April 26, 200422 yr I think Valdez should be brought up. We need his speed and defense on the bench, and he was just going to become Gonzalez and Castillo's backup any way so no need to get him at bats in AAA. Re; Nunez/Conine Because Conine is a righty that basically means Nunez is the starter just like how Choi is considered the starter in the Choi/Cordero platoon. Nunez has proven nothing except that he can come to the plate to hack and strike out. Conine has shown too much commitment to the club and performed too well in the field and at the plate (see hits, and working the count) to be benched. Perhaps we haven't been watching the same Nunez this year. I'm not sure which Nunez you are talking about. The Abraham Nunez I have been watching is showing very good discipline at the plate. He has 5 hits in 14 ABs with 3 walks and 4 Ks. A .357 average. He has continued to improve with each game played. He needs to continue to get starts as he is progressing well. I agree with you that I would like to see Valdez called up....he could replace Harris on the roster. How many RBI's? Extra Base Hits? Runs Scored? Those are the stats I care about

And Castro can't get on base either. If you noticed, he bats 6 when he starts. So if he get's on base, he has Redmond/Castro, A-Gon, and the pitcher to drive him in. Don't blame the lack of RBI's and Runs on him when Castro, A-Gon, and the pitcher don't do crap (Except for Dontrelle) either. He doesn't get the chance.

LOL....I don't wanna ehar that BS, he has had chances to bat with people on base and he has not come thru in those situations. Most of his hits were lucky little groundball singles with 2 outs and no one on base. I am not downplaying a hit, I mean a hit is a hit. But honestly his stats are over blown, he has not come thru at the plate this year when we needed him to. HE HAS HAD CHANCES to drive in runs.

April 26, 200422 yr Author Nunez has had 5 Hits and 5 Total Bases.... with 4 Strikeouts... nothing to get excited about What the hell do you mean "nothing to get excited about?" When a guy does great in the minors, you want him on your team. When a guy does great in Spring Training, you want him on your team. So now that he's in the majors, he could finally prove himself. But he can't because he get's no playing time. Look at Cabrera, he got the chance to improve because he was our everyday LF. Some thing with Dontrelle. How do you think players improve? You have to play them to find out what they're all about. I'm glad your not a manager because you think that because Nunez doesn't come through a couple times he shouldn't be playing. What the f*** is that? That's ridiculous. Even the best players in the MLB aren't hitting 1.000 with 100 homers and 200 RBI's each year. You take what you can get. And we can get Nunez so why not start him? I'm sure Conine wouldn't mind getting some days off.

All I said was that he hasn't really proven himself yet, to merit a starting role over our current talent. McKeon is starting to give him a little more playing time and he is not taking advantage of it. Sooner or later he MUST or he will be gone. What you do in the Minor's or in ST means NOTHING if you can't do it at the Major league Level. Nunez has not proven he can YET, that's not to say he won't but you make him seem like he's done great things this year and he HASN'T.
April 26, 200422 yr Easley will probably get a start at SS at some point on the west coast road trip. Alex wasn't the reason the Marlins lost yesterday. He'll pick it up eventually. He'll never be a consistent hitter, but neither is he a .150 hitter. When Alex plays a full season his average has been at least .250. Here's a pretty telling stat though early on: When the first pitch is a strike, he's batting .091. When the first pitch is a ball, he's batting .250.

I am not saying he is a bust but by no means do you jeoperdize your ball club by starting him when we have proven talent to start in his place. If he was our ONLY option then fine, I could see your argument of letting him play giving him a chance to break out..... But he is not our only option and therefore will only get limited starts until he starts to prove otherwise. PERIOD!

That gives him an opportunity to start every once in a while. Not everyone will be like Cabrera. Cabs is real special. Nunez will get his chance next year to start. It will come assuming he doesn't play terrible in a bench role this year.

And he had a chance before? I don't call 17 AB's a chance. You act like he's been starting every day for a few years and is hitting terrible. THAT'S NOT THE CASE. We have a good player who is fast (Something we REALLY need), see's pitches, walks, and as we saw in Spring Training, can hit for some kind of power. I don't want him out there every day, but sitting him on the bench and giving him AB's in the pitchers spot every game isn't really giving him a chance. Let him hit 5 or 6 and start a couple game sin a row. That's what being given a chance is. Not pinch hitting when the game is out of reach.
April 26, 200422 yr I don't think you need to give him a week full of starts. Usually when managers try to test a player they will give him a few at bats, then a few starts per week then a platoon role. The latter two give about the same amount of playing time, but the platoon role allows the player to familiarize himself with a set role in the field and lineup. I think we're in step two (and if Nunez mouths off again or is a source of trouble in the clubhouse he'll take a step back or worse.)

"Nunez had his chance in the majors before and did nothing..." 17 at bats in 19 games in 2002. "First off, calm down, no need for profanity" This is the same guy who was telling people to "stick it up your arse" last week. In 17 at bats (including walks) in 2004 he's had four hits and three walks so he's reached base 7 out of 17 times, he's batting .357, his obp is .471 and his ops .828. Among position players only Mike Redmond has a higher average, he's showing a good eye at the plate. Who knows what may become of him but he certainly is doing as much as anyone could expect with the limited playing time he's seen. Uber, FM3, you can't argue with a zealot, especially one who never attends games and probably wouldn't know a baseball from a watermelon. It's fruitless. Zealots have all the answers. Facts are to be ignored if they don't fit the zealot's view of the world. If Nunez is lucky enough to play in Colorado and by chance hit's a home run you'll probably hear that it means nothing because of the altitude. Period.

If Nunez is lucky enough to play in Colorado and by chance hit's a home run you'll probably hear that it means nothing because of the altitude. Period. First off you misunderstood my post. My point was he had major league AB's before and didn't do much. He's had some this year and yea he has a high AVG. Props to him for getting on base. But in my opinion he still hasn't done much to merit a starting role. As far as the profanity thing, you took it a bit out of context, I did not think this discussion called for profanity that is why I said that. I am not trying to sound like an angel or anything, I get angry just like anyone elsewhen I am in the heat of an argument. This is not an argument or at least I did not take it as an argument. Anyhow all this is irrelevent to the matter at hand which is Nunez does not DESERVE a starting role on this ball club until he proves he can be productive. So his fans on this board are gonna have to live with him getting a start every 5 or 6 games, he has to take those oppurtunities and do soemthing with them to earn more playing time.
April 26, 200422 yr I really don't think Nunez will ever be more than a stop-gap starter for this club. Next year he'll likely push Conine into the role Cordero fills now. But Jeremy Hermida, Chris Aguila and others are too close to the bigs and have far more upside than Nunez. The only way I see Nunez keeping a spot in the 2006 starting lineup will be if Lowell or Pierre leaves.
April 26, 200422 yr Author I never even said Nunez should be an every day starter. Hell I don't even rememberhow this turned into an Abreham Nunez discussion when this is about Alex Gonzalez.
April 26, 200422 yr Alex Gonzalez WILL be replaced if this bad long slump continues. They are not going to come right out and say it but it will happen sooner or later. remember 97 when Castillo was the starting 2nd baseman? and at the begining they were saying as long as he plays great defense and if he wasn't hitting that it wasn't that big of a deal in that line up. not only was he great defensivly but he had great speed with the potential to steal 50 bases. and eventually he got sent down and replaced by Counsell who was inferior to Castillo defensivly and speed wise. and Counsell wasn't even a proven player, they just needed to get someone in the line up who could hit the ball. of course those are 2 diffrent situations, but my point is great defense will keep you in the line up for only so long. I think he will be replaced because this line up is weakened too much with him in there. and I like Alex, i don't think i couldve been more happy for another player if they had hit the game winning HR in Game 4 of the WS then i was for Alex, and i've been rooting for him to break out of his slump, i just don't see it happening for him unless he is benched for a significant amount of time or traded to another team. btw... i didn't know Alex was one of the main reasons Cabrera chose to sign with the Marlins instead of the Yankees and Dodgers who offered him more money. (heard that last night on espn)
