September 4, 200421 yr Columbus has always been known for fielding very good high school baseball teams. As of now, they have no player that has made it to the big leagues and is an All-Star. They could have had 2 if it werent for bad talent evaluation. Mike Lowell went to Columbus his freshman year hoping to make the baseball team. He didnt make the final cut and eventually transferred to Coral Gables High and eventually to the Big Leagues and an All-Star. Another player to tryout for the team, Alex Rodriguez, was also cut before making the team. Yes this is the same Alex Rodriguez who plays for the Yankees and is an All-Star. He was told by the head coach that he should try playing ping-pong instead of baseball. Man, were the coaches ever wrong. When Alex made it to the big leagues he sent the head coach a ping pong table by mail. Nice move by Alex =). Jim Hendry, Gm of the Cubs, worked for the Marlins FO under Dombrowski, graduated from Columbus. I went to Columbus for 2 years and heard these stories from teachers there.
September 4, 200421 yr Yea, I knew about Mikey and Alex. 542526[/snapback] Miri you got that beautiful black man as your sig, How does Maxx feel about that?! Ohh and I did say beautiful. I am secure with my sexuality! And as for Colmbus high they are STUPID!
September 4, 200421 yr As a Columbus grad, you are partially correct. Mike Lowell went to Columbus for his freshman and sophmore years. I graduated with his older brother in 1990. The former baseball coach Brother Herb said that Lowell was too small to play. A-Rod only went to Columbus for his freshman year and was in the same homeroom as my brother-in-law. Again, there was a clash of personalities between him and Brother Herb. Actually, that freshman class also included Brian Griese. By the way, it wasn't Jim Hendry that went to Columbus, but former Cub GM Ed Lynch was the Columbus alum you're thinking about.
September 4, 200421 yr And the top rated catcher of that school graduated last year and was drafted by the Yankees, but he deiced to go to play for UM. We'll see what happens with that kid (Alex Garabiean). But this kid has a bright future ahead of him.
September 4, 200421 yr I heard the story about Lowell before, didn't know what the school was though. Never heard the A-Rod one, that's good stuff.
September 4, 200421 yr Yea I have heard alot about Garabiean I guess those who told me about him werent lying. lol
