Posted June 28, 200420 yr 2004: $12.5M 2005: $12.5M 2006: Team option $15.0M or $1.0M buyout -Option added March 2001 -Includes complete no-trade clause -$6M deferred each year from 2001-3, paid after 2005 If the Rockies would eat half of his salary for the rest of this year and next year, would you want him? I'm not sure what the Rookies would want, but Nunez and a couple good pitching prospects may be enough. The obvious problem is his history of injuries, but he's looked pretty good so far. I think he's worth the gamble if the Rockies pick up a lot of his salary. They're ready to move out all their veterans and rebuild. Perhaps they'd go for it. He also has a no-trade clause, so I'm not sure if he's open to playing in FL. Hopefully he would like a chance at a World Championship and come if we could work out a deal with Colorado. Walker could hit in the 3, 4, or 5 spot. He would GREATLY improve our offense, IMO. Not too mention he is a professional hitter (in the best sense) and may be able to help out some of our younger hitters that are struggling. It would allow us to have Conine to play first and fill-in for Walker and Cabrera when they need a breather. Also, he'd be a great DH when we play A.L. teams; something we don't have now. Pierre Castillo Walker Lowell Cabrera Choi Gonzo Redmond Pitcher I like that lineup. :thumbup I also still like Finley, but he may be harder to get. The stories I've read on him lead me to the conclusion he doesn't want to move away from AZ or Cali. Walker may be our best chance to get a real middle of the lineup hitter. Yeah, yeah, I know it won't happen, but I can dream, anyway. :whistle
June 28, 200420 yr well we wont play the DH again till the WS and Admin wont want to leave the West Coast(most likely) and he is gonna get hurt again
June 28, 200420 yr i don't think this is as crazy of an idea as you might think. as time goes on, i think the Rockies are realizing that they A) have too much contract and B) don't need to bring the world's greatest hitters onto their teams in order to generate runs at Coors Field. they also discovered this year that they have two pretty darned good OF prospects who played when Preston and Admin were hurt. Right now, they have Bunitz and Castilla hitting 7 and 8 in their lineup...it's safe to say the have a little offense to spare. the toughest thing would be to get him to agree to it (hitters LOVE playing at Coors), and to get the Rockies to eat the salary. but if they would, it could be a magnificent gamble.
June 28, 200420 yr Author Ramp, I don't think Colorado is part of the West Coast. Which team was it that Walker refused to be traded to last year (or this off-season)? Wasn't it the Diamondbacks? I've never heard of him saying he wouldn't go to the East Coast, but I could be wrong. As for getting hurt, people used that excuse before the year when I mentioned we should go after Griffey. Right now I'm sure most people would love to have him hitting #4 even if he is hitting around .250. We need another legitimate run producing bat in the middle of the order. Fishin, That was my thinking. However, I don't think eating the salary is that big of a deal to the Rockies if they get enough prospects in return. The money they are paying Walker is dead money right now. They'd at least be getting some of it off their books and get talent in return. They aren't going anywhere with him on their team as it is.
June 28, 200420 yr Contract is too big - and probably a good reason to think Colorado would deal him. I dont think that it is as unlikely as you think either, but I dont think Walker would be a good fit for this team. He is getting old and has been very injury prone of late. Very good bat, but with he and Conine in OF, would be a possible problem.
June 28, 200420 yr Ramp, I don't think Colorado is part of the West Coast. uh sure it is just like Indiana is on the East Coast
June 28, 200420 yr I think his whole family is here in Co. From what I read in the papers, he's really happy and as far as the team goes - the only real sign of life they have until Preston gets his swing back
June 28, 200420 yr i'd rather have preston wilson back! The Rockies would to send him back here all tied in a bow if it would help. Perhaps you haven't followed his season too clossely, he's an albatross around the franchise's neck. He's played in a grand total of 13 games and his batting a mighty .178 with zero (as in zilch, nada, no) homeruns.
June 28, 200420 yr well yes.. he's been injured. but he's not a bad player by all means, and a good fielder. and i liked his play when he was on the marlins. even the strikeouts.. i found much humor in that. ;0
June 28, 200420 yr Danny Bautista is the answer to all our problems! damn this dude is a genious...... when are the rest you gonan see the light!!!!!
June 28, 200420 yr i'd rather have preston wilson back! :lol Thats a joke right? Preston can only hit in Coors he never hit with RISP in PPS. What makes you think he would do it now in the year 2004? :whistle
