No thanks on Alfonseca...Too many problems in the past....He sure as hell better not be the closer because i can't handle that again. I don't care what he did in Atlanta. I don't like either move.

These are good moves. Leiter is a great solid veteran that can still pitch.. and he'll provide leadership..

I, too am very troubled by not offering PAvano arbitration. I cant imagine the Marlins would let him go for nothing.

 

I am lost here, though. Could it be that the Marlins are delaying signing Leiter and AA because they want to offer Pavs arbitration first (to get that compensatory draft pick)? That way, if a deal is reached, they wont have the added deals of Leiter and AA on the books too.

 

Then again, maybe this is why they wont offer Pavs arbitration. They feel the pressure of having to go and sign AA and Leiter sooner rather than later and dont want to take a chance on Pavs at this point. Most likely, they would end up with the compensatory draft pick for Pavs - who will leave as a FA - and loose out on either, or both, Leiter and AA.

 

All that aside, I think AA is a good signing. He is a quality arm that seems to have it under control these days. I think $1.35M is a bargain for what he could bring. I dont think he will be our closer though - if the Marlins are going to have a successful bullpen, you want Mota to win that job and own it. AA would be a great set up guy alongside a healthy Spoon in the pen.

 

Yes, you can never have enough quality arms in the pen. And with the impending arrival of Leiter, we may need more of them.

As a small market team, we have to take risks on players that could possibly be great or possibly be marginal. It just goes with the territory. That's the case with Alfonseca, Wright, and Milton. I wouldn't consider Leiter much of a risk... you usually know what you get with Al.

Some people are forgetting about Spooney. While Mota, Alfonseca and Spooney are somewhat risky guys to count on leading your bullpen, they also have the ability to be fantastic... That's the chance you take.

Alfonseca, meanwhile, has received a multiyear offer from the Marlins that calls for a substantial raise from the $1.35 million he earned last season.
