June 4, 200422 yr Author you're both pathetic....shame on you for insulting and attempting to tarnish the image of one of the best players in MLB. Sosa is a very humble and charismatic guy, and he's done a lot for the people in the DR. Instead of talking s*** about a good guy that made an error, how about we talk about all the others who insult baseball with their behavior? :lol :lol :lol :lol Even if I am just a pissed off White Sox fan (which is possible I suppose) that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my entire life. I really hope you aren't serious. Oh, and even though many of you are ripping on me, and defending Sammy Sosa for being such a "great guy" :lol let me make 2 counterpoints to those of you ripping me: 1. I don't really give a crap what you think. 2. I have succeeded in my goal of getting people to at least talk about this somewhere.
June 4, 200422 yr Author do you guys have like a 30 page thread on this over on white sox interactive? Not sure, I haven't been over there yet today, but probably yes. :lol I bet if today was the 1 year anniversary of Barry Bonds corking his bat, EVERYBODY would be talking about it. Go ahead somebody, try and disprove that point....
June 4, 200422 yr Magglio...If it means anything to you, they had a piece about him on Sportscenter. Did you call ESPN?
June 4, 200422 yr Author Magglio...If it means anything to you, they had a piece about him on Sportscenter. Did you call ESPN? They did??? I'm stunned....and no I didn't call ESPN. Good to hear SOMEBODY remembers what happened though.
June 4, 200422 yr Author Instead of talking s*** about a good guy that made an error, how about we talk about all the others who insult baseball with their behavior? i.e. Mondesi, steroid users (Bonds, Giambi)... Ummm...... I think most people would agree, even some of those who disagree with me in this thread, that's it is highly likely that Sosa has used or still does use steroids.
June 4, 200422 yr My goodness, give Maggs a break. He is pointing out the Anniversary of one of the most shocking moments in sport's history, which is basically unremembered. LMAO!! How do you fingure that out? Sosa was not the first person to be found with cork in his bat nor will he be the last person.
June 4, 200422 yr Author LMAO!! How do you fingure that out? Sosa was not the first person to be found with cork in his bat nor will he be the last person. No, but he has one of if not THE first 500+ home run hitter who was supposed to be a great guy and great humanitarian who would never tarnish the game to be caught with cork.

So your telling me Albert Belle wasnt a big name player or STUD when he was found with cork on his bat? Let it go man it was a year ago and he served his suspension.
June 4, 200422 yr Author So your telling me Albert Belle wasnt a big name player or STUD when he was found with cork on his bat? Let it go man it was a year ago and he served his suspension. Albert Belle was a known jerk, and nobody was surprised by him corking his bat. Sammy Sosa is supposed to be a great humanitarian who would never cheat, and he was caught doing so, but since he's oh great Sammy Sosa, everybody forgets about what he did. That's my problem, oh and before people call me out in this, I was against the White Sox singing Albert Belle because I didn't want a jerk and cheater on my team, and I also never liked him when he was on the Sox.
June 4, 200422 yr Who was the second baseman that Belle absolutely steam rolled? I can't seem to remember.
June 4, 200422 yr Author Who was the second baseman that Belle absolutely steam rolled? I can't seem to remember. Fernando Vina. That was as vicious a collision as I've ever seen in baseball.

The fact that Sosa used cork in and of itself doesn't really bother me. Cheating like this, or nail files in back pockets, or Vaseline on the brim of a pitcher's hat, etc... is an intrinsic part of the folklore of the game. Besides, it's pretty much been scientifically proven that a corked bat has almost no positive effect on the performance of the bat. As a matter of fact, the negative aspect of the bat breaking easier far outweighs any positive benefit. BUT..... The problem I have is that after he got caught red-handed Sammy drug out this fat, sloppy, ugly, absolutely unbeleivable under any circumstances whopper of a story and fed it to the public. Please Sammy, don't pee on my head and tell me its raining. If Sammy would of just owned up to it, explained it as an impulsive reaction to get out of a slump and then taken his 3 or 5 day suspension I wouldn't of cared. BTW, wasn't it Belle who had a teammate crawl through a drop cieling into the ump's locker room and try to steal the confiscated bat?
June 4, 200422 yr BTW, wasn't it Belle who had a teammate crawl through a drop cieling into the ump's locker room and try to steal the confiscated bat? Yeah, I think it was Jason Grimsley. Not sure though.
June 4, 200422 yr They are doing a special on the anniversary of the corked bat incident RIGHT NOW on BBTN.

Oh, and it was Indians pitcher Jason Grimsley who crawled through a vent system at Comiskey Park and tried to take the corked bat from the umpire's room. That was an ALL-TIME classic moment. :lol
June 4, 200422 yr Speaking of the White Sox, even their groundskeepers were cheaters . The Bossard Family (groundskeepers, Chicago White Sox, 1920s-present) When Gene Bossard, who took care of the Comiskey Park field from 1940-83, died in 1998 at age 80, he knew that his legacy of altering the field to the White Sox's advantage would continue through his son, Roger, who followed him as head groundskeeper. According to his Sun-Times obit, "The Comiskey Park infield once was known as 'Bossard's Swamp' because he kept it watered down for sinkerball pitchers Dick Donovan, Tommy John and Joel Horlen. He also soaked the area around first base when opposing base stealers came to town, and he kept the baselines raised so that Nellie Fox's bunts stayed fair." But Dad, Bossard said, was the great innovator. "He invented frozen baseballs in 1967. He and Eddie Stanky (manager of the White Sox). We had three pitchers that year -- Tommy John, Joel Horlen and Gary Peters -- and that was our whole team. We had no offense. In the bowels of the old stadium my dad had an old room where the humidifier was constantly going. By leaving the balls in that room for 10 to 14 days, they became a quarter to a half ounce heavier." And Gene passed on the family know-how. "In 1971 or '72, when Chuck Tanner was our manager, we played Oakland during their dynasty," Roger said. "Chuck said, 'Make sure Billy North doesn't steal a base.' First time, Wilbur Wood walks North on four pitches. Everyone knows he's going to steal. He took a step and a half, but we had doctored the baseline, and he fell to his knees. Our catcher threw to first and tagged him out. Me and my dad had a big smile. But they still beat us by eight runs." During the 1993 playoffs, Toronto's Rickey Henderson fell just short of accusing the youngest Bossard of doing all he could to make Comiskey slow. "These basepaths are soft. Tim Raines has, what, 17 stolen bases (really 21)? Well, you know the field's messed up. He told me he can't run on this stuff. You slip a lot. I think it's one of the worst fields for traction."
June 4, 200422 yr Maintaining a home field advantage has been pretty common throughout the history of most older franchises. In the 80's the grounds crew at Tigers Stadium used to keep the infield grass so high that the ball could actually become completely covered if it came to a stop before it got to the infield dirt. And don't forget the whole Homerdome Air Conditioner fan conspiracy.

June 4, 200422 yr corked bats are probably the most overrated cheat in the history of man kind. big deal, remember last year when b.schowalter had a piece on this he stated that corking your bat does very little if any help. its more of a psycological effect than anything else.
