1B: Choi vs Lee

Featured Replies

The battle between Choi vs Lee...who is better?

Beinfest looks like a genius...Choi not only tops Lee in the HR department by 2, but he has a lot less ABs....Not to mention the price tags...check out the stats...

------AVG OBP HR ABs

Lee .302 .374 12 308

Choi .275 .394 14 233

Who is better?

yea but if they were both the same price, i would take lee.

he has speed,defense,power. awesome player.

choi has been doing good, alot better than expected but still has holes in his swing, less speed, and dont even compare them for defense, but 2 or 3 more years. then beinfest would look like a genius

You have to factor in price here..Choi was definitely a good deal. Plus fans love him, he's the only on that gets his name chanted and it's every time he comes to the plate! He's no Lee, but his D is on the underrated side..he's made some damn good picks.

choi's AVG, SLG, and OBP are incredibly deceptive.... he pretty much only faces right-handers.

lee is better with the bat and the glove, but choi definitely isn't a bad consolation prize. i'd say we won by a mile in that trade.

Choi is definitely at least above average defensively

Lee does have the edge in speed for sure...defense also

I think Seop has the potential to hit for better average

how bout rbi's. lee has to have more. i mean choi walks so much he dosent get alot of chances

Well Marlins are offensively challenged so i left that out....most offensive stats do depend on the lineup around you but I figured with RBIs it becomes an even greater factor

I think Seop has the potential to hit for better average

i gotta disagree with you there. choi leads the league in "swings and misses" and almost all of his ABs are against righties. if he played full-time, i can guarantee you that .278 average would look a lot uglier.

Perhaps another way to look at it is Choi now vs. Derrek at the AS Break last year

------------AVG OBP HR ABs RBIs Runs

Lee 2003 .263 .372 19 308 52 51

Choi 2004 .275 .394 14 233 29 26

Even taking account Choi hasn't started full time, Lee still was more productive last year.

I am very pleased with the progress Choi has made this year. His defense has been great, and a much smaller drop off than might have been expected. His hitting continues to improve, and I expect him to be a major contributor in the 2nd half. Choi showed he can hit lefties tonight didn't he????

For the month of July, Choi is hitting .348, Lee .276

It's the guys first full year in the Majors if I'm not mistaken...he'll improve, and he's already not that bad

Was Lee this good his first year? I don't remember.

Nope...It took Lee a few years to establish himself. I'm pretty sure he was even sent down to the minors during his first full season. He was very streaky for a few years. He was the type of player that boosted his numbers with a strong September. It was really only the last few years that he's established himself as a productive hitter. Yet, he was always expected to be that 40+ homerun and 100+ RBI a year guy, which he still has not been..

I'm not trying to knock Derrek Lee. I liked him a lot, but we all know how he couldn't hit in the clutch. I'm happy with Choi.

Lee was an awesome player but Choi is also making a case. I like D.Lee more but Choi gets on base way more. Also more clutch, thats what lee's problem was, Clutch hitting.

That's what I thought.

Choi isn't going to disappoint us.

I dont think we can compare yet since we all know an have seen that D Lee gets his hottest after the break.

I think you cant make a comparison without factoring in money. The Marlins had to shed some money in order to keep the core of this team intact - they did that and that was helped by dealing Lee for Choi.

Choi is actually much better at this point in his career than Lee was. I like Choi a lot and he has been pretty good all around. I think both teams got what they wanted with this deal.

Holes in his swing?

Because DLee doesn't have any? :shifty

lee spent a lot time in AAA during the '99 season and struggled to hit .200 up in the bigs and i believe he was the same age choi is now.

Pretty good bargain if you asked me...a 27 point drop in average, and D Lee's would not be that high if he were playing in Pro Player I think, same with home run total so at this point there is no doubt I would take Choi especially since it could mean resigning some starting pitchers in the offseason

id take choi....

he has the potential to be the scariest hitter in the NL.

pitchers are afraid of him, while cabs and lowell hit more HR's choi gets more walks. they try to pitch around him, because they know choi can knock them into the netherlands.
