October 31, 200421 yr Plus doesnt it seem like medical science has improved in how effectivley people come off TJS? I mean Burnett came back almost immediatley and did pretty well. Smoltz's first season of TJS was a very good 59 IP with a low 3 ERA. 604623 The procedure is much safer than before. Pitchers have increased velocity after the surgery. More recent cases have pitchers regaining control much earlier thanks to coaching staffs recognizing how many pitchers on the roster are recovering from the surgery and developing new exercises.
October 31, 200421 yr AJ still struggled over 15 months after his surgery 604709 12. He had the surgery in May 2003. We all want Benitez to come back after what he did this year, but that would mean hurting the team somewhere else. We can get by with Mota at closer and Spooneybarger and a cheap FA pickup setting him up. People, get ready to lose some of these players. There's $37MM tied to just Pudge, Hampton, Conine, Gonzalez, Pierre, Castillo and Lowell. Add in Pavano, LoDuca, Mota, Beckett and Burnett with rock-bottom prices and we're already at $57MM with barely anything to spend on a RFer, bench, bullpen, 5th starter and raises for other players. We'll need to let someone else go along with Encarnacion and Benitez.

October 31, 200421 yr Remember that we went in the 2003 season with Looper as our closer, I am sure we will find someone. I rather have an 18 game winner and an all star catcher

October 31, 200421 yr keep mando and give me lowe he'd thrive with our defense behind him 604571 Hell no, He's not nearly as good as Pavano and he is going to command around the same... 604584 he's not nearly as good as pavano cuz he's a dominant ground ball pitcher and his defense is the worst in the MLB, and he pitches in fenway and to say he's getting as much as pavano is foolish 604722 "he's not nearly as good as pavano cuz he's a dominant ground ball pitcher and his defense is the worst in the MLB, and he pitches in fenway and to say he's getting as much as pavano is foolish" His ERA was crap last season, good defense or not the amount of earned runs he allowed last season was horrible. He was commanding a multi-year deal for 10 million a season entering this season. You don't think the Sox are going to try to keep the guy that clinched what I think was every game in the playoffs? They'll shell out 6 - 8 for him, and he isn't half the pitcher Carl is, look at Lowe's season last year it was horrible he's lucky his ERA wasn't any higher...his WHIP was outrageous

October 31, 200421 yr He can be successful if the Marlins sticks give him a 2 or 3 run 8th inning lead. 604300 Mota proved this season that he can blow any lead, nomatter how large he can find a way to blow it. No lead is safe with Mota on the mound and I have absolutely no confidence in him at all, watching him with the Marlins last season you would have had no idea people used to call him "THE BEST SETUP MAN IN BASEBALL" because he was garbage. I do think Jack didn't manage the pen correctly and forced Mota on numerous occasions to go 2 innings, but then again Mota had the reputation as being an ironman and able to go 2 innings night in and night out so there shouldn't have been a problem.
November 1, 200421 yr You just remember the games in September.. obviously because it's fresh in your mind. He pitched 100 INNINGS each of the last 2 years.. That number will reduced by about a third as a closer.
