July 18, 200421 yr We lost again today for a lot of reasons. But, I have trouble accepting continuing coaching errors. Cox again today. Harris on 3rd, a contact situation, and Harris was held when the ball was hit. He would have scored. There was no big decision involved. Go on contact. Basic baseball. Cox is terrible. And I blame Jack for keeping him so long. Give me Mordy coaching 3rd. Or, at this point, almost anyone but Jeff Cox.
July 18, 200421 yr I guess Cox's previous mistakes have made him trigger shy. I wasn't 100% sure that Lenny would've made it and I would've seriously smacked my head if we wasted another out at home plate. I guess it doesn't matter since we can't seem to advance runners home anyway.
July 18, 200421 yr Eh, it really wouldn't have mattered since we would've lost anyway thanks to Koch.
July 18, 200421 yr Author Unlike Cox's other bad judgments, there was no judgment here. You tell the runner to get a good lead and go on contact (unless it's smashed directly back to the pitcher.) Basic Baseball. You say Cox may be shy pullling the trigger after all of his other mistakes. He has no business coaching 3B in any league!
July 18, 200421 yr he would've scored and you cant say it dosent matter cause koch blew it cause then if we take the lead the game becomes a lot different
July 18, 200421 yr The Marlins should fire third base coach Jeff Cox :thumbup There have been at least three plays in which he has made stupid decisions: 1 - Waving Cabrera home on a play in which he had no chance of making it. :banghead 2 - Not sending Choi on a play in which he had time to score. :mischief2 3 - And most recently he should have sent Harris, it seems to me that he had a chance to score. :mischief2
July 18, 200421 yr Last year Ozzie Guillen was aggressive at third (to the point that it was stupid), but it worked because the defense rarely made good throws. I didn't mind Cox sending Miggy that one day, but send the runners. There should be a green light all the time. We have a better chance scoring on the basepaths than we do from the plate.
July 18, 200421 yr It is not the responsibility of the third base coach to send a runner from third on a ground ball. The manager either puts on the contact play or he doesnt. And with Harris's speed, you cant having him go on contact. Personally, I don't think there's any way he would have scored. With a tie game in the 8th, the second baseman would have thrown home if Harris had left third rather than getting the out at first and would have at least gotten Harris in a rundown. But I know people would rather blame someone than look at the situation.

And Harris is not all that slow, particularly when he is anticipating the play. Someone told him not to go. Maybe you are right. Maybe it was Jack. That's even worse. It's always nice to have a MODERATOR step in to clear things up.
July 19, 200421 yr I wouldn't blame Cox on this one, Lenny probably can't remember where home plate is, its been awhile since he's been on base. It looked to me like he had to stop a couple of times and ask for directions.
July 19, 200421 yr Anyone notice the Pirates were playing the infield in? Harris would have been out my a mile.
July 19, 200421 yr Anyone notice the Pirates were playing the infield in? Harris would have been out my a mile. 464085[/snapback] but it was a slow dribbler to 2B... just sayin
July 19, 200421 yr i dont think the pirates would have even tried to throw home at lenny i mean figuring our bullpen of late 1 run was probaly nothing they went into the 8th knowing they were gonna win ... as for the marlins our players just seem to be lost hoping that we can scrap up a win
July 19, 200421 yr Cox needs to continue to be aggressive - dont get shell shocked. I am more concerned about the Marlins base running in general. For fly balls, for example, they need to sit on the bag and tag up - dont run half way down the line, then come back and tag. Stupid.
July 19, 200421 yr I think Lenny would have scored had he run on contact. But, even if it would have been a close play at home, he had to take the chance especially as the team's run production has been so poor and opportunities have been so scarce. I would rather see Lenny tagged out at home than have him left stranded on third.
