July 7, 200322 yr Hola Fishies, I don't know if this topic has been covered lately, but with the recent signs that management might begin to commit to a winning product, it has raised the question of a new stadium in downtown Miami (which really is the sine qua non for a perennial Marlins contender which draws respectable-sized crowds). Any news here? Also in re: potential trades. Loria's decision to keep Lowell, even if just for the remainder of this season, is great. It makes the possible loss of guys like Castillo, Lee or Penny easier to take; and if that Lee-for-Conine deal happens...well, all I'm saying is the crowds had better start showing up again. I still think the whole situation with Loria, Henry (traitor) and MLB is fishy (no pun intended); but naturally I'll forgive all if the Marlins make a real push for the playoffs. I live in Portland now, and I'd love to get the Expos here (but I don't think it'll happen). -Nerd
July 7, 200322 yr Loria told Gammons on the record that they are working on getting the ballpark and they are keeping it under the radar to let the area cool off. When it is a done deal, we will know.
July 7, 200322 yr Author I agree about the location. There are over a million Cubans in Miami, but there are also millions of baseball fans in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Something in downtown Ft. Laud. would be perfect. I even remember a proposal a few years ago for something in southern Palm Beach Co. But it's got to be in an urban center or the same problems will exist as do at Joe Robbie. A stadium in the 'burbs is fine for football, but baseball needs to be downtown.

Lauderdale.
July 7, 200322 yr Broward County would have to put up alot of money, like they did with the Panthers, but it is more likely that Dade will build it before Broward. I would love to see it in Broward! Downtown Ft. Lauderdale is really nice and clean compared to Downtown Miami. Las Olas is nice and so is the Museum/Performing Arts complex. There are alot of parking lots, and Tri-Rail has several stations in the area and BCT runs alot of buses. It is centrific to the area, and it is generally safe.
July 7, 200322 yr Las Olas is nice and so is the Museum/Performing Arts complex. It's around there. It was an official proposed site. You can do some digging and find it somewhere.
July 7, 200322 yr Here is a Google Web Cache of the Ft. Lauderdale Site. http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:lyqq2...&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 The Ballpark site was taken down, so this is what's left.
July 7, 200322 yr Downtown Ft. Lauderdale has access to I-95. It is really nice, why do they say it's highway access isn't good? You can use I-95 to get to I-75, I-595, the Turnpike, Palmetto, and other roads.
July 7, 200322 yr Here is an archive link with pictures, pictures will take a while to load. It will show the little red x's, but it will load photos eventually. http://web.archive.org/web/20020605171533/...lauderdale.html
July 7, 200322 yr City of Ft. Lauderdale always likes revenue... PLUS, I PROMISE you extream amounts of people in Broward and PB counties would go to SOOO many more games...
July 7, 200322 yr oh please, the stadium right now is in the edge of broward and dade and i don't see many people coming down from broward. the truth is the location of the stadium right now is equally as comfortable for people in broward as for people in dade and neither is supporting, so the whole argument that the stadium is in dade and the people in dade are not supporting is flawed.
July 7, 200322 yr Broward is a big possibility. The City of Ft. Lauderdale and the County can put a ballpark sales tax on rental cars and hotels like the City of Philadelphia did to pay for the Ballpark. They can use eminent domain to buy the land, highways are good and plenty, plenty of parking garage's by the museum and performing arts center.
July 7, 200322 yr Put it in Tropical Park! :thumbup lol that would be a great area. i work right next to it so i wouldn't have to pay for parking
July 7, 200322 yr Right now, the team wants the cities to show them the money and the question is who will?
July 7, 200322 yr We have explored all possible options, and are still waiting upon the results of our "tests". BUT, we do feel that our best options are downtown Ft. Lauderdale or Bicentenial Park.
July 7, 200322 yr that would be a great area. i work right next to it so i wouldn't have to pay for parking I live like 5 minutes away from Tropical Park. If they put some lights in that place (it is super dark at night) I would walk to the games every night. It's a big park, there is some unused space.

I agree, these two areas would allow you to get redevelopment tax breaks and allow you to get tax money for the ballpark.

It's a big park, there is some unused space. the only regret i would have against building the stadium there is that they would probably tear down the boxing gym. i've trained there and love it. also champs fredie pendleton and uriah grant trained out of that gym.
