Coach K to Lakers??????????????????????????????

Featured Replies

I just saw video footage of the rally in Durham. Ugly Duke nerds out in full force with their cheer sheets banging on drums and dancing around.

Seriously you can't make this stuff up.

That's so Maryland. Bash Duke kids because they're smart (some of them, anyway), and then bash them for giving a s***.

Why don't you head over to Durham, and start flipping cars and lighting them on fire? Be sure to bring some bottles to throw at players' parents' heads.

I don't really mean to lump you in with the Maryland fan persona, but I can't really see what's so wrong with a bunch of kids doing what they can to convince Coach K to stay. I wonder what MD fans would do if Gary Williams left.

*Eats a whole plate full of his own words*

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was growing more confident with each passing day, but this is great news. Things are looking up, my friends, things are looking up!

So what did K get out of the new President?

Pot for Redick?

A stereo for Williams?

A job for Randolph's mother?

A promise that Duke football will continue to suck and not take attention away from him?

Ted Roof is bringing a new attitude to the football program, along with competent coaches and highly touted recruits. They'll make you eat your words.

Just stupid, Duke has really run a shabby program. Pretty sad that as a twerp fan you have to hold out for a coach to leave to try and compete at the same level.

What also is sad is that sicne no one else really gave a crap about you guys you have to create a rivalry that does not exist.

BullDurham: You know what I meant. K doesn't want football taking attention away from his program. Maybe you'll beat UNC this year, but you have a long way to go befoe reaching FSU and Miami or even Maryland and Clemson.

Passion's drinking the koolaid I see Duke basketball is not free of scandals (see Maggette, Boozer, Duhon) or a bunch of valedictorians with upstanding character (Sheldon, Redick, Dockery).

And again remind me how the Terps fared last year with the second youngest team in Division I last year? ACC champions, was it? Since Dean left Maryland's been the only one who could consistently challenge K and his McDonald High School All-Americans. Terps fans consider it a rivalry because the two teams are often competing for the ACC title. We also consider Virginia a regional rival and NC State a historic rival, but there's no point in getting worked up over teams we domnate.

The "Twerps" as the Duke fans like to call em here don't even have close to a top notch football program. Even when they were supposed to be good they got blown out by a Gator team that wasn't all that special.

Magette was the only violation and that had to do with a booster, K had nothing to do with it.

The Duhon situation was all a load of crap that the media hyped up and was from a few unreliable sources.

Boozer? God forbid someone's parents move closer to where their son is playing D1 basketball and god forbid they have jobs ligned up in advance before they move all the way from Anchorage, Alaska. Again, a rumor and an untrue one.

What about former Maryland basketball player Duane Simpkins? 8,000 dollars in un-paid parking fees.

What about the probabtion you were put under for violations under Bob Wade? Give me a time when Duke was under probation.

Knock Redick, you hate him because he is good. He went to a party where there was pot, what a shock. I think 95% oif the parties I go to at my school thier is some type of drugs there, but that doesnt mean I take part in them. He took a urine test, nothing was positive.

At least he hasnt pulled a Bias yet and killed himself.

The charges against Shelden were dropped. He was only kicked off the high school team because his Coach was trying to look like a stand up guy and prove to people he could win without his best player. People make mistakes, get over it.

Dockery is a bad kid because he had trouble qualifying? Get off it dude, he passed fair and square and is now enrolled. So if you are not as smart as say a uhhhh Nik Caner Medley? Your point is stupid and what does that ve to do with Coach K?

You are reaching dude.

As for the rivalry, please Dont EVER say that you are rivals with us. You are not. You have no history with us and we already have our rival.

Maryland has perhaps the trashiest fans in college basketball, wait, they are the trashiest. UNC fans are more creative than Twerps yelling F*** You! at the top of their lungs.

Is Marlyand the better team because they throw bottles at Duke players parents after you lose a 10 point lead in 56 seconds?

Once you get even a tenth of the program Duke has or at least a semi-classy program, come talk to me about being a rival of someone.

You probably wont respond to this because it includes facts and not just base-less slams on stuff that is untrue or rumored.

:lol

Such a passionate defense.

Duke is like every other major school. There's scandals. There's character issues. There's awful fans. I just find it funny that the major media and the Dukies themselves don't realize it.

I realize plenty but I also knwo when their are people looking for the tiniest thing to bring Duke from the top perch and it makes me sick.

Perhaps they are bringing up the tiniest things because they're sick of hearing how Duke is the only clean program out there and K is rescuing college basketball.

Duke has a fine upstanding program (although my Terps have the highest SAT scores at the moment), but it's a bit too much. That and this: http://www.sad-penguin.com/files/dook_banner.jpg

But oh well..

Now congrats to K, the team and the school for staying together. I really hope it didn't cost Ted Roof's football program much as has been rumored. And hopefully K can recruit some big men and be back to challenging for the ACC title this year or next. It wouldn't be the same without him, although it really hasn't been the same since Dean Smith left either.

Come on.

It's almost as silly as the one UNC has for the four-way ACC first place tie in '95.

A Final AP Ranking is actually an accomplishment though.

Ill agree to disagree.

Nothing we are going to say to each other will have any type of effect. So, good luck on your season and get ready for us to shock the world.

Coach K pulls a real fast one

BY JASON WHITLOCK

Knight Ridder Newspapers

DURHAM, N.C. - (KRT) - It was a shakedown worthy of a "Sopranos'' episode.

Don Mike Krzyzewski, head of the all-powerful Tobacco Road family, consigliere David Falk and underboss Joe Alleva took Duke University's five-day-old president Richard Brodhead to the cleaners, and Brodhead still has no idea that a credit card is missing from the wallet he left in his slacks. Nor does he care.

Don K's heist was so clean and so deceptive that even the bosses of college basketball's other families are unaware that his shakedown ultimately taxed all of their points.

Early Monday evening inside Cameron Indoor Stadium, after an alleged "serious'' flirtation with the Los Angeles Lakers, Coach K listened to the school president he barely knows gush about his integrity and his importance to Duke, and gloat about the world's good fortune that Mike Krzyzewski won't be leaving amateur athletics.

The whole thing just made you feel warm and fuzzy.

Unless you've watched one too many reruns of the Sopranos, or were curious about whether any money exchanged hands.

"We were able to do a few things for Mike in his contract,'' mumbled Alleva, Duke's athletic director, when asked whether the "lifetime'' contract Don K signed in 2001 had been modified.

Before I go any further, let me state quite clearly that I think Coach K is awesome for college athletics. He's an outstanding coach, a true leader and someone of high character. He's as good as it gets in big-time athletics.

But this affair with the Lakers now seems very orchestrated, choreographed, put together. It was a well-timed score.

One year after North Carolina lavished Roy Williams with a perk$-laden contract, not long after the ACC made a huge commitment to football, just weeks after his two best players jumped to the NBA and during Brodhead's first week on the job, suddenly Coach K, the face of college basketball, wants to contemplate a move to LA.

At least now we know Quin Snyder got it honestly.

"The decision has always been to stay at Duke,'' Coach K said Monday.

Nope. He was never on the brink of taking the Los Angeles job offer his superagent, David Falk, arranged. Falk is the NBA's version of Scott Boras. You see, everyone thinks Kobe Bryant pulled the string to get Coach K in the LA mix. I say it's the work of Falk. Coach K didn't want the job. He just wanted the highly public offer and the terms of the proposed agreement leaked.

Alleva legitimized the offer last Thursday by holding a news conference that Coach K conveniently didn't attend. A real Don never gets his hands dirty.

"There wasn't a negative that prompted this,'' Coach K said when asked whether the early player defections in college basketball made him consider moving to the pros. "One of the reasons I coach is because of the challenges.''

Hmmm. Last week when Alleva - who has worked with Krzyzewski for all of Coach K's 24 years at Duke - was fueling the flames that Coach K was LA-bound, the athletic director insinuated quite strongly that Krzyzewski was frustrated by the early defections.

"The state of college basketball is not the greatest in the world,'' Alleva said last week when asked what might motivate Coach K to jump. "And I'm sure that's frustrating when you recruit a kid and they don't show up and you recruit a kid and they come for one year and leave. That's frustrating.''

Alleva left you with the impression that he wasn't speculating about Krzyzewski's feelings.

"I've had a lot of conversations with (Coach K) in the last few days,'' Alleva said last week. "He has meant so much for Duke and college basketball that obviously we're going to try to do everything we can to keep him in college basketball.''

Monday, Alleva wouldn't be specific about what Duke did to keep Coach K. When asked directly about a new practice facility, Alleva said: "We were going to do that anyway.''

What about new contracts for Coach K's assistants?

"No,'' Alleva said, appearing disturbed by the question.

Did the assistant coaches get pay raises?

Alleva looked at me and walked away.

It was a great score. It was old-school. Coach K never raised his voice or his hand, but he let his new president know exactly who runs things on Tobacco Road. He also sent a similar message to basketball recruits across the land: Coach K is the unquestioned king of amateur hoops. Check "SportsCenter'' and USA Today if you doubt it.

Think about it. Coach K, without uttering a word or meeting face-to-face with owner Jerry Buss, had us all believing he might uproot his family and move to the West Coast for the privilege of coaching a young man who is scheduled to stand trial for rape this year.

I feel stupid for falling for it. Brodhead shouldn't. He had no other choice.

Reusse: Coach K gets his way again

Pat Reusse

July 6, 2004

DUKE'S MIKE KRZYZEWSKI did not get the referees' calls he had come to expect -- all of them -- last season. He was at his sniveling best at the end of the NCAA semifinal loss to Connecticut, when he shouted at officials Ted Hillary and Olandis Poole, "You killed us, you killed us."

Krzyzewski lobbied against the ACC's expansion plan to increase its football presence. He lost that argument.

Krzyzewski was upset at the decisions of freshman Luol Deng and incoming recruit Shaun Livingston to enter the NBA draft. And he wanted to Duke to build him a practice facility.

That's what this charade of a possible move to the L.A. Lakers was all about: a power play by Krzyzewski to remind Duke, college basketball (as in ESPN) and the ACC/NCAA (and their people in charge of officiating) how much all those entities need his visibility.

You have to like Krzyzewski's chances of getting that new practice facility, considering that Duke President Richard Brodhead led a "Please stay, Coach K" rally last Thursday on campus.

If a local writer published a similar article on the Marlins, based entirely on speculation, loaded with "gotcha!" smarm, and insistent that a more benign viewpoint is completely naive...rferry, you'd bash that article to pieces, and rightfully so.

These two articles are sports journalism at its worst. You want to suggest that Coach K was making a power play? Fine, but do it with some integrity and class, and don't write like you know for a fact that's how it went down.

Beradino and Le Batard have a lot of egg on their face from similar junk they wrote last year. These articles are trash.

Uh, Passion, I can comment on the Redick thing. I am a good friend of the RA who saw JJ in that dorm room with the pot. She pretty much insinuated that he was doing it as well.

However, compared to Len Bias, Redick would have still been a choir boy in terms of the drug intake he had.
