With each victory, the Atlanta Braves move closer to securing a 13th straight division title. They'll look to accelerate the process when they continue a three-games with the second-place Florida Marlins at Pro Player Stadium.

The Braves reduced their magic number for clinching the NL East to eight by beating the defending World Series champion Marlins 8-1 on Friday night. Chipper Jones powered Atlanta to victory with a three-run homer.

``I was proud to see us match their intensity,'' Jones said. ``We want to win this series, plain and simple.''

Florida outhit the Braves 13-11 but stranded 10 runners, grounded into three double plays and had a runner thrown out at the plate. The Marlins fell 8 1/2 games behind the Braves.

``These are big games,'' said Marcus Giles, who had three hits for Atlanta and scored twice. ``We just can't get too complacent. We have to continue to play good ball and roll on home.''

The Marlins also lost ground in the NL wild-card race. They trail San Francisco by 4 1/2 games for the top spot.

``We can't afford to lose too many,'' Florida manager Jack McKeon said.

The Marlins are 4-10 against the Braves this year, and 34-13 against the rest of the East.
