October 24, 200421 yr New York's obviously #1 IMO, just because of the history. Baseball originated on the streets of New York, and three of the four most stories franchises in baseball played most of their existence there. 599664[/snapback] Maybe in terms of history, but NY has some bad fans. It's not fair to make a generalization, because every team (even the Expos) have devoted die-hards. However, St. Louis fans are real classy, love their baseball, and appreciate and understand what's going on. Want proof? Watch a game from the NLCS, even the fans right on the field behind homeplate knew what was going on, no one was on their cells, they were hanging on just about every pitch...that's some serious fan support. Then look at NY or Boston, and you'll see the "faux-fan" that just bothers the hell out of me...
October 25, 200421 yr NY fans are not the best. Why didn't they go to Yankee games in the 80's/early 90's? STL far and away have the best fans in baseball. Not even close. And again, Miami needs time. You can't just cast it off after 11 years as a failure. It's tempting to do so yes in today's society of stupidity, but you have to realize it takes decades to build a loyal fan base.
October 25, 200421 yr One thing impressed me about Boston fans. I was at Fenway a couple of years ago for a meaningless game in September. The Sox were out of it and they were playing the Orioles. These were the Orioles before Miguel Tejada and Javy Lopez. I got to the game about an hour before game time and the streets were packed with Sox fans. It was like Opening Day for the Marlins. Not only was the game sold out, but everyone was in their seats for the first pitch until the last pitch. Those are fans... I don't care if a fan has their cell phone sitting behind home plate. Fact is, they are there. There are so many other cities that would have had a really small turnout for a meaningless game in September vs a losing team.

That doesnt mean they have the best fans...because they dont. They have the good fans (barely, the ones that actually congratulated Boston and gave them credit), and then the really bad fans (about 90% of them....who think they should win it every year and say Boston and the Marlins were lucky)... There's no in-between. Boston has die-hard fans and sold out EVERY regular season game. How anyone can say they are "bad" fans is beyond me. But....i gotta give it to the Cards. It should have been Cards, then Boston.
October 26, 200421 yr The Red Sox did not sell out when they were losing games. The best they've finished in a year they've had a losing record was 5th in the AL in 1987 (the year after a WS appearance). The Cardinals, Yankees, Mets or Cubs' losing teams don't draw well. No teams does, despite how many of these stupid articles are reprinted year after year. When does he break out the 'baseball games are too long' spiel? How about the 'there's no small-market teams in the World Series' article?
October 26, 200421 yr The Mariners also have a good fan base...even with their attrocious record this year,the game that I went to easily had over 35,000 people.Not only that but they are the kindest bunch even when you are rooting for the opposing team. :thumbup
