December 1, 200421 yr SP Beckett SP Burnett SP Lieter - about to sign? SP Willis SP Jaret Wright, Wilson Alvarez or Ismail Valdez NOTES: If we lose Pavano as expected Odalis Perez would be a great addition, but doubtful. I think Milton and Jaret Wright would fit PPP very well. RP Mota RP Hermanson RP Spooneybarger RP Steve Kline RP Weathers or Gabe White or Russ Springer or Nate Bump or Chad Fox or Van Poppel RP Weathers or Gabe White or Russ Springer or Nate Bump or Chad Fox or Van Poppel NOTES: So we don't expect to have the sure-thing closer. How about a bullpen with depth? Hermanson has talent....just maybe not as a closer...but who knows. Steve Kline is a must....he would be money well spent and with the loss of Pavs and Benitez we have a few extra bucks. White and Van Poppell are decent guys to have in the pen when they are not 1-2-3...Springer I like because with flame throwers in the pen and on the starting staff he is a different look. Also a decent spot starter at the # 5 slot when ya then throw Becketts heat after the knuckle-baller. 1B Conine 1B/OF John Mabry or Hollandsworth 2B Castillo 2B/3B Easley SS Gonzalez 2B/SS/3B Mordy 3B Lowell LF Cabrera CF Pierre RF Encarnacion OF Glanville or Ledee CA LoDuca CA Willingham or Treanor PH Lenny Harris NOTES: Mabry and Hollandsworth...a blast from the past. Good LH bats to pinch hit and also play some 1B with Conine getting rest. They can also play some OF. Glanville or Ledee allow Pierre to get some rest...at some time. Doable? Yes. Is this a winning team? It is competitive and ya know what...if Beckett and AJ do what they can we are in it. If they don't I dont care who we add...your # 1 and # 2's have to pull in 30+ wins between them.
December 1, 200421 yr Same offense as last year. Didn't work then, definately won't work now with Conine, Lo Duca and Lowell a year older and the pitching weaker.
December 1, 200421 yr - Good idea to get better results out of 1B and RF by platooning Conine and Encarnacion with a Willingham or Hollandsworth. - Where's Aguila? - Do we need Hermanson, Kline and Weathers/etc.? One or two would suffice. We don't need overpaid veteran middle relievers. Ask the Phillies and White Sox how that worked out for them. - With Lenny wasting a roster spot, 'super-sub' Easley here and Josh Wilson in AAA can we afford to give a spot to Mordy? He's one of my favorite players but it seems like we need another Mabry/Colbrunn/Hollandsworth-type.
December 1, 200421 yr Author Remember my Title...'realistic' 25 man roster. I'd love to say Beltran moves into CF and Delgado slides into 1B. We can re-sign Pavano and then add a starter....but that is not realistic. Other than a new RF'er or 1B, what offense do you see us adding? If anything, we could see Castillo moves to Oakland in a deal for Hudson and then sign a Todd Walker type for 2B is Easley is not our guy. Realistically, I say let's build up a strong pen. A strong pen + what better be consistent starters keeps us in games. We need Pierre and Castillo to be table setters of 2003 and I believe LoDuca will have a productive season because he truly is a bridge between the speed guys at the top and the power from Lowell and Cabrera. LoDuca does not need to drive in 100 runs. He needs to keep rallies going ahead of Lowell and Cabrera. Conine, Juan E. and Gonzalez.....260 40HR and 180 RBI combined would be acceptable to me. In my opinion, the keys this season are Beckett, AJ and Lowell. Beckett has to bust out aqs we hoped he would last season. AJ must replace Pavano. Lowell must put a FULL season together. Get this and team it up with a strong pen and I think we are a very competitive team.
December 1, 200421 yr Author - Do we need Hermanson, Kline and Weathers/etc.? One or two would suffice. We don't need overpaid veteran middle relievers. Ask the Phillies and White Sox how that worked out for them. 624019[/snapback] Mota - has never been a successful closer Spooney - coming off TJ surgery Fox - who knows how his arm will be Bump - want to ride this roller coaster again? Neu, Howard, Perisho, Manzy..... This is who you want? I don't. Hermanson is a flame thrower. Kline is a tough guy that gets big outs. Springer, Weathers are veterans that can throw more than an inning or so.
December 1, 200421 yr Hermanson wants to start this year. He was thrown into the closer role for SF as an emergency. The Giants didn't retain him because he wants to start.
December 1, 200421 yr I just don't think it's necessary to be clogging our options. More than likely one of these established relievers is going to stink. It happens. A lot. Just look around the league. And many of these guys are prone to off-nights so it might not be the best strategy to build a team to win 3-2 ballgames when you can build a team that can win any type of ballgames and do it within payroll.
December 1, 200421 yr - Do we need Hermanson, Kline and Weathers/etc.? One or two would suffice. We don't need overpaid veteran middle relievers. Ask the Phillies and White Sox how that worked out for them. Did you see our bullpen this year? I'd say we need at least 2 out of the group of Kline, Cormier, Hammond, Mecir, Osuna, and Shuey. That would turn a weakness into a strength on this team. Considering how much trouble this team is going to have scoring runs if they insist on keeping LoDuca and cutting payroll (or keeping payroll steady), they'll need all the pitching help they can get.
December 1, 200421 yr I know this is supposed to be realistic, but this proposed roster sucks. I like what you're proposing with the pitching (except for Eric Milton - totally overrated, and Dustin Hermanson - sucks), but the offense is awful. Hollandsworth/Mabry, Glanville/Ledee, Mordecai, and Willingham/Treanor? Yuck! No upgrades to the offense and no bench whatsoever.
December 1, 200421 yr Author I wish I could say we will add Randy Johnson, Tom Gordon, Carlos Beltran and Darlos Delgado. I wish I could say Polanco, Dellucci and Randy Winn will be added for the bench. But again I state....I said 'realistic' roster. Last year we turned Lee into Choi Pudge into Redmond and Castro Redman into Darren Oliver Hollandsworth into Harris Urbina/Looper into Benitez If you think we are going to lose out on Pavano and Benitez and acquire BIGGER names, no way.
December 2, 200421 yr I wish I could say we will add Randy Johnson, Tom Gordon, Carlos Beltran and Darlos Delgado. I wish I could say Polanco, Dellucci and Randy Winn will be added for the bench. When the most Beltran is expecting to make is about $13-$15 mil per season, it's understandable for everyone here who thinks mathematically to take issue with what Loria may be doing; meaning he made those offers knowing that they'd never be accpeted so he wouldn't have to pay, so that money was never truly "on the table." If that's the case, then we as fans have the right to be upset, but I hope the offers were made with every intention of them being accepted. If that's true, then I don't think it's unrealistic to say that we can call ourselves a legit suitor for the services of a Magglio Ordonez (who will have to sign a low base salary deal) or Moises Alou (who will only get a 2 year deal) or even Matt Morris or Eric Milton.
December 2, 200421 yr i think that team can compete....but a .500 year from this team might be a realistic goal

Let's wait until the end of the offseason before we start calling Loria a liar and cheat. Or we could wait until after yet another 80+-win season in October.
December 8, 200421 yr Author Time to re-visit as we put together a realistic 25 man roster: SP Beckett SP Burnett SP Lieter SP Willis SP Wilson Alvarez or Ismail Valdez NOTES: If Pavano signs a multi-year deal, Beckett is gone. There is no way we will be gifted with a 5-man staff Pavano, Beckett, AJ, Lieter and Willis. RP Mota RP Alfonseca RP Spooneybarger RP Scott Williamson or Van Poppel RP Steve Kline or Gabe White RP Nate Bump or Russ Springer NOTES: Someone argued my point of having depth in the bullpen. He said don't waste money on overpriced MR's. Mota, Affonseca and Spooneybarger will be in the pen. The addition of Alfonseca, along with Spooneybarger means we are looking for long-relief/7th inning guys. Nate Bump may land a spot as long reliever. Steve Kline is a longshot, but would be a tremendous addition. If not him, let's go after Gabe White. Scott Williamson was not offered arbitration so he will land elsewhere. Bienfest liked him in the past...he or Van Poppel would be fine with me. 1B Conine 1B/OF John Mabry or Hollandsworth 2B Castillo 2B/3B Easley SS Gonzalez 2B/SS/3B Dillon or Geoff Blum 3B Lowell LF Cabrera CF Pierre RF Encarnacion OF Dellucci or Glanville CA LoDuca CA Willingham or Treanor PH Lenny Harris NOTES: Mordy off my list so Dillon is up with the big club unless we sign Blum.
December 8, 200421 yr Russ springer isnt a knuckleballer i think your confusing him with dennis springer
December 8, 200421 yr The only place Scott Williamson will land is in a sports rehab clinic. He's out for at least half the season after surgery.
