He was paid x million in 2012 because the money he's missing is spread out in 20?? And 20??. Aka, 2012 is X-y= salary. 2013 and beyond is X+y= salary. 2012 already happened. That does not even out. It just is what it is. It makes the first two years nice and the last two years terrible. This is the last offseason to try and trade him and get some value in return because his salary for '13 is still nice. Furthermore, the ultimate question is, can this team win this way? Buerhle's paid what he's paid because the market last offseason dictated what he will be paid. He is not overpaid, he is paid what the market determined he is worth. Hanley could be considered overpaid, he signed an extension prior to his free agency. The market never dictated his worth. For Buerhle to be overpaid, he would need to regress to the point where he is a consistant liability- much like Zito was and Pavano before him. Then you are not getting what you paid for, which is a sub 4 ERA innings eater with double digit wins each year. When he lasts 100 innings and has an era of 5 then you can argue he's overpaid. He's paid what he was determined to be worth in other words.

You don't have to be "elite" to be consistent, either. You can be consistently decent to good, as Buehrle's been his entire career. Yeah, the last two years of his contract pay him ace-like money, just like the last two years of Hanley's contract pays him near-MVP like money. Granted, Hanley was more MVP-like than Buehrle was ace-like during the contracts being signed, but Buehrle is still at the level he was before the contract and when the contract was signed, where-as Hanley has regressed terribly. And you're right, nobody said he's a bad pitcher, but nobody said ace, either. He said "dude is the most consistent starter in baseball." That's not me putting words in his mouth (or, in this case, text); that's exactly what he said. In order to be the most consistent starter in baseball, you have to be an ace. I don't know about you but when I think of THE MOST consistent starters in baseball, I think about Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw and pitchers of their caliber. Not Mark Buehrle. Also, the only thing that's consistent about Mark Buehrle is basically that he gives you 200+ innings every year. So it's basically durability and quantity. In terms of quality (which is what matters most), he's had some mediocre/bad years. He's not putting words in your mouth, but you are for him. Your misinterpreting his statement how you see fit. He's consistant. Just like someone can be consistently bad and consistently good. He's consistent, for the longest amount of time. Therefore, the most consistant.

I think Redmond could be solid but I really wanted Sandy Alomar Jr. Why? Like Redmond, he's a catcher who truly understands the game and has done his time coaching. He is also a gold glover and is very well respected, well spoken, and Hispanic which is always a plus in this market. Being Hispanic is only a plus for the ignorant racists in this market. A man should never be considered because of the color of his skin, and never excluded. If someone supports someone simply because his color and nationality they are small minded. That's the reason why I'm opposed to rules such as the Rooney Rule. It may help one guy get the interview, but does he really deserve it or is he becoming the token prize. The only difference between Redmond and Alomar is his skin color. Both are well respected and spoken highly of in professional circles.
