PNC to have 2006 All Star Game

Report: PNC to host '06 ASG

07/19/2004 1:21 PM ET

PITTSBURGH -- PNC Park will be the site of the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to a report published on Monday in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Pirates and Major League Baseball have called a press conference for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. ET, at which time it will likely be announced that the Pirates have been awarded the right to host the 2006 Midsummer Classic. Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to be on hand to make the announcement.

Pirates GM Dave Littlefield would neither confirm nor deny that his club had submitted the winning bid, but he did recognize that the ability to host the event would be a great asset for both the organization and the city.

"We've got a beautiful ballpark at PNC Park," he said. "To be able to showcase it would be tremendous accomplishment for the region."

In April, Pirates CEO and general managing partner Kevin McClatchy announced that Pittsburgh was one of five cities being considered as candidates to host the event. He and his staff worked with officials from the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County for several months to develop a proposal that outlined the city's ability to handle the influx of fans, baseball officials and media who would flock to the region for the All-Star festivities.

"It's a very extensive process," said McClatchy at the time. "I want to make sure folks know that the city, county and a lot of people spent a lot of time with us trying to get this. It does have a strong economic impact on the region."

In addition to helping the city's economy, the event should help the team increase its season ticket base, which has decreased since PNC Park opened to rave reviews in 2001. The club saw an increase in ticket sales of 40 percent prior to hosting the 1994 All-Star Game at Three Rivers Stadium.

"A lot of people have said that the 1994 All-Star Game in Pittsburgh was one of the best they have ever seen," said McClatchy. "I think that shows that Pittsburgh can do it."

In addition to the 1994 contest, Pittsburgh has been the site of the 1944, 1959 and 1974 Midsummer Classics.

By 2008 the new ballpark should be in it's second year. We had the 2000 game before Henry and Selig took it away.

Again, just becasue they havent had it means they HAVE to get it. The Trop is a load of crap. The parking is crap there. It would be hell getting to St. Pete for that game.

You don't even know what you are talking about! There is enough parking for 44,000 people. In 1999 they hosted the NCAA Final Four without much problems.

They will start building in late 2004 or early 2005 by all indications. They must get permiting done, condemn the properties, buy them and such, but construction will start before next season.

I only lived in Tampa for four years.

The final four there (which I went to) was tabbed by CBS and many others as one of the biggest nightmares they had been involved in.

That was over 60,000 people..the Trop can handle a capacity 44,000 well.

They have so much experience with it too......

Forget the parking, that stadium is just putrid. Its like a concrete dungeon on the inside and the stadium has no charachter. It will nto be getting an ASG any time soon.

Come on, tell us how you really feel... :lol

We actually needed another thread for this?

Anyway no way in hell will they go to Tampa for the all star game in 07. The only reason monstrosities were getting games in the early 90's was because the bowls were still common. They will never go to The TROP and if I remember The Skydome has yet to have one, that should have it before the ugliest stadium in The AL gets it.

Also in 08, it's SBC and that's pretty much a given. They were the top contender to Pitt.

Toronto had 91

Ah.

Anyway 07 should go to Yankee Stadium, they have not had it in awhile and of course they are more deserving than tampa.

Why not Anaheim or Oakland? We haven't had one out west in a while

They're going to break the rotation of AL, NL, and after next year there will be long string of All Star games at NL parks. SF will probably get 2007, St. Louis will probably get 2008, Arizona 2009, Cincinatti 2010, San Diego 2011, and Philadelphia 2012

Beautiful park, though.
