Playing LF is easier than RF or CF. Shortest distance to plate in most cases for righties. Castro has a good arm, could probably run as well as Hollandsworth, LF at the Pro isn't too hard because of the Teal Tower. He is a catcher that stops the ball from getting past him, the LF does that except with more ground to cover

i just remember something in 99-2000 with castro in left. He could do it though, i have no doubt. Cliff was slower than him last year with the knee and he covered left pretty well.

Ummm, ok. Back to reality. No, Pudge isn't going into left, nor is Castro, nor are they going to let Redmond throw some innings, nor make Looper drive the team bus.

Cabrera will be up no later than August 1. Either because Lowell is gone (99 percent probability) or because absolutely everyone else with any worth (Lee, Castillo, etc) is gone to compensate for Lowell's upcoming salary.

As for that mysterious "Special Money" that Loria threw out for Pudge. It ain't a reoccuring event. Pudge's salary is backloaded, and a significant portion (I think I heard 5-6 mil) is deferred, regardless of his future team.

-Castro in LF is not far-fetched.

-You're idea is too negative. It ain't true, heres some possible scenario!

-Pudge's money is "special" money so lets count it out of the salary for next year. The owner came up with it seperate from Beinfest's budget. 3 or 4mil. or so

-Lets get rid of V. Nunez's contract 1 mil or so

-Lets get rid of Fox and Mordecai 1.7 mil or so

-Lets get rid of Penny through trade to unload his salary 3.5 mil or so right?

-Lets get rid of H-Worth 1 mil or so

-Lets get rid of Burnett's salary because it is covered by insurance. 2 mil or so?

-About 12.2 mil in free $$$ for payroll for 2004. (Savings from Penny's raised salary next year - cost of traded player's salary.)

-The 12.2 mil is minimum free $$$, Beinfest could get more from Loria if Loria lets him.

you do know the reason the marlins won the world series, is also part taken due to a strong bench. you cant give everything away for 2 starting players

nunez and hollandsworth i would give up, but no fox or mordy, they can play numerous positions which is valueable

Ok, Cape, let's try this out for a sec.....

1) Let's not "count out" Pudge's deferred money, since it is going to be paid? That's like saying lets "count out" Hampton's 5 mil that we are paying just because he isn't here. It all comes from Loria's checkbook, regardless of who or where it goes.

2) Castro anywhere but catcher is far fetched. He's played a handful of games there, and the Marlins can ill-afford to turn their major league club into a clinic for a couple months to see if a guy can make a switch. And then we also have to find another C.

3) Let's get rid of Mordecai? Ok, but he's dirt cheap. It's not like you are going to get a cheaper player that's better. As a matter of fact, your plan calls for the dumping of 5 players and finding another catcher. I would think that signing six new players would cost some dough out of the free-agent pool you've created. Fact is, with the poor performance of alot of these players, they will probably be good values to resign next year as their value deflates.

4) Trade Penny's 3.5. Once again, great idea. But you won't get a decent enough return for his potential. Plus, he was known throughout the league as damaged goods before this year, and Arnsberg-gate didn't help that situation.

6) The fish still have to pay the deductible on Burnett's insurance. I beleive the standard is either 90 or 120 days, so there's more cash gone.

Anyway, your idea is creative, and I'm sure one or two aspects of it will come to fruition. BUt having 40 percent of your roster turn over in the off-season isn't exactly a recipe for success, especially to free up less than 10 percent of your payroll for free agents after you replace the rest of the roster and all is said and done.

No one in baseball thinks Penny is damaged goods. It was a vicious rumor. I think he has proven it to be false. I spoke to a head scout in Arlington, there scouting Penny, who said they want him really bad but cant get the Marlins to do a trade. He told me the press started that rumor and that his organization knows there is no truth to it. He was with the REDS.

Well I think once he had the new MRI taken it proved they were just rumored...

I have heard that the Reds and Rangers have been the biggest bidders for Penny...

My idea could work, we supposedly have good prospects for 2004 ready to come up right? You don't have to trade away everyone, those are just potential moves to cut costs. Gotta bring up the farmhands some day! I think that Loria will raise payroll next year a little, maybe $60 million.

Pudges money is seperate from our normal budget! Our payroll will not reflect his money because this was Loria's special money. Hampton will count because it was in a trade. The hampton deal saved us a lot so i don't fault it at all.
