August 28, 200421 yr Burnett and Beckett are not going to get big raises....they are both arbitration eligible but they are not going to get much because of their records and ERA and injuries. they are not having great seasons so they cant compare themselves to other pitchers who are getting paid good and are having good seasons. Arbitration means you will get paid on how you compare to other players and the season that you had not on your potential. so expect A.J and Josh back next year and not making much more than what they are making this year.
August 28, 200421 yr Say good night to Pavs and Benitez....There's no need for Mando with Mota, Spoon, Koch and Fox to save games...It's unnecessary money spent....If we deal Encarnacion then maybe we can keep Pavs....I just can't see him openin the pocket book unless the park fills up the rest of the season and i mean at least 40k a night. 529592 Why would Billy Koch want to stay? He's not getting playing time, and there will be atleast one team that will give him first dibs on winning the closer job. Here, he's behind Benitez/Mota and Spooneybarger (and Fox, if he comes back) next year. Sorry, Billy's leaving. I'd much rather keep Pavano than LoDuca. Willingham/Redmond >>> Michael Tejerrible Also, because how the revenue sharing formula is set up, attendance means little to low revenue teams like the Marlins. They have to claim local revenues at a much higher percentage than the Yankees, Orioles and Mets of the baseball world. The only benefit attendance brings to low-revenue teams is when convincing local politicians of the team's popularity for the purpose of a new stadium.

Beckett contributed a lot to win this team a World Series, all the revenues and exposure that come with, and in all likelyhood a new stadium. Most arbitrators will decide with him. Burnett has been a good pitcher and if not for injuries he would making some big green already. Remember his salary was cut this past year and the club lowballed him the year before that. He'll get somewhere close to $4 million. Hopefully Loria/Beinfest and AJ can avoid arbitration and re-sign him to a long-term deal (same with Pavano).
August 28, 200421 yr Author If I understand correctly, any trades qualifying for post-season roster must be done by next Tuesday, August 31. If this is true... very exciting next few days.
August 28, 200421 yr I honestly don't see Benitez leaving as easily as others do. Who are the teams that are going to give him the big money? Red Sox maybe, someone along those lines. That's a huge market, close to where he didn't do so hot. He'd have to exercise his demons 19 times a year, and somehow I don't think Armando wants that. Who could pay him? Anaheim has Percival. LA has Gagne. Philly has Wagner. Houston has Lidge. Cubs have both Hawkins and Borowkski. The teams that may need a closer won't be able to give him significantly more than we can. This is one player that I think will choose happiness over money

If this is true... very exciting next few days. 529698 Pavano, or Benitez won't clear waivers. So no it won't be very interesting. Pavano has to be kept, even if we have to overpay. Beinfest traded Penny too soon, and if Pavano goes in the offseason we'll have a terrible starting rotation. Lo Duca is expendable for 2 reasons. Willingham's bat is ready and with another year in Arizona Fall League I think he'll be able to do an adequate job behind the plate, not to mention we have a very solid backup in Redmond. Also, we can trade Lo Duca and get young quality players that will be able to fill the holes we'll have at RF and the 5th starter spot. No way Benitez will be back unless he takes the same salary he took this year which won't happen.
August 28, 200421 yr And they are going to dump them both just to get Benitez? To who? Besides, Cubs are one of the Big 6 and one of those pressure markets Armando isn't fond of. He likes it here, and no other chill team can give him so much money that he would want to leave in a hurry. Here he also has the luxury of a team dedicated to winning in the present, the best setup man in baseball, and an otherwise solid relief corps next year (featuring Nate Bump, who has gone back to last year's form, a healthy Tim Spooneybarger, and maybe another young arm or two). He won't come as expensive as some think, and I believe his 1-5 options will be to resign here because he absolutely loves it here and he can't ask for a more perfect situation as far as he is concerned. He might go the way of Mikey and Luiy and help us out financially to make sure Pavs and/or Lo Duca stay, as well as getting AJ and Josh signed long term.
August 28, 200421 yr Um burnett is a free agent after this year and yea there's a little teams named the Cubs that do need a closer don't kid urself thinking there satisfied with hawkins
August 28, 200421 yr Benitez will not stay. Every team is always in the need of some bullpen help, and a lot of teams have money. For example, the orioles have an inconsistent closer, and a whole lotta cash.
August 28, 200421 yr Um burnett is a free agent after this year and yea there's a little teams named the Cubs that do need a closer don't kid urself thinking there satisfied with hawkins 529708 He's arby eligible.
August 28, 200421 yr Borowski is going to be due for a raise soon, and no team wants a mediocre closer. Hawkins doesn't make chump change, plus the Cubs would basically be admitting that he was a bad investment. He'll be there next year. Armando would look bad in a Cubs uni anyways.
August 28, 200421 yr Tejera wouldn't replace Pavano...I could see Hutchinson replace him or a low salary replacement such as a Valdez or something...it's not like this team won't fill the holes....it will just be low-salary alternatives.
August 28, 200421 yr Tejera wouldn't replace Pavano...I could see Hutchinson replace him or a low salary replacement such as a Valdez or something...it's not like this team won't fill the holes....it will just be low-salary alternatives. 529724 Hutchinson is nothing special, and if Valdez replaces Pavano, who replaces Valdez? We have to face it, Pavano has been our best pitcher this year, there's no disputing that. Beckett, Burnett and Willis while they have potential, have pitched no better than #3 starters in a rotation. (Beckett's pitched more like a five) The point is taking Pavano out of this rotation would kill us next season. If Pavano was becoming a free agent after next year my attitude might be different because we have some very nice prospects coming up (Vargas, Olsen, Bazardo, Kensing, and Tankersley) who will probably be ready for the bigs in 2006. We have nobody for next year. Tejera won't cut it. Hutchinson won't cut it. Our 4th and 5th starter spots would be almost sure losses.

August 28, 200421 yr No he's not arby he signed a one yr contract last year I think it was 4.5mil 529814 that was to avoid having to go to arbitration with AJ last offseason. He's arbitration eligible once again this offseason. Also, it wasn't 4.5 million I think it was somewhere around 2.5-3 million.
August 28, 200421 yr Players are eligible for arbitration after 3 years of major league service and free agency after six years. Which makes me wonder about Mike Redmond. He has the service time, but is not listed on any sites as a free agent this winter. He did sign for an one-year deal, did he not? If so, that hurts us even more. After starting much of the 2002 season he earned a big raise, and could be due a modest raise after accepting a 20% cut in salary this past December.
