March 16, 200422 yr "I think walks are overrated unless you can run... If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time they're clogging up the bases for somebody who can run." --Dusty Baker, Cubs manager (Chicago Daily Herald) "Who's been the champions the last seven, eight years? ...Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks? Walks help. But you ain't going to walk across the plate. You're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from." --Baker "It's called hitting, and it ain't called walking. Do you ever see the top 10 walking? You see top 10 batting average. A lot of those top 10 do walk. But the name of the game is to hit." --Baker baseballprospectus.com

Clogging up the bases for the speed guys, it sucks.
March 16, 200422 yr Author way to tear down a rising star He is not ready to be a No. 1, Just because he is short and fast, that doesn't make you a No. 1. It takes years to learn to be a No. 1. He doesn't know what he's doing. He doesn't know how to take [pitches]. These are things you have to learn in the minors or earlier. If they wanted him to be a leadoff hitter, he should have been groomed to do this in the minors." --Dusty Baker, Cubs manager, on outfielder Corey Patterson (Chicago Sun-Times)
March 16, 200422 yr i wont forget his b***hing why Trelle was being being left off the team so he could bring his former player Ortiz to the AS game...
March 16, 200422 yr I never liked this guy, not in his San Fran days either I don't know, he just seems like a real ______?!? you can fill in the blank
March 16, 200422 yr What an idiot. All this guy knows how to do is accuse white people of not being to play in hot weather and abuse pitchers.
March 16, 200422 yr If I were a manager, I wouldn't care if someone hit .200 as long as their on base percentage is .400. I'll take that. I guess Dusty would rather have a bunch of Aramis Ramirez's.
March 16, 200422 yr The white man corrupts dusty's opinion on on base percentage? Maybe he listens to his son for pitching decisions! Dusty: what should I do? Son: Keep him in, keep him in! Dusty: Mark threw 135 pitches... Son: Keep him in! Dusty: Okay!
March 16, 200422 yr If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps. But the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time they're clogging up the bases for somebody who can run By this same logic a guy who hits a single and can't run is equally clogging up the bases. Dusty truly can't believe some of these dumb ass statements. "Who's been the champions the last seven, eight years? ...Have you ever heard the Yankees talk about on-base percentage and walks? Walks help. But you ain't going to walk across the plate. You're going to hit across the plate. That's the school I come from." Ya Dusty the Yankees don't talk about getting OBP and walking they just flat out do it...check the numbers.
March 16, 200422 yr :lol Wow what an idiot he cant be serious about what he says. I defintely wouldnt want a guy thinking like that being the manager of my team.
March 17, 200422 yr I never like Dusty Bakers. I even hate him more as the Cubs manager. He makes dumb excuses when the Cubs lose a game.
March 17, 200422 yr i find it very hard 2 believe someone would say those things....... AND IS A MAJOR LEAGUE MANAGER!!!!! thats something embarrasing coming from a little league coach, and im not exagerating
March 17, 200422 yr i find it very hard 2 believe someone would say those things....... AND IS A MAJOR LEAGUE MANAGER!!!!! thats something embarrasing coming from a little league coach, and im not exagerating Exactly. If I was hiring out a high school teacher or something to be a manager and he said that, I would say "Do you even WATCH baseball?"
March 18, 200422 yr Yankees: Champions of the payroll for the last 7,8 years So that's what he meant when he said champions!
March 18, 200422 yr Dusty Baker= moron If it wasn't for him the cubs would have won the NLCS, the Giants would have won the world series in 02, the nlds in 2000, and so on. He's an awful manager
