June 7, 200422 yr The Marlins are kicking around the idea of acquiring Royals CF Carlos Beltran for prospects, then shipping Beltran to the Yankees for RHP Jose Contreras, assuming the Yankees would pay nearly all of the approximately $20 million that Contreras is owed through 2006. The Marlins would use Contreras as a reliever, going with RHP Chad Fox, Contreras and RHP Armando Benitez in the late innings after Fox returns from an elbow injury--a significant upgrade for a bullpen that began the week 12th in the National League in ERA. A more realistic trade could involve Marlins OF Abraham Nunez and Royals RH reliever Jason Grimsley. . . . http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylc=X3oD...v=tsn&type=lgns
June 7, 200422 yr I wouldnt mind at all bearing the Yankees pick up most of Contreras contract. But I'm a little weary over the prospects we would have to give up to acquire Beltran to then ship him to New York.
June 7, 200422 yr I don't want Contreras, free or not, he sucks. All these Cuban pitchers never live up to the hype.
June 7, 200422 yr I prefer the more realistic version. realistic version sounds neat ... although a free contreras is not bad Grimsley defintely has been solid this year for the Royals posting a 2.01 era in 22 innings. Well Contreras really wouldnt be free since we would be giving up prospects for him indirectly from the Beltran trade.
June 7, 200422 yr All these Cuban pitchers never live up to the hype. Livan hernandez... I really don't feel he's lived up to the hype either.
June 7, 200422 yr Wow how about we keep Beltran until the end of the season. Then we see if we can re-sign him or if not he goes. But Beltran could help us alot in LF or RF.

June 7, 200422 yr I in no way will allow this team to talk to Yankees at all unless we are ripping them a new one again (SEE: Lowell, Mike). If we trade for Beltran, the price we pay is for him to stay. End of discussion. Maybe we have a chance at the end of the season, maybe we don't, of resigning him. But if for some reason he is traded and becomes a Marlin, he is a Marlin until October at least, end of story. No arguments. On Earth, Grimsley is nice.
June 7, 200422 yr Wow how about we keep Beltran until the end of the season. Then we see if we can re-sign him or if not he goes. But Beltran could help us alot in LF or RF. Exactly! How about no. Give up every viable prospect we have for 4 months out of a guy. You can't go doing that every year when you're a small market club.

Outfield is not our problem right now.......relief pitching and starting catcher (with pop in his bat) are our greatest needs.

June 7, 200422 yr when you look at it more in depth: we would be trading Carlos Beltran and Prospects(good ones) for contreras thanks, i'll settle for mr. grimsley
June 7, 200422 yr marlins would get the award for dumbest trade of the year if they go for the first scenario.
June 7, 200422 yr I will not coment on this due to conflict of interest. come on..... you know you want to

June 7, 200422 yr this won't happen...beinfest is smarter than this, he wouldn't compromise the future of this franchise for four months with Beltran. I don't see any way on earth of a possible Marlin Beltran resigning with us, not with Penny, AJ and Pavano on the FA market. Second, why on hell would you trade Beltran and some of your best prospectcs for contreras??? Makes no sense whatsoever. If we did this, I would expect Kevin Brown or something, and even then I wouldn't be 100% sure of backing the idea. :thumbdown
June 7, 200422 yr I love something similiar to the Grimsley deal, but the Contreras for prospects is something that shouldn't be done.
June 7, 200422 yr Grimsley deal would be good with me and actually sounds pretty realistic...anyone know what his contract is like?
