how can someone be against parents knowing about child abortion is totally beyond me.

I have a very good friend who a few years ago I had to drive to get an abortion. She was raped and no longer lived with her parents. Her parents were divorced, her dad won custody of her. Just that fact alone should let you know there was something messed up with the situation. Her dad was abusive towards her so she moved out and lived with another friend. You think ontop of all of this, this girl should have had to called her estranged dad to let him know what happend to her and what she was going to do?

Further thoughts on Amendment 1:

If girls have to let her parents know and she doesn't want to, you will see more girls trying to do abortions on themselves. Are you okay with that? (aimed to anyone who supports amendment 1)

Kids have to get parental approval to play high school sports, but not have a major operation?

Its an issue or privacy.

And like I said before. Would you rather doctors performing these operations, or rather the girls performing crude operations on themselves? It is nearsighted not to realize that girls will try to take care of the problem themselves so they don't have to tell their parents.

And don't say that this legislation is going to make girls change their mind from having sex, unless you plan on sitting ever girl down from here on out and tell them "Oh, just so you know if you ever have sex and get pregnant and decide to get an abortion, you'll need to get your parents approval first. Or you'll just have to take care of the problem yourself." That would be a good speech in a classroom of 12 year old girls.

they have the amendments on kids' voting?

If girls are stupid enough to try and perform the operations on themselves, then damn, this country has gone to hell.

This legislation will not affect girls choices to have sex. It won't even come close. If the parents are pro-choice people then it definitely won't be a big deal.

This is ridiculous. Myself as a parent, would like to know about something like this. I can try to support my daughter, offer her different options, etc. In addition, do you trust a minor selecting a doctor and a qualified medical facility? Give me a break

they have the amendments on kids' voting?

606486[/snapback]

i voted for a family member. :plain

The thing about Amendment 1 is that it's very tricky. I can see both arguments.

For Amendment: Putting myself in a parents' shoes, of course I would like to know if my daughter was going to have an abortion to be there for her in a time when she'd need me the most. Not all parents are bad but....

Against Amendment: I know parents who say that if their daughter gets pregnant they will throw them out of the house. There are parents out there who are old fashioned and would totally make the girl feel alone and crappy. Then you will most likely see teenage girls leaving babies in a dumpster somewhere or giving themselves an abortion or going to some rinky dink abortion clinic and make things worse than they already are.

BTW, I voted against the amendment after really thinking it through.

President: George W. Bush

Senator: Mel Martinez

Mayor: Carlos Alvarez

I see both sides of the arguement. But if the parents are that involved in their daughter's life, the daughter would let them know if they don't get pregnant. In my mind, I figure if the daughter doesn't let the parents know, there is something not kosher there, and there is probably a valid reason for the parents not knowing. This is a country of freedom, you should not be forced to forfeit your privacy for anything.

Also, there is a probably a better way to go about this then amending our constitution over this. Do we want in our state constitution an amendment that forces anyone to forfeit their privacy?

We are talking about minors here. Most minors don't have the capacity to make a sound decision on this type of situations. Minors don't have the right of privacy on most things anyway.

I think this makes more good than bad at the end. I can also see both side of the argument, but I voted as a parent.

I am not saying you are against abortion overall but let me use your post as some evidence. I do not know if you are pro choice or pro life.

But for those people pro-life should be very much for this amendment. Why? Well those that are pro-life fight that embryos should have the same righst as everyone else. Well if this amendment passes, minors will not have the rights of privacy of everyone else, arming the pro-choice side with legal ammunition to show that embryos can not have all the rights of people if minors, living people, don't.

I'm 100% positive the proposed amendment neither says nor implies anything about the legal status of embryos or fetuses. imo, that would be a legitimate reason to oppose other abortion-related laws, but not this one.

I'm unabashedly pro-choice, but that doesn't mean I'd want some 14-year-old to make such a decision without consulting her parents.

A poll taken about a month ago showed equal support for this amendment from both men and women. Also, it found more democrats supported the proposal than opposed it.

I'm 100% positive the proposed amendment neither says nor implies anything about the legal status of embryos or fetuses.

Here is my logic. If we say our minors are not given all the liberties we get, then they are not equal citizens. Then how can pro-life people argue embryos should have all the rights adult americans have if we don't even give the same rights to minors?

If a girl doesn't tell her parents, don't you think there might be a real reason for her not to tell her parents? I don't think daughters' goal in life is to keep parents out of their lives, maybe I am idealistic. I just think if a girl doesn't tell her parents on her own there must be a reason.

Minors don't have the right to vote, can't be drafted, and can't buy certain things until a certain age anyways, so I don't think that the "equal citizens" thing can be applied, although I know what you are saying.

Being able to buy beer is not a liberty, privacy is. I am just saying for pro-life people, you let this pass you are just giving another bullet for pro-choice people to use in court.
