Washington club acquires Guillen from Angels

The Expos have made their third significant acquisition of the week, acquiring outfielder Jose Guillen from the Angels for outfielder Juan Rivera and shortstop Maicer Izturis, The Sporting News has learned.

 

Tuesday, the Expos signed free-agent shortstop Cristian Guzman to a four-year, $16.8 million contract and third baseman Vinny Castilla to a two-year, $6.2 million deal. The signing of Guzman made Izturis, who is the younger brother of the Dodgers' Cesar Izturis, expendable.

Guillen, who was suspended by the Angels in late September for the remainder of the season, will earn $3.5 million next season.

 

He also had been a target of the Mets.

Good move for them,

3.5 mil for a guy who can hit over .300 with 35 bombs.. not too shabby.

Excellent move by the Expositions, mostly because their acquisition of Castilla wasn't that great considering his mediocrity outside of Coors.

not a bad trade all around ... Angels get two pretty good guys who can produce if given a chance (at least thats what I expected out of Rivera when going to the spos)

This was a good trade for both teams because Guillen had to go. Oh well...if Pavs and Benitez don't sign then we will have a little extra money to spend. I just don't understand why we don't make a play for Delgado. He is a beast and a nice guy in the clubhouse (unlike Guillen). I know Carlos Delgado is expensive but he is an automatic 100 RBIs and he would like to play in Miami!!! DO it Beinfest!

Burnitz is another Vinny Castilla, he showed it when he played in Mew York. Burnitz can only hit in Coors. And also i dont understand how can Conine and Delgado can play 1B in the same game, on the same team :whistle

I meant Conine in left obviously. I don't know who else is out there. I know Richard Hidalgo for the latino community but he doesn't impress me and he isn't a lefty. Cliff Floyd might be the guy to get if he comes cheap. He is always injury prone though and has thought about retiring.

Termel Sledge and Endy Chavez who sucks. Backup infielders Brendan Harris and Jamey Carroll are better.

Bowden traded for Encarnacion and sent him away within 4 months. I don't think any GM wants Enc. Maybe the Mets or Orioles if we take one of their bad contracts.

Really rferry? I don't think Sledge is that bad and I've always been a fan of Chavez.. I like his game. Real good OF with a gun and a good slap hitter. I think Chavez will be a good Major League player, IMO.

 

Also, Wilkerson will be their 1B right?

Nah, Sledge isn't that bad at all, but was considered more of a stop-gap AAAA player last year. Chavez doesn't hit well enough to start. Maybe a defensive replacement and pinch-runner. Wilkerson is going back to the outfield where he can play any of the three positions. The lineup will probably be:

oh wow, I totally forgot about Nick Johnson.

 

I think Chavez is a pretty good hitter.. I think he hit around .280 last year. Has great speed, plays great defense and has a rocket for an arm. I think he would be a better lead-off hitter than Guzman, imo. He is a little Juan Pierre-esque that way he hits. I would think they start Chavez in CF and put Wilkerson in LF.

Well, if I had my way Vidro or Wilkerson would be leading off.

With Johnson coming back, Vidro coming off one of his worst seasons, addition of Castilla and Guillen....their offense is going to be very solid. Their pitching should give them a chance to compete. Will be a wild race next season with the Mets laying claim to last place.

I was thinking of cheap of some good OF who should be cheap and i the name Raul Mondesi came to mind. I know he's a headache but so is Guillen and he could be worth it.

did i say he was better than Guillen? Im just saying hes a cheap option that the marlins could look at. He has a rocket arm and he has shown in the past that he can hit.
