I believe Eck had an injury and we know Smoltz did. Izzy couldn't make it as a starter, turned into a fine closer. Mesa started his career with the Jays and O's as a starter. I believe it was Cleveland that put him in a closer role and he was pretty dominant for a few years. Graves just began closing recently after being a starter.
