July 11, 200421 yr Both players are underrated. Lee is certainly the better player. It was a very wise and most excellent deal for the Marlins, and I say that despite the fact that Lee was my favorite player on the team.
July 11, 200421 yr by the way, if you extrapolate choi's current numbers to full-time numbers against both righties and lefties, you get: .263 avg .376 obp .499 slg .875 ops not bad, but not even close to lee's numbers.
July 11, 200421 yr lee is the better player right now, but choi will be the better player later down the road.
July 11, 200421 yr I'd rather have Lee but I'm not losing sleep over having Choi....that would be caffeine that's keeping me from bed
July 11, 200421 yr Perhaps another way to look at it is Choi now vs. Derrek at the AS Break last year ------------AVG OBP HR ABs RBIs Runs Lee 2003 .263 .372 19 308 52 51 Choi 2004 .275 .394 14 233 29 26 Even taking account Choi hasn't started full time, Lee still was more productive last year. I am very pleased with the progress Choi has made this year. His defense has been great, and a much smaller drop off than might have been expected. His hitting continues to improve, and I expect him to be a major contributor in the 2nd half. Choi showed he can hit lefties tonight didn't he???? For the month of July, Choi is hitting .348, Lee .276 451728 Doesn't change much, but Choi has 35 RBIs not 29
July 11, 200421 yr It's a fallacy to say that Lee sucked in the clutch. He was average in the clutch just like most of the team (minus a few....i.e. Pudge). Lee is one of the most underrated Marlins that we've had, and people really don't seem to realize how good a hitter he really was. Choi is a solid consolation prize, but Lee was consistent (played every day), got hot after the AS break, had incredible D, had very good power, and is NOW HITTING OVER .300. Lee > Choi in the baseball department obviously Choi is cheaper, and like I said, he's a good consolation prize...but if money was even, I'd take Lee over Choi ANYDAY.
July 11, 200421 yr Ok, I'm gonna be the accountant (and pathetic nerd) here and put some perspective here on prices. All numbers from ESPN.com stats Choi- 35 RBI- $310,000 total salary, 166,481.47 would be paid thus far as 87/162 games have been played for the Marlins= $4,756.61 per RBI Lee- 49 RBI- $6,166,667 total salary, 3,273,662.60 would be paid thus far as 86/162 games have been played for the Cubs=$66,809.44 per RBI Choi appears to be quite the deal, of course.. Defense is priceless.

To call D Lee underrated is almost, in fact it is laughable.
July 11, 200421 yr It is NOT a fallacy to say D Lee sucked in the clutch. To call D Lee underrated is almost, in fact it is laughable. D Lee struck out way too many times with runners in scoring position.
July 11, 200421 yr It is NOT a fallacy to say D Lee sucked in the clutch. 452597 if you look at his numbers, it is. theres zero statistical truth to it.
July 11, 200421 yr Marlins2003 = pwned I really don't wanna bring up old stats like I did last season. Last season, at the time, everyone was all over Enc's balls like Jim Nabors and a barrel full of buttholes (ok, I stole that from Admin the Cable Guy), yet they were quite comparable in stats w/RISP. If you wanna make a stat battle, Marlins2003, we can. The fact remains, Lee did not suck in "the clutch". He may not have been GREAT in the clutch, but he didn't suck.

July 11, 200421 yr Lee sucked in the clutch, watch all the games from last year(except for one big hit in the postseason)
July 11, 200421 yr clever....go look up your stats if needed 452675 Staheads :banghead LOLOLOLOL
July 11, 200421 yr actually, not so much. Prove to me he sucked in the clutch. You point out an instance where he strikes out when we need a big hit, and I'll find ANY other player who does the same.

July 11, 200421 yr he did it most of all? How do you figure....and Marlins2003 prove to me w/out stats then that Lee was terrible in the clutch.
July 11, 200421 yr these are all unfounded remarks! I can say Pudge sucks this season. Without proving with stats, it's unfounded.
July 11, 200421 yr Derrek Lee, 2003, Close and Late 76 AB .197 Avg .224 Slg 0 HR 4 RBI 27 K 8 R Real clutch :plain
July 11, 200421 yr Enc, by comparison: 90 AB .256 Avg .389 Slg 2 HR 10 RBI 14 K 12 R Neither was great, but um DLee was in a class of his own for futility.
