November 28, 200421 yr Small budget is reality. Competitiveness is a strong possibility. FO is up to the task. I've said before, keep the starting 8 position players and put every extra penny into pitching. IMO every position starter is poised for a good year, including Encarnacion. And the bench with Easley, Mordy, Harris, Willingham, Aguila is the best we've ever had. Hopefully, Treanor will cover for the loss of Redmond vs the questionable durability of LoDuca. I don't want an aging over-valued big stick. And I'm pleased the FO is taking its time. Sometimes wish Posters herein would be a little more patient and a little less subject to Fantasy Baseball mentality.
November 28, 200421 yr Generally I agree especially regarding the FO being up to the task. While it would fun (as a fan and not the guys controlling the purse strings or evaluating the talent) to be in the position some other teams are enjoying this off-season, in the end I feel confident we'll field a very competitive team. It's a mistake (from my perspective) to be focusing on the Delgados or Sosas of the world when there are any number of lesser known free agents (and trade possibilities) that are possible acquisitions any of whom could help this team.
November 28, 200421 yr The best teams have always been mixes of solid players, late 90's yankess never had a star, the Dbacks, Angels, Marlins. The only team to really go deep into the playoffs with a dominating player is The Giants in 2002, other wise its obvious good pitching and a mix of solid guys and some luck win you games.

November 28, 200421 yr ya garrett anderson is only the most unknown star in the game. and that glaus kid has a bit of power. not to mention one of the best closers in the history of hte game in percival..all on that angel team.

He then followed up the comment with a few asine examples that were not right, it was corrected by the so called moderators.
November 28, 200421 yr To a point I agree. We don't need a Sosa or Delgado, but a Kevin Millar or David Dellucci would be nice. Because of the lack of interest in Encarnacion, and losses we have on the pitching-end, I think the front office is left with no other choice than to invest whatever money is available into pitching. We'll see if that was a good strategy in 10 months.

Herein, our "Moderators" have been enabled (by Admin?) unbridled power to debate and de-rail and create a chaotic chat room out of the best baseball forum (too often recently ending in personal insults.) And "asine" is spelled "asinine." And you don't use my first name on this forum. You are welcome to e-mail me anytime if you want to address me personally.
November 28, 200421 yr Of course you realize that all moderators were Users are at one point. The fact that you see Moderators as people who are not allowed to speak is beyond me. Some where in your head you've recieved the impression that a moderator is not allowed to participate in a debate. This is not a job this was something that was volunteered by USERS. Thus they are still allowed to participate in debate when anything gets out of hand anywhere, they step in. My advise is get this impression out of your head that Moderators are only to be seen and not heard because my friend, You are not in charge of these forums. Thus whatever Admin felt fit is appropriate by the moderators.

November 28, 200421 yr I'm fine with the bats, with the possible exception of Encarnacion. Pitching & bullpen are my concerns right now. If the front office can work some magic and get a Delgado here though, I"m open to it. I'd prefer it be a short-term deal though. Next year we'll have a lot of money freed up so there will be a lot of options. Oh wait, I'm not allowed to have opinions on a thread, oops. :lol
November 28, 200421 yr Author It's almost also hard for me to believe that Encarnacion will finally produce. But, I want to believe that. And I'm willing to wait 'til Spring Training. Meantime, I don't want to buy an OF. Want the money to go for pitching.
November 28, 200421 yr If you could swap Enc and a mid-level prospect for a cheaper alternative and save maybe 1.5, 2 million that could be spent on pitching, would you take it?

First we need to make sure that we have someone that could get their job done for every position, and then we spend our money on pitching. As we've seen from the past WS champions, pitching always win. We NEED to have good pitching. So we only spend minimal money on hitting, just so we could have SOME hitting, and then we just go after pitching. Its been said many times, "Pitching wins you ballgames."
November 28, 200421 yr If you could swap Enc and a mid-level prospect for a cheaper alternative and save maybe 1.5, 2 million that could be spent on pitching, would you take it? 622687 I would take it. I want to get rid of Juan so we can get someone like Burnitz. Even though he is overrated, and even though he had an advantage last year of being in coors, he is still a great hitter, and we could get him cheap. And it wouldn't hurt if we got him anyways, so it's worth a try. Last year: 37 HR, 110 RBIs, .915 OPS :thumbup

But (I'm sorry!), I think Encarnacion will produce. But... I also think your "cheaper alternative" is already in our farm system (not to mention Aguila, Willingham, Reid, etc. and others who may sparkle in Jupiter.) Thanks HotCorner for your direct response. It's a pleasure disagreeing with you!
November 28, 200421 yr IMO every position starter is poised for a good year, including Encarnacion. Why? I don't think you could pick 8 guys in all of baseball before the season and have them all have good years. Enc will almost certainly be better than last year but the most I'm hoping for from him is mediocrity - I've given up on him ever having a breakout season. And the bench with Easley, Mordy, Harris, Willingham, Aguila is the best we've ever had.? Hopefully, Treanor will cover for the loss of Redmond vs the questionable durability of LoDuca. I don't agree. I hate this bench but when you have limited financial resources, you have to cut corners somewhere. This bench has very very little power. Easley can't pinch hit. Harris has no power. Mordy may not be in the majors anymore if not for us. Willingham is going to be a 26-year old rookie that won't be getting better by sitting on the bench. Treanor was a nice story but he was pretty terrible offensively last year - much worse than Redmond and that's tough to do. Aguila won me over though. I like him and he has some pop. I don't want an aging over-valued big stick. Agreed. And I'm pleased the FO is taking its time. Sometimes wish Posters herein would be a little more patient and a little less subject to Fantasy Baseball mentality. All Front Offices are taking their time. Wait until December 7th. Once teams know if they'll have to give up a draft pick, then players will start signing. Some free agents will come off the market if they accept arbitration with their existing team. We're bottom feeders. We wait for somebody to slip in the market, that we can get on the cheap, and then we move in. If somebody like Magglio Ordonez can't get a deal, we'll be there trying to sign him to a 1-year contract to prove himself again. I like this approach. It's a creative way to deal with our low revenue and it's not much risk. 622581
November 28, 200421 yr Encarnacion is awful. Lets face the facts. The guy has all the potential in the world and never does anything with it why should this year be an different.... ship his ass to Japan

Its been said many times, "Pitching wins you ballgames." 622692 Defense also wins ballgames and we have the defense to help mediocre pitchers turn in solid years. A good offense also wins ballgames. However this offense is far from good and needs a serious jolt. Unless you can move Encarnacion or someone else's contract it's not worth it considering the replacements need on the pitching end. If it wasn't for the recent lack of loyalty shown by former and current Marlins, it might be smart to trade Pierre, who is in the last year of his contract and in high demand, and try Encarnacion in center. That way you can free up salary while getting quality players back and putting Enc in a position to possibly help the team. We'd lose nothing offensively from moving Luiy back to the leadoff spot and LoDuca lacks the pop and patience to be a true #3. It's a risky move, but if done right we can acquire just the right players to help this year and next year.
November 29, 200421 yr I've had the same idea before.... don't know if Enc's ever played any center but you'd think he would be perfectly suited for it. Suddenly you'd go from a statistically weak offensive corner outfielder to a strong offensive center fielder. I'd hate to lose JP though.... not to mention you'd have half the members here out for Beinfest's head.
November 29, 200421 yr Enc's last full year at CF was 2000. By the numbers he had good range and decent glove. Overall he's played 305 games in center, 467 in right, 135 in left. I don't think we'd lose much defensively. Pierre's no gold glover, just a pure speed guy.
November 29, 200421 yr Of course. And the package you'd get for Pierre. Maybe a slugger and a solid young SP so you wouldn't have to overpay free agents to fill in between Penny/Beckett/Burnett era and the Jupiter Five.
