Team tries to find Noah's Ark

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An expedition is being planned for this summer to the upper reaches of Turkey's Mount Ararat where organizers hope to prove an object nestled amid the snow and ice is Noah's Ark.

A joint U.S.-Turkish team of 10 explorers plans to make the arduous trek up Turkey's tallest mountain, at 17,820 feet, from July 15 to August 15, subject to the approval of the Turkish government, said Daniel P. McGivern, president of Shamrock- The Trinity Corporation of Honolulu, Hawaii.

The goal: to enter what they believe to be a mammoth structure some 45 feet high, 75 feet wide and up to 450 feet long that was exposed in part by last summer's heat wave in Europe.

"We are not excavating it. We are not taking any artifacts. We're going to photograph it and, God willing, you're all going to see it," McGivern said.

Explorers have long searched for an ark on the high slopes of Mount Ararat, where the biblical account of the Great Flood places it.

In 1957, Turkish air force pilots spotted a boat-shaped formation in Agri province. The government did not pursue the sighting, however. The entire area, including Mount Ararat, was off limits to foreigners because of Soviet complaints that explorers were U.S. spies.

That ban was lifted in 1982, and since then teams of explorers have visited the area but have been unable to substantiate any claim of an ark.

McGivern and Ahmet Ali Arslan, a Turkish mountain climber who grew up in a town near Mount Ararat, say satellite photos have helped them pinpoint a more exact location. Arslan will be leading the expedition.

The biblical account in the Book of Genesis says that after the great deluge, the ark came to rest on the mountain with Noah's family and a cargo of male and female pairs of every kind of animal.

Geologists say even though there is evidence of a flood in Mesopotamia in Sumerian times, it is not possible for a ship to make landfall at an altitude as high as Mount Ararat.

I think this is hysterical. If Noah's Ark did indeed exist there is no way that it would last this long. Assuming it exists it had to be made of wood which would have rotted by now because I'm sure the area has not always been covered by ice.

How is this a joke? I hope they go up there and shut U all up. The temperature up there preserved the wood. It is rotted but not completely. I wish I was on this expedition. If they find the ark and they will, then U all are PWN3d.

And if they don't will you renounce your faith? Of course not. So why would it affect anyone who doesn't care about religion? I guess if your searching for something it could affect your decision.

And I'm not sure if this is correct but didn't the story of a great flood come from pagan tradition first and then The Jews added it to their religion?

I hope they find something up there.

That would definitely be 'interesting' and would make people wonder for damn sure.

Don't get me wrong, I would be excited(but skeptical) if they found the ark or remnants of it. However, the story of the ark is one of the most hard to believe stories in the bible. I am a firm believer that god exists and call myself a Christian but I do not take every word the bible says as the literal word of god. I find it hard to believe that Noah could get a boat big enough to put 2 of every animal on. The boat would have to be bigger than any boat that exists today that is for sure. And how come the animals didn't eat each other. The story of the ark just does not make logical sense to me so I don't believe it.

So U guys just don't believe in anything huh? What a way to live. Poor souls.

I favor the Eastern philosophies (ie: religion) myself and don't really buy into the Christian stuff as much (trust me, there's just as much ridiculous stuff in the Eastern religions, particularly since they're based on Hinduism, but you have the option of not believing in that stuff and still being a Buddhist).

I don't believe in the ark, personally. It insults my intelligence that all those animals were on the ark and just GOT ALONG. So, the mice didn't scare the elephants? The owls didn't eat the mice, etc., etc.?

There has never been any evidence of an ark and I don't believe there ever will be. I sagree with Texans post it WOULD be interesting, but it would cause more trouble than it's worth (just imagine the upraor when some other religious group firebombs the thing).

I dont know if this would be convincing to some people, but back in the 70s they foound fish skeletons on Mt Aarat, traditionally believed to be where Noah's Ark landed

Noah didn't need to put fish on board though. They could swim in the water right. yes, but fish wouldnt be on top of the mountain dood. (Oceans risen via the flood) :thumbup

What, you don't beleive in Zeus and Posiedon? You don't believe in mount olympus housing the gods? I feel SO SORRY for you.

There was no ark, it is a physical impossibility. eh, i wouldnt go so far as to say there WAS no Arc, it cant really be proven either way. Sure there are things about it that seem impossible, but people who believe it believe it was a divine work, therefore physical impossibility means very little to them. If you dont believe in it, fine. If you do believe in it, fine. Lets just not start the religious flame wars all over again.
