CBC SPORTS ONLINE - The Chicago man accused of trying to blackmail New York Yankees right-fielder Gary Sheffield and his wife was ordered held in jail on Thursday. Sheffield, runner-up to Vladimir Guerrero for most valuable player honours in the American League, confirmed Tuesday that the accused blackmailer claimed to own sexual tapes of his wife, who "had a long-term relationship with a well-known professional singer over 10 years ago." Derrick Mosley, 38, was charged with scheming to defraud for allegedly attempting to extort money from an athlete, presumably Sheffield. Mosley claimed that he wished only to provide moral counselling to Sheffield's wife, gospel recording artist DeLeon Richards. But Judge Morton Denlow ruled Thursday that "There is probable cause to believe that this whole issue of counselling and that you were intending to counsel that person was a fraud." Ordered Denlow: "The defendant will be held in custody." According to an FBI affidavit, Mosley claimed two videotapes of the athlete's wife, the singer and an unidentified woman were delivered anonymously to his Chicago office, and that "he was very upset and concerned about the tapes. Mosley further stated that he wished to speak to Individual A about reform and her moral standing." Mosley allegedly contacted Sheffield's business agent, Rufus Williams, on Nov. 3 and, a week later, demanded money to counsel the athlete's wife. Williams, who was already keeping the FBI abreast of the situation and secretly taping conversations with Mosley, offered him $1,000 US. "I think we just gotta go a little higher," replied Mosley, whose conversation with Williams was secretly taped and played at Thursday's hearing by federal prosecutors. "I think if you wanted to really be fair, we're looking at more like perhaps $20,000." Mosley then provided Williams with a bank account number and instructions to wire the cash, but was arrested four days later. Sheffield enjoyed a stellar season for the Yankees, hitting .290 with 36 home runs, 121 runs batted in and 117 runs scored in 154 games, earning his eight all-star selection and fourth Silver Slugger Award. The 35-year-old reportedly earned $13 million US this past season, his first with New York and 17th in the major leagues.
