.

The rebuilding Pirates would get a package of prospects from the Marlins. Pirates General Manager Dave Littlefield knows the Marlins farm system well from his three seasons in their front office.

Drew, 27, is making $3.6 million this year and could see his salary rise into the $5.5 million range next winter through salary arbitration.

After a slow start due to knee problems, he is batting .296 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI in 199 at-bats.

The former Florida State All-American would fill the Marlins' need for a left-handed power bat in the middle of the order. A former No. 1 overall draft pick, Drew has had trouble staying healthy over the years.

His best season was 2001, when he hit .323 with 27 homers and 73 RBI in 375 at-bats. That season was interrupted by a broken hand, one of five trips to the disabled list in his career.

Suppan (10-7) threw a complete-game, seven-hit shutout Monday in St. Louis, piquing the Cardinals' interest.

Sources said the Marlins had soured on Pirates outfielder Reggie Sanders. Talks with San Diego for Rondell White remained in a holding pattern.

In his first at-bat Monday, Cabrera hit his sixth homer of the year, a 406-foot shot into the left-field pavilion.

The 20-year-old added an RBI double to give him three RBI on the night, but struck out in his final two at-bats.

thoughts?

I just posted another article from the Post on this subject, but a different base trade, that would send Bo Hart to Florida with Drew for Castillo and a pitcher.

I saw that on ESPN Boards... Its Interesting....

Well I wouldn't mind the Fish making this deal.

the Castillo deal would be okay for this team normally if they were out of the running (depending on what pitcher we'd send), but once again I hate to mess with a winning group....

the three way deal is interesting, wonder what prospects we'd send to Pittsburgh.

losing Castillo and a starting pitcher? If this happens, I quit being a Marlins fan...

ok maybe not. But I wont enjoy it.

Although Drew gets injured too much when he is healthy he is very dangerous. I've followed the Cardinals fairly closely for the past couple of years and if he is able to stay healthy he could be very good. That's a very interesting trade.

as i said in another thread f*** drew i want castillo!

Obviusly not the deal that Palm Beach post but Sun Sentinel.

KEEP CASTILLO

No castillo in this deal.

I heard rondelle white will be in florida in the next 48 hour!

I might like the 3 way trade one if depending on the prospects we send

If we give prospects for drew then do the trade,if we got to give away castillo then tell the cardinals g.m. f*** u!

The problem is that he does not stay healthy.

I'd hate to give up good chemistry on a gamble such as this. I'd pass on the Drew deal. Just too many questions on how often he could be in there.

IMO

What chemistry?Prospect?

The deal that has Castillo and starting pitcher going to Cardinals is not worth it but other deal involves prospect is great a deal.

the great thing here is that the Marlins don't HAVE to do anything.

this isn't like getting Urbina, where the team desperately needed a bullpen upgrade. The offense is doing it's job, and the left fielder looks pretty good at the moment.

True

Hello Brethren Marlins fans ,

First time poster long time reader . The only thing Marlins need is a legit Starting Pitcher , That would seal the deal with us clinching the wild card , Team Chemistry right now is amazing they would be fools to break up this happy family.

Clutch hitting from the bench , Clutch hitting from the Starters, not to mention great defense , People i will say this again all we need is a starting pitcher , that puts Pavano back in middle relief where he rocks and we got ourselves a Damn good shot . :thumbup

I heard rondelle white will be in florida in the next 48 hour!

most trades will be done in the next 48 hours

not really i think pavano will come thru the rest of the season.

the only "legit" starting pitchers out there who are a lot better than Pavano would probably cost us too much. There are a LOT of contending teams going after guys like Sidney Ponson. On top of that, if the team IS lucky enough to make the playoffs, the rotation shrinks anyway & we wouldn't need the 5th starter.

We have 3 top-notch pitchers and 2 who are decent. When your #5 starter still has a 4.45 ERA that's pretty good...

Welcome to the boards Marlinsrock. :thumbup

I read about this Drew deal too. I think this would be a very good deal for us, depending on what prospects the Pirates wanted.

The other thing I think we have to look at, and would make for a lively debate, is the possibilities with Encarnacion. Say we get Drew, Cabs goes down to AAA. Next season, you want to bring in Cabs - possibly as a starter - which means En is expendable. You could turn around and deal him (or lose him outright, I think he has a 1 year deal too...).

In fact, I would be curious to see us deal Encarnacion for Giles. There might be more needed from the Pirates, but putting Giles in RF and leaving Cabs in LF would be a strong upgrade too. Heck, you can even still deal for Drew in this 3 way deal and end up with Drew, Giles and Pierre in OF (2 lefty with power!) and still have Cabs in AAA! The Marlins have a lot of opportunity here...very interesting... :thumbup :w00t

in order to obtain Giles, we need to also trade for Kendall.... thanks but no thanks

JD Drew will make $4mil+ in arbitration next year, we may not even resign him anyway

Im not saying pavano isnt a good starter , what im tryin to say is that we need middle relief , Pavano is one hell of a good relief pitcher , im also saying they need to keep team integrity , you all know the term "if it aint broke dont fix it ".

Everyone knows that our relief situation is rough , its coming around with urbina , but it still needs help.

Also im wondering why marlin fans are pushing for Rondell White , i know he is a great player but my goodness let our wonderboy play . Cabbie has been rock solid adding a great bat to the tail end of our lineup .
