Any news on Samson's visit to Tallahassee?

Featured Replies

they probably slammed the door in samson's face and called the cops.

No news is good news I guess :mischief

I don't believe in that anymore. You know why. :confused

For some reason, I don't have a good feeling about this, but let's see what happens. I hope I am proven wrong.

Samson was last seen running east on I-10 with a mob from the capitol chasing after him with lit torches. Something about him getting on their nerves.

"They didnt start chasing us until you started playing that getaway music!"

I've spoken to midget before and he has told me that everything will be ok-ay :thumbup :thumbup

When did you talk to him?

Marlins executives and county officials were in Tallahassee on Wednesday to sell their plan to legislators -- and make a last-ditch plea for a state sales tax rebate aimed at filling the $30 million gap. They were fighting an uphill battle, however, because legislators have reached agreement on a nearly $58 billion state budget that strips millions of dollars from South Florida's schools.

Their reception in the Capitol was far from warm: House Speaker Johnnie Byrd met with Marlins President David Samson and team lobbyist Will McKinley, but Byrd reiterated his opposition against the sales tax break.

"They had a brief meeting," Byrd spokesman Tom Denham said. "He told them his position had not changed."

A spokeswoman for Senate President Jim King, who has criticized the plan since it surfaced a few weeks ago, said he did not meet with the Marlins on Wednesday. When asked about a rebate for the Marlins, King replied, "Never."

The team wants to be able to keep $2 million a year in sales tax revenue for 30 years, which the team could bond against to help pay for construction. Unlike previous attempts to secure state funding in 2000 and 2001, Gov. Jeb Bush supports the team, but he has not been able to sway legislative leaders.

It is unclear what course team officials will take if state funding isn't approved before the close of the Legislative session Friday, although some think they would have a good shot at the tax break next year. Samson has said a deal needs to be completed this week to ensure an April 2007 opening.

State Sen. Alex Diaz de la Portilla, a key member of the leadership and a Marlins fan, said he's receptive. "I'm going to tell [samson]`Start building your case for next year,'" said Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami. "I'll listen. I'll be open-minded."

Tell Sampson to get his act together and come back next year. Tell him to start camping out in Tally around January...

construction can still begin

Let's face reality, there is 0 chances for state money.

They will need to go for it next year. Hopefuly they can start building with what they have.

You guys talk like they'll be pouring concrete next Tuesday.

Even if everything was approved yesterday they won't turn over so much as a shovel of dirt for a year. The plans and permitting will take that long.

Start Building = Have a Solid and Final Deal in Place
